View Full Version : SitcomsOnline 2013-14 Upfront Preview Week
Pavan 05-06-2013, 12:15 AM Stay tuned all this week (May 6-10) at around 12 noon ET on the blog for our predictions of the fall schedules!
NBC: Mondays at noon
Fox: Tuesday at noon
ABC: Wednesday at noon
CBS: Thursday at noon
The CW: Friday at noon
Please let us know your thoughts on our prediction and feel free to post your schedules AFTER we release ours!
Actual upfront is next week (May 13-16), so please join us the next two weeks as this is the busiest time of the year for TV people!
icecream 05-06-2013, 01:58 PM I think Community will come back so it has more episodes for syndication. In the fall Go On would have been a lock to return but since it nosedived doesn't have much value. MJF would be better off airing Tuesdays at 9:00, if it's put on Thursday CBS will move The Big Bang Theory against it. Parenthood should air Thursdays at 9:00 with Grimm at 10:00.
EmoJoe 05-06-2013, 02:30 PM The race between NBC's bubble comedies is one of the more interesting ones of Upfronts week this year...I think Community, Go On, and Whitney are the most likely to return, and I can see all of them returning, two of them returning or just one. I think at least one will, though. As a Community fan I'm obviously hoping Community gets renewed but I'm trying to prepare for the worst. I do think Community is legimiately a smarter renewal than Go On though but I doubt NBC will admit failure with that one.
gilligan fanatic 05-06-2013, 03:43 PM Seems like we have had a lot of early renewals this year, more so than normal
cherryade 05-06-2013, 05:24 PM Community is stronger than both Go On and Whitney (slightly better spring ratings in a far tougher timeslot), its ratings are more stable as a veteran, and it's almost certainly cheaper for NBC due to its proximity to syndication. It'll be a surprise if it's cancelled. If it is cancelled, it will be down to network executives deliberately going out of their way to cull a show they hate rather than down to its ratings.
NBC needs to find more broad appealing comedies
NBC needs to find more successful shows, but I remain unconvinced that this involves chasing such a nebulous and vague concept like "broad appeal".
I think the real problem is that NBC executives are cynically trying to dumb everything down to make their shows "broad" and have "heart". People tune in and soon start figuring out that the shows are generic, dumb and poorly-constructed and slowly-but-surely start tuning out. Even worse, their comedies aren't funny or fun.
Instead, NBC needs to stop playing it safe and start swinging for the fences.
I also think they have been way to keen to abandon their existing viewerbase. Yes, they need to get more viewers, but why not try creating a show that might actually appeal to people who already like and watch The Office, Parks and Recreation, Community and 30 Rock? Given that The Office and Parks are still NBC's top 2 comedies and the network is chasing the success of Modern Family, then why not order some mockumentary-style shows? There's no reason why NBC can't do it at the same time as their horrendous unappealing "broad" shlock that they insist on pumping out year-after-year.
tbswatcher 05-06-2013, 07:28 PM Does anyone know of other sites where I can see network upfront predictions?

The end of May will mean the beginning of the Canadian TV upfronts. I'll keep you posted on those when they happen.

Yeah, NBC shouted from the rooftops how broad and accessible their new shows were this year...and every single one of them failed.
They need good comedies, period. The Office was a big hit for them and it wasn't broad and pandering. 30 Rock and Parks & Rec were never big hits but they sure as hell did a lot better than any of NBC's recent sitcoms. Just make good shows again, because now they're alienating whatever audience they have left while failing to gain a new one.
Mr. Television 05-06-2013, 11:42 PM I hope MJF's new show is good. I wish he would have picked another network to go to.
1970sTVFan 05-07-2013, 12:10 PM Can't wait. Most of CBS shows will be renewed.
icecream 05-07-2013, 01:09 PM I didn't realize Alexis Bledel was in a FOX pilot. I definitely wouldn't mind that being paired with Raising Hope.
Cyrax 05-07-2013, 03:32 PM Really, really hoping that The Neighbors gets renewed!

icecream 05-08-2013, 12:26 PM Malibu Country is pretty well done, I'll take it any day over the overhyped Nashville... And it's better than the comedies that have aired after The Middle the last few years.
tlc38tlc38 05-08-2013, 01:35 PM Really, really hoping that The Neighbors gets renewed!
You and me both! I love the dry humor. Jami Gertz is a genius at delivering her lines and the rest of the cast really work well together. I'm still hoping for "Still Standing" season sets but I doubt they'll ever be released.
I'm also hoping for a third season of "Whitney". I would LOVE for "Don't Trust the B----" to come back but it's highly unlikely. "Red Widow", "Malibu County", and "Body of Proof" are favorites of mine and I'm hoping they return.

icecream 05-09-2013, 05:18 PM I would love to see Tony Shalhoub in another comedy. I just hope CBS doesn't make it crude like the rest of their sitcoms...
mets82 05-09-2013, 08:17 PM Have the upfronts started yet? I say that, because I saw some of NBC shows that have been cancelled. They were announced already.
icecream 05-09-2013, 08:47 PM Have the upfronts started yet? I say that, because I saw some of NBC shows that have been cancelled. They were announced already. No, upfronts don't start til Monday. But in the days before networks make a lot of renewal or cancellation decisions.
James28 05-10-2013, 12:20 AM Because the FOX Network has picked up nine live-action shows to series, are they gonna drop the X-Factor/American Idol Results Shows? And the results shows of ABC's Dancing With the Stars as well? Results shows are a waste of airtime.
Mr. Television 05-10-2013, 01:32 AM No, upfronts don't start til Monday. But in the days before networks make a lot of renewal or cancellation decisions.
I remember in the old days. I would wait to get the morning USA TODAY to read the new schedules and see what shows were picked up. It sure is different today. You pretty much know what is going to happen before the announcements are even made. Maybe one or two things are different but it's quite a difference from the 80's when I used to do that. lol
EmoJoe 05-10-2013, 02:43 AM Because the FOX Network has picked up nine live-action shows to series, are they gonna drop the X-Factor/American Idol Results Shows? And the results shows of ABC's Dancing With the Stars as well? Results shows are a waste of airtime.
In the early days of Idol, FOX only aired it for an hour and a half a week - an hour for the performance shows and a half-hour for the results. So they could always go back to that. There's no way they're going to keep it at 2 hour performance shows/1 hour result shows, that's for sure.

Me too.
icecream 05-10-2013, 12:06 PM Mark Pedowitz said the CW will have sitcoms again starting in the 2014-2015 season.
icecream 05-10-2013, 06:09 PM CBS picks up 6 shows.

irehtman 05-12-2013, 03:01 PM Wait a minute, they are putting Glee back on Tuesday nights and moving The Mindy Project to Friday Nights? Glee is better off on Thursday Nights and The Mindy Project stays puts on Tuesday Nights!
Both ABC and NBC cancelled to many shows and NBC cancelled all the comedies so far!
mets82 05-12-2013, 09:40 PM You get to the point where you get tired of watching tv. You try to get emotionally invested in a show and a)they cancel it. b)they put it on hiatus c)they move the show around.
It gets frustrating after a while.
RobbieG 05-15-2013, 05:21 PM As usual, Pavan and I are almost entirely opposites in terms of the shows we like. And, I am probably at odds with most of the viewers as well, I guess. The shows he thinks are weak (Hart of Dixie) or thinks it's good they've been canceled (90210) or are going to be canceled (Emily Owens, M.D.) are the very ones I like. The only shows I agree it was time to cancel were One Tree Hill and Gossip Girl, both of which had gotten very old.
And the show he (and presumably, many viewers) think is so great (Arrow) I don't care for--it is too dark in tone. I didn't like Smallville either--Tom Welling had no acting talent, IMO; he seemed like a block of wood--but I've noticed many (not all, but many) fans of this genre don't care if the actors are any good as long as there's lots of action. At least they moved Supernatural to air after Arrow so I can skip that night on the CW altogether. Supernatural and Nikita are also too dark and too formulaic for my taste. I've seen all that done before, and in better series.
I guess the only series I agree with Pavan on being good is The Carrie Diaries. It's a shame most of the shows I like are not liked by anyone else.
I liked the fact that CW had lots of dramas. I hate to think it's moving to so much dark action.
Robbie
Pavan 05-15-2013, 06:48 PM Robbie, I don't watch anything on The CW. I was commenting on the performance of all their shows, not quality.
