As far as I know it's very common for movers, furniture delivery people, carper cleaners, etc. to take off their shoes and wear slippers (or wear some sort of slippers over their shoes) when entering peoples homes. I don't know if this was common in the 70's or not but I can see how Fred and Lamont could take it as an insult.

Fred and Lamont would take it as a insult because they could be hurt badly if the piano falls accidently on their feet its going to hurt them painfully, you need to wear boots when your moving something heavy like like a piano.
