Up until the early 90s, it was common for the broadcast networks to rerun their old sitcoms in the daytime. The funny thing is I never watched "One Day at a Time" or "Alice" in their nighttime versions, but watched them all the time when they were being rerun in daytime! I also watched a lot of "Jeffersons", "Designing Women", and "Angie" in daytime reruns. What shows do you remember from their daytime reruns?

Yep. When I was a little kid in the early 90s I watched Full House on NBC at 11am and then Perfect Strangers on ABC at 11:30am.

Oh yeah, I use to look forward to those in the summer when I was off from school. That's how I saw "Designing Women" for the first time.

I remember growing up in the 60s and early 70s and watching reruns of THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW (which CBS renamed THE DICK VAN DYKE DAYTIME SHOW), THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW (renamed ANDY OF MAYBERRY), THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES, THE LUCY SHOW, HERE'S LUCY, GOMER PYLE: U.S.M.C., THE JACK BENNY SHOW, CANDID CAMERA and others on CBS, THE DONNA REED SHOW, THAT GIRL, BEWITCHED, LOVE AMERICAN STYLE among others on ABC but for some reason I can't remember NBC ever showing any.

NBC did show Sanford & Son reruns in the daytime for a while in the mid 70s. And really--what other sitcom could they strip? NBC's schedule was woefully lacking in half-hour comedies at the time.

Here's Lucy was briefly run by CBS mornings in the spring of '77; the first daily go-round of Three's Company reruns was on ABC in 1981.

Yeah I clearly remember Full House being shown daytime in the Summer of '91 because that very same Fall was when FH entered daily syndication.

I always thought the idea for airing sitcoms in the early morning was a test to see if certain shows would attract an audience to then sell to independent stations.

yea, now I remember when NBC reran SANFORD & SON and CHICO & THE MAN during the day. (I remember they showed S &S in the mornings but our NBC affiliate would preempt it until the afternoon) and in the early 90s THE GOLDEN GIRLS.

how come the daytime reruns of THE DICK VAN DYKE SHOW had the shows name change to THE DICK VAN DYKE DAYTIME SHOW and daytime reruns of THE ANDY GRIFFITH SHOW had the shows name change to ANDY OF MAYBERRY? Did other shows do this? If so, why? And if not why not?

Happy Days was called Happy Days Again and Laverne and Shirley was called Laverne and Shirley and Company. I dont know why they did this.

I remember as a little girl waking up on summer vacation and watching the Lucy show, Beverly Hillbillies and Family Affair. And sometimes they ran My three sons instead of the Beverly Hillbillies.

Than as a teenager and early 20's I remember Alice and One day at a time being on in the morning.

Back then, there were rules that applied when a series was syndicated but still running in prime time. Hence they could not use the same title.

I remember watching One Day at a Time and Alice reruns in the summer of 1981/82, Angie and The Facts of Life in 1984/85, The Golden Girls in 1989 and Designing Women in 1991.

The networks thought people would get confused if daytime reruns and first-run airings used the same title so that's why the reruns used a different one. I remember when I saw my first episode of Happy Days Again, when the title came on and I saw that crap I immediately turned the channel. My first thought was that ABC obviously thought I was too dumb to know the difference. Same thing happened around 1988 when the Charlotte Hornets joined the NBA, their name had come down to 2-3 finalists and Hornets was the most popular but there was a problem. Greensboro had a minor league baseball team with the same name and during a radio show the powers-that-be who were responsible for bringing the NBA to Charlotte were trying to tell everyone listening that some people might confuse the 2 if they took the name Hornets. They did and Greensboro changed their name to the Bats.

And for CHiPs they would air as CHiPs Patrol.

Another weird thing I've read is that some syndication stations would air Knight Rider severely edited into half hour episodes.

that's what I thought, but then how come some shows did it but other didn't? For example I remember both THAT GIRL and BEWITCHED were being rerun by ABC on weekday mornings while they were still airing original episodes in prime time. And they didn't change the title of the daytime repeats.

Because both Bewitched and That Girl were still aired on their original network (ABC affiiliates) and were not in syndication at the time they were on ABC weekdays. They weren't obligated to make a title change for this.

It was when, for instance, Happy Days or Laverne & Shirley reruns aired in the afternoon on an NBC affiliate in 1981 etc, that they had to change the title. Those episodes had been sold into syndication. ABC ran Happy Days some weekday mornings for a time but they didn't need to alter the title because it wasn't part of a syndicated package.

Vaguely...I think my 1st FOX affiliate WOIO played sitcoms on daytime, I think I remember "Bob Newhart Show" and "Bosom Buddies" played on there. WUAB used to a lot...now it's Trash Talk Shows and WBNX (Cleveland's CW Affiliate) still does once in awhile.

but, THE BEVERLY HILLBILLIES & MASH were still showing original episodes in prime-time on CBS when CBS was rerunning them during the day (and MASH late at night too) and they never altered the titles.

I remember NBC airing reruns of Full House around 1991 and ABC airing reruns Perfect Strangers around the same time period.

FH was on at 11:00am and PS was on at 12:00pm (right before the soap Loving)

They used to air Gilligan's Island, Sanford & Son, Good Times, Dragnet, Adam-12 and one other show that I can't remember in the afternoons here. We'd watch some of them when we got home from school.

Yes CBS was allowed to show them with the title change. If a NBC affiliate or other local channel were to show them, they would have had to change the title since they didn't "belong" to them.

One name change for a series that goes on today (If there is any station still showing it) is Kraft Suspense Theatre. When this series originally aired on NBC Not only did it have Kraft in its title there was also a voiceover saying who was starring in it. When NBC cancelled the show the syndicated verson omits the voiceover all well as the show's sponsor.

Why would Knight Rider be edited into half-hour reruns?
