I had to get glasses when I was in grade 3. I can tell you that no child wants to be set apart from the other kids in any way. So they will resist anything that they perceive will set them apart. And that certainly includes wearing glasses! I know I resisted it!!

Tell me, is there any kid out there who doesn't fear being different - especially when it comes to their physical looks? Adults still get self-conscious. My grandma had an awful time when she had to start wearing a hearing aid. I think you would be hard pressed to find anyone who is excited about being taken out of their "comfort zone."

Plus she had to compete with her perfect sister...Marcia, Marcia, Marcia!!!

There was a bit of a stigma regarding wearing glasses until contact lenses became more commonplace. I'm just a tad younger than the Brady kids and I remember hating wearing glasses in 2nd grade. By the time I could wear the horrifically painful HARD contact lenses that were the only option at the time, I was more than willing to put up with the discomfort. I spent high school with red-rimmed, painful eyes, but I felt better about myself than when I wore the old coke-bottle glasses.

And look at them now. I've seen pictures within the past 10 years of Maureen McCormick (Marcia) wearing glasses but absolutely none of Eve Plumb (Jan). So I guess they swapped places.

Jan had low self esteem in the early years of the show she would think everyone would make fun of her or call her 4 eyes at school if she wore glasses kids can be mean.

The only bad thing about glasses on Jan is that a coworker of mine is a dead ringer for her!

I think ppl's attitudes are pretty well the same, ppl ~esp kids~ like to mock and make fun of ANYONE for ANY REASON.

I remember when I got glasses in the 3rd grade I was WAY embarrased to wear them and i was very self conscious.

I would take them off at school, it was to the point the teacher had a talk with the class telling them how self conscious I was and not to make me feel on edge about waering them.
