In the episode where Edith wants to take out a loan, I know Edith gets angry at the loan officer for not granting her the loan b/c she didn't do "real work". And clearly it's played so the audience sympathizes with Edith and looks at the loan officer as the "bad guy".

BUT in the case I'm actually on HIS side.

It might have been offensive when he told Edith that he couldn't give her the loan b/c she didn't do REAL WORK, he could have phrased it better than that.

BUT he was obviosuly refering the fact she did not make an INCOME, so how could he be sure she'd be able to pay it back.

I don't think this is discrimination like it was played out to be.

I think if a MAN with no job that generates a paycheck came in to take out a loan, the loan officer would have told him the same thing.

When she asked him, "If I were a MAN would you give it to me?" and he says, "If you were a man you'd be working." And that's what starts the whole conflice b/c Edith felt he was saying her job as a housewife was NOTHING, but that is NOT the issue about the loan. What the man SHOULD have said was, "If you were a man and had NO job that generates a pay check, no I wouldn't not give it to you."

If Mike went in to take out a loan, I'm sure he'd be turned down as well b/c he doesn't bring home a paycheck.

The banks don't just GIVE OUT money to ppl if there is no way to pay it back, so I really don't know why the loan officer is played up to be the villain in this.
