Still a work in progress
I know!! I know!! It's the set of paintings hanging in Frasier's living room... I think it's the living room--
I actually knew from the very first picture but I didn't come on the site until today. I also know that you really want that painting set but I never would have guessed that you wanted them enough to paint them yourself! I bet it will be great! :)

Wow, that's impressive! I can't wait to see the finished product!

Thanks Andrea and Eileen. I've been working on it, but have been referencing the colors from a printout. My printer must have been running out of ink. Back to the drawing board on Monday. :(

I started to think about how much it would cost to have someone paint it and then I figured I would give it a shot.

My problem here is that I have been referencing an image that I printed from the computer and the colors were a little off. The reds looked like oranges and it just didn't look right.

Wow, this is more difficult than I thought.
I seem to be missing some blue haze in the red area of the left painting and some yellow in the red area of the right side.
I'm trying to focus on sections. Thus, the right painting along the side of the red area still need to be redone. It's too light.

I know nothing about art, but maybe some texture would help. I have no idea how to do that or what that means, but the originals look like they have some sort of texture to them. And for me, if I couldn't do it with a paintbrush then I'd resort to construction. Do you think there's some way you could "construct" a copy of the paintings rather than try to use only paint on them? I mean maybe you'd put paint on it eventually, but maybe you could employ some other art techniques to get closer to the original look. Like I said though, I don't really know what I'm talking about. All I know is that if my task, as a non-artsy person, was to recreate that painting set as closely as I could I would probably start with some other technique (papier mache? plaster? clay? Something hard over the canvas that you could actually cut or carve first then paint? Talk to people who make topological maps and see what they use?) I don't know-- something on top of the canvas to give it that textured look then paint over that. I don't even know if any of that is possible but I know that'd be the only way I would think I could even have a chance to pull it off and have it be even close. I would never be able to make it look like that with just paint, so I'd have to research other art techniques and figure out what I could do on top of the canvas to give it that textured look first, then color it over the top to look like the original. But if you are more of an artist than I am (which is not at all) then you shouldn't listen to me at all. :)

The original painting (I read somewhere) was done by
Laddie John Dill
using cement, glass and paint.
Although, this actual painting is not shown in his web site, his paintings have a pretty incredibly likeness:
http://laddiejohndill.com/pages/cement-glass-and-oxides.php
I have contacted him, several years ago, to see what the cost would be for a duplicate, but did not receive a reply.
I am not nearly as talented (OBVIOUSLY) to even try to use cement or glass and have to come to a realization that my painting will never come close to his talented works.
I've decided to try to use oils to see what I could do.
Notice how the blues in his upper left area looks like actual blue marble. WOW!

With further research, I found this fun bit of trivia:

Well how about that... it really was constructed. :) Still, maybe you could fashion something similar using more practical and workable materials if paint alone doesn't satisfy what you're looking for.

Thanks for all the interesting links!
