That would be Happy Days.
Neutronman67 04-25-2013, 10:37 AM No they could call the title for this show The Best 70's Show of the decade instead of That 70's Show.

MacLeaper 04-25-2013, 10:52 AM Well, think about it this way- would you watch a show called "That 2010s Show" showcasing the lives of teenagers living in present day? The whole premise of the show was in some ways lampooning the trends and events of the 1970s initially- though as the series progressed it became more of just another sitcom about teenage friends hanging out down the street- the same old thing we did last week. Not a thing to do- but talk to you. We're all alright! We're all alright! Hello Wisconsin!:)
Okay- but anyway- we have shows about teenagers hanging out that is set in present day- "Austin & Ally" on the Disney Channel would qualify and so would "iCarly" and "Victorious", but they just ended.
These shows obviously incorporate modern day technology into the show to some degree and there are some definite 2000s/2010s styles we can see on the show- but I don't think there is any point made to highlight those styles and cultural leanings and trends of the current decade on these shows.
That '70s Show did do this to some degree and that was kind of the point in the late '90s (though like I said- it deviated some from this as well.)
So obviously in the 1970s there wouldn't be the nostalgia factor for the
'70s to work for the show. But I suppose it could be interesting if it was viewed as a caricature of most teenagers in that time period. But I don't think it would be quite the same.....
I think "What's Happening" would be a good comparison for a show about teenagers hanging out in the 1970s. "Welcome Back, Kotter" could also possibly fit this category as well.
Neutronman67 04-27-2013, 07:22 PM Naw i would not watch a show about the year 2010 in 30 or 40 years everything about this decade sucks its mostly about justin bieber and lil wayne, i would watch a show called that 90's show everything from 1990-1999 i am sure millions of people would agree if they read my post lol, i hope they do make a sitcom called that 90's show in the near future a bunch of teenagers sitting around talking about the new episode of the fresh prince of bel air that's going to be on TV in a few hours for the first time.

Yong Fang 04-28-2013, 02:15 AM I think That 70's Show would have had a chance to be a popular show in the 1970's, minus the marijuana smoke. Possibly the term "dumbass" would not have been allowed, forcing Red to use another term like "Dumbbell"! Also, the teens having sex with each other could have been omplied on 70's TV but probably not shown in a sitcom context.
Slightly toned down, That 70's Show could have made it then.
Neutronman67 04-29-2013, 08:25 AM Yeah that 70's show would have been popular among teenagers in the 70's because thats how life was for them back then they could relate to being in the house as a group and getting stoned lol

Probably not, people like to watch a show about the old days. It makes them feel happy with all the crap that's in their lives now.

Okay- obviously there's a nostalgia factor here and it depends on when you were born (generally) for which era you feel most nostalgic for. Though not everyone loves the decade they grew up in- some pine for earlier decades where things were different from their current experience. Some might even yearn to have been born in a more recent decade.
But to clarify, I wasn't saying would someone watch "That 2010s Show" in 30 or 40 years- I was saying would someone watch "That 2010s Show" now? As far as I can tell, this is the original question in this thread- "Would people watch 'That '70s Show' if it was made in the 1970s?"
What I'm saying is that if that were the case, it would be a show set in what would be then present-day and if that's the case, you can watch shows actually made in the 1970s that focus on the lives of teenagers- like "What's Happening" and "Welcome Back, Kotter", etc.
I suppose it could be interesting if the premise was as follows- a show made in the '70s and supposed to reflect the then current 1970s culture- but written as if the '70s had already taken place and meant to be looking back at it and lampooning it. That would be kinda tricky to do, but certainly rather interesting.

I don't think implied sex between underage teenagers could even be written in the 70's. TV shows in that decade had to walk a fine line even with middle aged characters. On the Mary Tyler Moore Show, which was the biggest show of the 70's, the character of Mary was originally supposed to be divorced but producers knew that would be too controversial for middle America so they just made her single. And there was controversy in an episode where Mary spends the night with a date...despite the fact the character was 30 years old. Compare that to the episode of T70's Show where Eric and Donna have sex three separate times during one homework session. It couldn't be done.
Eric/Donna, the Jackie/Lori/Kelso triangle, Fez's never ending quest to do it couldn't have been done during that decade. Lori's character couldn't have existed the way she slept around and Eric and Hyde's never ending nicknames for her about what a whore she was.
The pot circle, the episode with pot brownies, the episode where Hyde got arrested for possession, the pot smoke....none of that could be aired in the actual 70's. You couldn't air that kind of material in a sitcom with actual adults characters so surely high school characters doing that would never happen.
