"Do you know my name?"

Those are the words actress Reese Witherspoon wishes she could take back.

Witherspoon said she was "deeply embarrassed" about what she said to police officers during her husband's arrest in Atlanta.

The Oscar-winning actress released a statement late Sunday apologizing for her behavior to police that began when her husband, Hollywood agent Jim Toth, was arrested early Friday for driving under the influence of alcohol.

"I clearly had one drink too many and I am deeply embarrassed about the things I said," Witherspoon said. "It was definitely a scary situation and I was frightened for my husband, but that is no excuse. I was disrespectful to the officer who was just doing his job. I have nothing but respect for the police and I'm very sorry for my behavior."

Her publicist, Meredith O'Sullivan Wasson, offered no other details.

Witherspoon, 37, was arrested on a municipal charge of disorderly conduct early Friday after a state trooper said she wouldn't stay in the car while Toth was given a field sobriety test. She was released from jail after the Friday morning arrest and was in New York on Sunday night for the premiere of her new film, "Mud." She posed for cameras on the red carpet but did not stop to talk to reporters.

The trooper noticed the car driven by her husband wasn't staying in its lane early Friday morning, so he initiated a traffic stop. He reported that Toth had droopy eyelids, watery, bloodshot eyes, and his breath smelled strongly of alcohol.

Toth told the trooper he'd had a drink, which Witherspoon said was consumed at a restaurant two hours before the traffic stop, the trooper writes.

Before the field sobriety test began, Witherspoon got out of the car, was told to get back in and obeyed, the report said. After the "Walk the Line" star got out a second time, the trooper said he warned her that she would be arrested if she left the car again.

As the sobriety test continued, "Mrs. Witherspoon began to hang out the window and say that she did not believe that I was a real police officer. I told Mrs. Witherspoon to sit on her butt and be quiet," Trooper First Class J. Pyland writes.

Toth, 42, was then placed under arrest. He was charged with driving under the influence and failure to maintain the lane.

At that point, the report says, Witherspoon got out and asked the trooper what was going on. After being told to return to the car, she "stated that she was a `US Citizen' and that she was allowed to `stand on American ground,"' the report states.

Indeed.

The trooper then began to arrest Witherspoon. The report says Witherspoon was resistant at first but was calmed down by her husband.

The officer wrote in his report: “Mrs. Witherspoon asked, “Do you know my name?” I answered, “No, I don’t need to know your name.” I then added, “right now.” Mrs. Witherspoon stated, “You’re about to find out who I am.

“Mrs. Witherspoon also stated, ‘You are going to be on national news,"" the officer's report stated. "I advised Mrs. Witherspoon that was fine."

Toth and Witherspoon were then taken to jail.

News of the arrest broke shortly before Witherspoon arrived on the "Mud" red carpet.

"I can't say anything because I don't know," said director Jeff Nichols. "I literally -- the first guy on the press line to say something was the first time I heard about it so I gotta go figure it out."

Matthew McConaughey, who plays the lead role in "Mud" and is represented by Toth, said "I'm not going to comment on that because it's too fresh."

I'm the glad the police officer didn't let her get away with her inappropriate behaviour just because she was a celebrity.

It's nice to see a celebrity "Not get special treatment" and to be treated like everyone else for a change.

This is a disappointment. It really takes her "America's Sweetheart" role down a few notches.

I didn't even know she WAS America's sweetheart until this story came out. I didn't even know America HAD a sweetheart, and if I was told that America did have a sweetheart, I would not have guessed it was her.

Who assigns these titles?

^ It's a term that has become WAY overused. I would, however, use it to describe the late, great Annette Funicello, who truly personified the phrase.

Along with "girl next door."

The term is used to describe multiple people, and Reese was definitely one of them. The term has been used in reference to Reese for years.

Yes, there have been a few ladies down through the years that have been described that way. To be honest, I don't follow pop culture lives at all, the personal lives of celebrities don't really interest me. I hadn't specifically heard anyone referred to that way in a while...

With entertainment/television/movies being so fragmented these days, it's probably been a while since anyone was "universally" declared to be America's Sweetheart... I think that the last woman (unless I'm forgetting someone obvious) to have a huge following in that way might have been Julia Roberts, back in the late 80s and through some of the 90s... in other words, back when her movies were actually pretty good.

Witherspoon has been in quite a few movies, I haven't come close to seeing all of them, but I really like her in the movies that I have seen. I think she is a very, very talented actress.

Yes! THAT'S the obvious one I forgot! Roberts was too long ago, I had a feeling there was someone I was missing.

The cop may have let them go had Reese not gone all ballistic. I read an article the other day that stated that Reese isn't as sweet as she appears and can be a real diva. She's known to get nasty if she doesn't get her way.

^ I've heard that, too, especially after she won the Oscar in 2006.

The original America's Sweetheart was silent movie actress Mary Pickford. And she was Canadian!!! :D

Mary Pickford was also one of the original founders of the once-Independent movie studio United Artists in 1919, along with Douglas Fairbanks Sr. D. W. Griffith, and Charlie Chaplin.

Reese Witherspoon Pleads No Contest, Jim Toth Admits Guilty of DUI
5/2/2013
by THR Staff

Reese Witherspoon is taking responsibility for her actions last month.

According to TMZ, the Mud star has pled no contest for her April 19 arrest for disorderly conduct when she disobeyed an officer's order to stay in the car after her husband was pulled over for suspicion of DUI. Her husband Jim Toth has pled guilty to the charges of driving under the influence.

Witherspoon -- who was not present, but was represented by her lawyer Bruce Morris -- entered the plea to physical obstruction of another and will pay a $213 fine.

Toth won't have to serve any jail time, but must perform 40 hours of community service and attend an alcohol education program. He'll also be placed on probation for 12 months.

The judge said to Toth: "Consider yourself fortunate you didn't injure your passenger [Reese] and didn't kill anyone."

The actress appeared on "Good Morning America" Thursday and apologized for her behavior.

"It's one of those nights, you know, we went out to dinner in Atlanta and we had one too many glasses of wine and we thought we were fine to drive and we absolutely were not," the actress told George Stephanopoulos.

"And it's just completely unacceptable and we are so sorry and embarrassed. And we know better. And we shouldn't have done that."
