View Full Version : A Different Kind of Protest
Smartboy 04-16-2013, 06:56 PM On a bunch of previous threads, I have written about how big of an impact the third-season episode "Samantha's Protest" had on me. Well, now I would like to mention something that took place less than an hour ago that made me think of it, yet again! Right before starting this thread, I posted one called "Heather Has Two Mommies". This was after watching several videos about the book over on Youtube. One of them was an interview of Leslea Newman who wrote the book. She mentioned having completed the book in 1988, and being unable to find a publisher for it. She and a friend who was also gay managed to raise money through donations so that they could publish it themselves. It took until 1989 for it to finally reach print. Once it hit the bookstores, it raised much controversy! There were a bunch of places where in was burned in public. Throughout the country, there were plenty of Archie Bunker types trying to keep it out of their local public schools and libraries. In Leslea's own words, this book received a lot of protest. Just hearing her say that word brought my mind right back to the third-season episode that I am so fond of! In 1984, Samantha protested to demolition of a historic mission school. In 1989, closed-minded Americans protested the existence of a book just because it was about something that was a little bit different. Funny how history repeats itself!

The follow up/companion book was titled "My Daddy's Roommate."

I read that book too, and there are also a lot of uploads about it on Youtube. In any event, nice chatting with you!

This is the third old thread that I am bringing to the top of this page this evening. I am hoping that, somewhere along the way, I am able to stimulate some new conversation!

Because things seem to be picking up a little bit on this page and because this thread did get a reply once-upon-a-time, I have decided to see what happens if I bring it up to the top now.

A short while ago, I started a thread called "It Happened Again". This thread indirectly related to the third-season episode "Samantha's Protest". At the end of my new thread, I mentioned how, in an attempt to stimulate some more conversation, I am going to bring an older thread pertaining to that topic to the top of the page. So here I am! On a side-note, I would be very interested in knowing whether anyone here is at all familiar with the books "Heather Has Two Mommies" or "Daddy's Roommate". I have read them both and I would say that, although I do not think that either one is the best children's book in the world, they both served their purpose for the times that they were written. See you around!

In the recent past, I have brought two of my old favorites to the top of this page hoping to stimulate some new conversation. No luck so far! Having reread this one, I would like to add a little bit to the topic and, at the same time, see if anyone else would like to add anything new. When I first started this thread, I mentioned the very controversial book called "Heather Has Two Mommies". You would have to read my original post to understand what that book has to do with "Gimme a Break!". The one and only person to respond to this thread was someone who mentioned another controversial book that was very similar called "Daddy's Roommate". By the way, I have read both of these books and thought that they told pretty decent stories. Well, now I would like to mention a more recent book that deals with the same topic. It is called "King and King". Some of you who have children might be familiar with this picture book. I have watched videos on You Tube in which it was read aloud. To make a long story short, it was about a queen who was tired of being the head of her country and wanted to son to take over as King so she could relax in her old age. However, before he became king he needed to find someone of royal birth to marry. Princesses from all over the world came in hopes that you would take their hand in marriage. No dice! However, one of the princesses brought her brother and it was love at first site! The minister pronounced them King and King! I understand that there is a sequential book called "King and King and Family". It is about a situation in which these two royal gay men adopt a child from South America. They have a copy at my local library. I am going to try to find the time to read it later this week. After I done so, I will be happy to tell anyone who is interested what it was like. Bye!
