DEVELOPING: Multiple casualties are reported after at least two explosions rocked the area near the finish line of the Boston Marathon, according to the Boston Herald.

Witnesses reportedly heard booms that sounded like two claps of thunder near the finish line inside the Fairmount Copley Plaza Hotel.

The explosions occurred just before 3 p.m. Video of the scene showed a number of emergency crews in the area tending to victims and blood on the ground near the finish line.

"I saw two explosions. The first one was beyond the finish line. I heard a loud bang and I saw smoke rising," Boston Herald reporter Chris Cassidy, who was running in the marathon, told the newspaper. "I kept running and I heard behind me a loud bang. It looked like it was in a trash can or something...There are people who have been hit with debris, people with bloody foreheads.”

A photographer with Fox affiliate WFXT reported seeing a number of victims with lost limbs.

Competitors and race organizers were crying as they fled the chaos. Bloody spectators were being carried to the medical tent that had been set up to care for fatigued runners.

"There are a lot of people down," said one man, whose bib No. 17528 identified him as Frank Deruyter of North Carolina. He was not injured, but marathon workers were carrying one woman, who did not appear to be a runner, to the medical area as blood gushed from her leg. A Boston police officer was wheeled from the course with a leg injury that was bleeding.

About three hours after the winners crossed the line, there was a loud explosion on the north side of Boylston Street, just before the photo bridge that marks the finish line. Another thunderous explosion could be heard a few seconds later.

Runner Laura McLean of Toronto said she heard two explosions outside the medical tent.

"There are people who are really, really bloody," McLean said. "They were pulling them into the medical tent."

Cherie Falgoust was waiting for her husband, who was running the race. "I was expecting my husband any minute," she said. "I don't know what this building is ... it just blew. Just a big bomb, a loud boom, and then glass everywhere. Something hit my head. I don't know what it was. I just ducked."

Boston Marathon Bombing Suspect Photos Released; FBI Searching for "Suspect 1" and "Suspect 2"
04/18/2013

Authorities released photographs of two individuals -- identified as "Suspect 1" and "Suspect 2" -- wanted in connection to the pair of deadly blasts at the Boston Marathon finish line Monday.

The images, revealed from behind two black poster boards, show the two individuals walking through a crowd near Boylston Street moments before the terror attack, which killed three people and wounded at least 180 others.

"These images should be the only ones that the public should use to assist us," FBI Special Agent Richard DesLauriers said in a Thursday press conference, discouraging people from paying attention to unofficial photos published in the mainstream media and on the Internet.

"The only photos that should be officially relied on are the ones before you," DesLauriers said.

"Suspect 1" is wearing a dark hat.

"Suspect 2" is wearing a white hat.

"They appear to be associated," DesLauriers said. "Suspect 2" dropped a backpack at the site of the second explosion in front of the Forum restaurant and proceeded west, he added.

Another FBI agent told The Huffington Post that he believed that the photos were provided to investigators by the public.

DesLauriers promised that arrests would be made, saying "all responsible for the bombings will be brought to justice."

The FBI considers these men armed and dangerous. They request that the public phone 1-800-CALL-FBI with information that could lead to an arrest.

The much anticipated announcement follows a day dominated by misreporting that police were ready to announce an arrest in the case. By Thursday morning, however, most outlets said the photos in question were circulating through law enforcement agencies and would soon be available to the public.

Speaking at an interfaith healing service earlier Thursday, President Obama conjured imagery of perseverance, future parades on Boylston Street, and the 2014 Marathon.

"We may be momentarily knocked off our feet, but we will pick ourselves up. We will keep going. We will finish the race," Obama said at the Cathedral of the Holy Cross in Boston.

Boston Marathon Bombing Suspect Killed, Another On The Loose (VIDEO, PHOTOS, LIVE UPDATES)

A violent crime spree across Greater Boston that took the lives of a campus police officer and one of the suspects in the Marathon bombings morphed into a desperate door-to-door search for a man believed to be the second bomber in Monday’s dual blasts.

After a string of explosions and volleys of gunfire that seriously injured a transit officer, police cordoned off much of Watertown, Mass. Residents were ordered to “shelter in place” and not trust anyone they might see other than uniformed officers.

A Massachusetts State Police public information officer told HuffPost reporter Michael McLaughlin, "We believe this to be a terrorist, we believe he came here to kill people."

At daybreak, law enforcement planned to launch a house-to house search through much of Watertown as they sought one half of the duo believed to have killed three and wounded more than 170 at the Boston Marathon finish line on Monday.

A chaotic Thursday night across Cambridge and Watertown started at 10:30 p.m. with a convenience store holdup that led to the shooting of an MIT campus officer who died later from multiple gunshot wounds.

Police sped away from the campus crime scene amid reports of an armed carjacking of a Mercedes SUV nearby.

The breakneck pursuit of the stolen car led to Watertown, where suspects detonated explosives in the direction of officers before exchanging gunfire.

“I heard three loud bangs,” a witness told HuffPost. “It sounded like a car being dropped on the ground.”

The threat to anyone in the area was so serious that the police planned robocalls to warn residents, CNN reported.

Hundreds of officers drawn from many departments spent hours looking for additional explosives, criminal evidence and, perhaps most importantly, a man deemed to be armed and dangerous.

One suspect died in the exchange of gunfire with police in Watertown. Neither suspects' identity was released.

The long night followed a day in which the FBI released video footage and photos of the baseball cap-wearing pair seen carrying suspicious backpacks which they dropped at the Boylston Street finish line.

The suspects are brothers Dzhokhar and Tamerlan Tsarnaev who are originally from Chechnya,a Muslim area of Russia which has fought for independence against that country. What sights they saw growing up there in terms of violent conflict is speculation at the moment, but one can guess that they became radicalized at an early age before they entered the United States in 2001. The older of the brothers Tamerlan,26,died in a shoot out with Police last night, whilst his younger brother is still on the run. Boston residents have been told to remain indoors. By all accounts 19 year-old Dzhokhar was a model student of medicine and the whole thing is one great tragedy, though of course there is no excuse for the wanton violence which they perpetrated which left an 8 year-old boy dead and others losing limbs.

April 28, 2013 11:59 PM

BOSTON (CBS/AP) — The angry and grieving mother of the Boston Marathon bombing suspects insists that her sons are innocent and that she’s no terrorist.

But Zubeidat Tsarnaeva is drawing increased attention after federal officials say Russian authorities intercepted her phone calls, including one in which she vaguely discussed jihad with her elder son. In another, she was recorded talking to someone in southern Russia who is under FBI investigation in an unrelated case, U.S. officials said.

In photos of her as a younger woman, Tsarnaeva wears a low-cut blouse and has her hair teased like a 1980s rock star. After she arrived in the U.S. from Russia in 2002, she went to beauty school and did facials at a suburban day spa.

But in recent years, people noticed a change. She began wearing a hijab and cited conspiracy theories about 9/11 being a plot against Muslims.

Tsarnaeva insists there is no mystery and that she’s just someone who found a deeper spirituality. She fiercely defends her sons — Tamerlan, who was killed in a gunfight with police, and Dzhokhar, who was wounded and captured.

“It’s all lies and hypocrisy,” she told The Associated Press in Dagestan. “I’m sick and tired of all this nonsense that they make up about me and my children. People know me as a regular person, and I’ve never been mixed up in any criminal intentions, especially any linked to terrorism.”

At a news conference in Dagestan with her ex-husband Anzor Tsarnaev last week, Tsarnaeva appeared overwhelmed with grief one moment, defiant the next. “They already are talking about that we are terrorists, I am terrorist,” she said. “They already want me, him and all of us to look (like) terrorists.”

Amid the scrutiny, Tsarnaeva and Anzor say they have put off the idea of any trip to the U.S. to reclaim their elder son’s body or try to visit Dzhokhar in jail. Tsarnaev told the AP on Sunday he was too ill to travel to the U.S. Tsarnaeva faces a 2012 shoplifting charge at the Natick Mall, though it was unclear whether that was a deterrent.

Tsarnaeva arrived in the U.S. in 2002, settling in a working-class section of Cambridge. With four children, Anzor and Zubeidat qualified for food stamps and were on and off public assistance benefits for years. The large family squeezed itself into a third-floor apartment.

Zubeidat took classes at the Catherine Hinds Institute of Esthetics, before becoming a state-licensed aesthetician. Anzor, who had studied law, fixed cars.

By some accounts, the family was tolerant.

Bethany Smith, a New Yorker who befriended Zubeidat’s two daughters, said in an interview with Newsday that when she stayed with the family for a month in 2008 while she looked at colleges, she was welcomed even though she was Christian and had tattoos.

“I had nothing but love over there. They accepted me for who I was,” Smith told the newspaper. “Their mother, Zubeidat, she considered me to be a part of the family. She called me her third daughter.”

Zubeidat said she and Tamerlan began to turn more deeply into their Muslim faith about five years ago after being influenced by a family friend, named “Misha.” The man, whose full name she didn’t reveal, impressed her with a religious devotion that was far greater than her own, even though he was an ethnic Armenian who converted to Islam.

“I wasn’t praying until he prayed in our house, so I just got really ashamed that I am not praying, being a Muslim, being born Muslim. I am not praying. Misha, who converted, was praying,” she said.

By then, she had left her job at the day spa and was giving facials in her apartment. One client, Alyssa Kilzer, noticed the change when Tsarnaeva put on a head scarf before leaving the apartment.

“She had never worn a hijab while working at the spa previously, or inside the house, and I was really surprised,” Kilzer wrote in a post on her blog. “She started to refuse to see boys that had gone through puberty, as she had consulted a religious figure and he had told her it was sacrilegious. She was often fasting.”

Kilzer wrote that Tsarnaeva was a loving and supportive mother, and she felt sympathy for her plight after the April 15 bombings. But she stopped visiting the family’s home for spa treatments in late 2011 or early 2012 when, during one session, she “started quoting a conspiracy theory, telling me that she thought 9/11 was purposefully created by the American government to make America hate Muslims.”

“It’s real,” Tsarnaeva said, according to Kilzer. “My son knows all about it. You can read on the Internet.”

In the spring of 2010, Zubeidat’s eldest son got married in a ceremony at a Boston mosque that no one in the family had previously attended. Tamerlan and his wife, Katherine Russell, a Rhode Island native and convert from Christianity, now have a child who is about 3 years old.

Zubeidat married into a Chechen family but was an outsider. She is an Avar, from one of the dozens of ethnic groups in Dagestan. Her native village is now a hotbed of an ultraconservative strain of Islam known as Salafism or Wahabbism.

It is unclear whether religious differences fueled tension in their family. Anzor and Zubeidat divorced in 2011.

About the same time, there was a brief FBI investigation into Tamerlan Tsarnaev, prompted by a tip from Russia’s security service.

The vague warning from the Russians was that Tamerlan, an amateur boxer in the U.S., was a follower of radical Islam who had changed drastically since 2010. That led the FBI to interview Tamerlan at the family’s home in Cambridge. Officials ultimately placed his name, and his mother’s name, on various watch lists, but the inquiry was closed in late spring of 2011.

After the bombings, Russian authorities told U.S. investigators they had secretly recorded a phone conversation in which Zubeidat had vaguely discussed jihad with Tamerlan. The Russians also recorded Zubeidat talking to someone in southern Russia who is under FBI investigation in an unrelated case, according to U.S. officials who spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the investigation with reporters.

The conversations are significant because, had they been revealed earlier, they might have been enough evidence for the FBI to initiate a more thorough investigation of the Tsarnaev family.

Anzor’s brother, Ruslan Tsarni, told the AP from his home in Maryland that he believed his former sister-in-law had a “big-time influence” on her older son’s growing embrace of his Muslim faith and decision to quit boxing and school.

While Tamerlan was living in Russia for six months in 2012, Zubeidat, who had remained in the U.S., was arrested at the Natick Mall and accused of trying to shoplift $1,624 worth of women’s clothing from a department store.

She failed to appear in court to answer the charges that fall, and instead left the country.

Before the press whip up more hatred against whichever religious group is in the news this month I would suggest we take a step back on this story for a moment. It would be easy to demonize the shoplifter mother as an ingrate immigrant to your country, but has she really gone as far as to goad her sons into terrorism when her grief at their loss appears all too real, raw as it is at this moment days from the tragedy.

It's all too easy of course to profess that Islam is a religion of peace after the events of 9/11 in New York,7/7 in London, the Madrid train bombings and the foiled transatlantic bomb plot, but that's what the mainstream religion is,and in my opinion Zubeidat Tsarnaeva's sons were brainwashed by a hard clique who are the real enemies, who must be rooted out with all the increased necessary spending on intelligence this involves, not on tanks which your army doesn't even want.

It's bad no matter which way you look at it. This woman is beyond scary.

Maybe, but I would caution against rhetoric which might lead to an Anders Behring Breivik incident in your country, not that I am accusing you personally of such language.

Boston Police Announce 3 More Suspects in Custody for Marathon Bombings
05/01/2013

The Boston Police Department announced that three more suspects connected to the deadly bombings at last month's Boston Marathon are in custody.

The police made the announcement with a Twitter message Wednesday morning.

"Three additional suspects taken into custody in Marathon bombing case. Details to follow."

The three suspects being held by the police are college students who allegedly helped Dzhokhar Tsarnaev after the double bombing near the finish line on April 15, the Boston Globe reported.

"Please be advised that there is not a threat to public safety," the police announced in a statement. "There is no additional info to release at this time. Additional details will be provided when they become available."

Yes, she's scary, but I think there's more mystery with Tamerline's widow. Why in the world would she turn to Islam? He must of had her brainwashed!

Has anyone heard anymore about those two FBI agents who were involved in the Boston marathon case that died from a helicopter training exercise ? That seemed rather suspicious.
