Cory was always ignorant, but he definitely got smarter every season. Shawn was pretty dumb most of the time in the first two or three seasons but he was a lot smarter by the show's end.

Eric in my opinion only really got to be too much in season 7. Before then he did a lot of dumb things but he was still sane.

Yeah they made eric slow in season 7 to see if the ratings would go up, when a show has been going on for decades or years they run out of plot episodes they get desperate so they try to make the characers act silly or crazy to see if the ratings will boost up lol.
