The world of sitcoms is a shaky situation at best. Most of the time, the simpler a sitcom is, the more popular it becomes. This is the only way I can explain the success of Two Broke Girls and the continued struggles of shows like Community and Parks and Recreation. Sometimes, things don't work out the way the creators of the show intended, but in the shark filled waters of network TV, shows have to be open to changing at a moment's notice. Sometimes that means shifting the focus off the intended main characters onto someone who has captured the country's imagination. Below are seven examples of exactly that (well, six and one "go with me").

I agree with that list and will add another:

Lost In Space- The Robinson family gets hopelessly lost in space, cutting edge sci-fi stories as the season progressed the focus shifted to Will, Dr. Smith and The Robot.

Alice- Flo became popular as she did it created a rift with Linda Lavin the star.
