I was just thinking about this story as I watched it today...I have to wonder what has become of her family. Are her parents still alive?
The thing that has always struck me about this case is the manner in which she was murdered. That person had to have been an expert shot or something... what are the odds of her assassin hitting the car while it was moving, much less having the bullet hit the car in such a precise manner, with it going through the trunk and into her heart???

I live about an hour from where this happened. Her parents are still alive. There were lots of articles about her when it was the 30th anniversary. Both parents talked to the media.

They were either an expert "shot" or she unfortunately had some of the worst "luck" ever in the fact that it went right through her heart.
I didn't know that there was an actual photo of the crime scene in the early morning hours that it happened: http://www.burkesheriff.org/hinson.htm

I still think it was someone (possible the one who was causing her to have insomnia and taking showers in the middle of the night) who fired at her so she would pull over and unintentionally got her right in the heart. I think it was this person who pulled her out of the car, unbelieving that he had actually hit her and trying to revive her. Then he fled after realizing what he had done.
I can't believe her parents still don't have answers after all these years. :(

I think it was a little of both. Even an expert shot would need a little luck here, I would think. Police believe the shot was fired from under the I-40 bridge. This picture shows how far apart the two points were, the bridge in the background and the wreathe to the right where her car rolled back into the ditch.

Though it's great we have one and can see it, there is bit of an optical illusion going on in that photograph. Maybe someone that lives closer can give a better estimate, but I don't think the distance between the bridge and where the car was found is over even 400 meters or so. Someone even without a scope could reasonably hit a target from that distance. What bothers me is the steep incline from the bridge north on MSM Road, and the fact that the shooting was done in the dead of night from some distance (apparently).

that distance does seem a little too far apart.. maybe her car was pushed to that spot??
