I loved the episode when Mel turned Alice's apartment into a restaurant. I think he lost his real diner in a gambling bet. I vaguely remember the new owner trying to turn the diner into a fancy, upscale eatery. That didn't work out too well.

I think it was a season when Flo was still part of the series, but I'm not exactly sure which season it was.

The episode you're thinking of was the one where Mel sold the diner to a stuffy fellow named Randolph, played by Hans Conreid. He changed the name of the diner to "Randolph's Rendezvous" and the waitresses rebelled against his humorless authority and quit.

Okay, it's been so many years since I've seen that episode, so I wasn't sure if Mel lost the diner in a bet, or if he retired.

Randolph's Rendezvous! I remember that guy being really snooty!

Just watched this 2-part episode last night--definitely one of the best of Season 3. It was a fun idea to have Mel operate the diner out of Alice's apartment and a great way to incorporate all the regular and semi-regular characters like Chuck and Jason into those scenes. I also liked how we see and hear about Vera and Flo's new jobs.

The only criticism I have is that I never cared for Alice's "Sam Butler" character. She played him with that Italian-mob accent yet shouldn't his name have been more ethnic than 'Butler'?

I think thats 2 different episodes. He did bet the dinner to his bookie in exchange for getting his car back. They all were trying to break their habits in that episode. Vera: Smoking, Alice: Chocolate, Flo: Coffee and Mel's gambling problem. They all stayed the weekend at Alice's place to make sure they all didn`t broke their bad habits.
I never seen the episode where he sells the dinner and sets up in at Alice`s, but it would be interesting to know how he got it back.
I`ve seen the last episode and he sells the dinner then and gives everyone money in cow shaped creamers. (If I remember correctly)

It was so obvious to me that "Sam Butler" was really a woman. And yes, since Alice was pretending to be an Italian mobster type, she should have made the name "Sam Buittoni" or something ethnic instead of Butler.

That was an episode called "Block those kicks" from season 3.
