Not sure how many of you have seen this one, but hooooooo boy this was a weird one.
This happened in small town Maryland in the late 90's/early 2000's. It was the case of Marta Bradley, a classical musician, who was being stalked by a co-worker at her day job, Alan Chmurny. Alan was defined as a brilliant, well-educated chemist, who had several patents and was Vice President of the company they worked at. They had a friendly, platonic relationship until one day Marta criticized his deviled eggs (which he put caviar on them). Alan's mood changed and he began a 4 year campaign of terror that included stalking and harrassment. He broke into her house several times and stole her bras and panties and gold earrings he had given her. He vandalized her car on several occasions, and even stole the keys to her car when she was in the middle of a concert (she could hear the keys dangling as they were being stolen).
Marta contacted the authorities on numerous occasions, but they were never able to do anything due to lack of evidence, and that this happened in several different counties (Marta lived in one county, worked in another, had gigs all over the place). Alan, however, used his good standing in the community and filed a lawsuit against her, and even got her husband arrested at one point when he staked out his wife's car (which Alan vandalized that day which led to an altercation between the two men.)
The campaign of terror escalated when Alan attempted to kill her by placing liquid mercury in the air ducts of her car (which would have turned to gas when she turned on the air conditioner, which would have eventually killed her). Marta, who had a baby girl by this point, noticed it before turning on her car though. Alan was arrested, tried and faced a jury. The events on the 5th day of the trial were interrupted by 9/11, with New York City about a half hour south. The jury elected to continue the trial. Alan was found guilty, and ingested a cyanide tablet right then and there in the courtroom, and had announced to his defense lawyer he did so and said he'd be dead in ten minutes. Alan died the next day at 1:55 p.m.
Quite the bizarre case.
