Fatal Shooting at an Ashtabula Church

(Ashtabula) - One person has been shot and killed at a church service on Sunday afternoon.

The Ashtabula County Coroner's Office confirms with that the homicide happened at the Church of God in Christ on Hiawatha Avenue. One person is dead, and a supsect is in custody.

Investigators say the attack happened at 1:15pm. So far, the motive is unclear. Calls to the church have gone unanswered.

Paster David Howard Jr. tells Newsradio WTAM 1100 that he had just finished his sermon when a member took out a gun, and shot his father in the head.

Howard says the congregation was stunned, but members were able to hold the son until police arrived. He has the man in his 40s was a long time member. He always seemed like a good person, but today he was speaking in a "crazy" manner.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol and Ashtabula Sheriff's Office is assisting the Ashtabula Police Department at this time.

That's true. It sounds like a mix of premeditation and mental illness.

just because someone shoots someone it does not mean that they have "mental illness", and it shouldn't be a reasonable defense for murder unless the person is (and has been) completely unable to function in society, like a schizophrenic.

this is a terrible tragedy, but i agree that bringing a gun suggests premeditation.

A rational person does not shoot someone in a public place with a bunch of witnesses. Mental illness or not, the killer is a dangerous lunatic and needs to be locked up.
