1. When she showed up at the interview she walks up on the lady at the office and stands directly behind her and says hello

2. Then when asked about her experience in secretary work she mentions Rob's place:lol:

3. Then when she goes back to Rob she burns bridges with him because she had a nasty exit not realizing she still had to complete her probation period

4. On her 1st day she was not willing to learn and observe, she just wanted to jump right in with limited experience. Why not learn from the experience secretary ? lol

5. She could have used the opportunity to learn and network with the people she was working with

Shirley should have asked that office manager lady to let Helen (the experienced secretary) train her.

Yes, the big boss president of the company sure was a bigot, but the other guy was not. He was a nice guy and I could tell that he really liked and respected Shirley. He was impressed with her typing when he said "it's not bad. It's not good, but it's not bad." Shirley could have gotten the nice man on her side and she could have asked him to have Helen train her.

Before that, Shirley was horrible to Rob. She could have given him a few days notice. She just dumped him without a second thought. That was mean.

Yup the guy who interview her was very cool and she could have networked with him and tried to develop a rapport with the lady name Liz and then could have took that experience elsewhere.

And yeah you don't leave a job the way she did lol

But I am kind of confused as to why she applied for a secretary job when she had no experience??? LOL

The cool office guy definitely would have helped Shirley with job training. He was in her corner and he could have been a tremendous ally for her. Shirley was a fool not to use that to her advantage. Sure, that Liz lady was snooty, but I think she would have come around. And with the nice office guy on Shirley's side, he would have gotten Liz to have Helen train Shirley. It could have been a nice work environment for Shirley. The only jerk at the company was the president boss guy. And Shirley didn't have to deal with him much. She really should have at least tried to co-exist with the office people. She threw away a great opportunity.

Yeah, I'm also confused as to why Shirley applied for a secretary job that she had no experience for. I remember when she was still working at Rob's, she did tell Rerun that she was practicing her short-hand, but she knew she wasn't a great typist.

And because of that she had to tell them the only job she had was at a restaurant lol. She got off on the wrong foot with liz because of the bad 1st impression she made.

Why would shirley walk up behind that woman and stand so close LOL

Can u imagine doing that on a interview when meeting someone the 1st time? lol

Shirley sounded like a complete idiot when she was going on about how her last job was at "Rob's Continental Cuisine." And she acted like an even bigger fool when they hired her and she was gushing saying that she would come in at 7 instead of 9 am or even just sleep over!

And she made Rob's place sound fancy like she was applying at another diner LOL

But she was right about getting their at 8:30am the 1st day. Usually with any job you show up a half hour early the 1st day

Shirley should have showed up a little early for her first day. Notice how the other secretary (Helen) was already there when Shirley got in.

50 words a minute sounds okay. I took a typing class back when I was in high school, because I had to take an elective course. Anyway, the class was only for one semester, but I caught on pretty quick. And because of that class, I can type blindfolded or without looking. In fact, looking at the keyboard would just hinder me. But I have no idea how many WPM I type.

My typing speed increased when I had to type all those papers in college

And that typewriter that raj had is the same one my grandpop had back when I was a kid. lol

You had to be real good not to make a mistake on those things

Yes, those old typewriters are the same kind that I was taught on when I was taking the high school class. That was 1985. I was a freshman. When my mom was alive, she had typing jobs and she was super fast. It sounded like 200 WPM

She should have answered the phone with something like this: "Good afternoon (or morning.) This is Shirley Wilson of Ace Balloon. How may I help you?"

They could have maybe had her answer the phones while the other typed. That wouldn't have been too bad since shirley seemed to get comfortable with the customer role pretty quickly

Shirley did seem to have a knack for customer service relations. She took two orders while the other ladies were away. Since her typing wasn't so great, it would make more sense if they had her on phones while Helen typed. And maybe Shirley could do some filing and opening the daily mail. That would have been enough to keep her busy. But Liz had her just watering the 3 lousy office plants for the day!

LOL, exactly, filing and answering the phone should have been her primary duty at the job.

Any job I ever had, I faxed over a copy of my resume. Back in the 70s, Shirley should have mailed her resume to the Ace Balloon people.

And then she had trouble maintaining her composure and always saying something negative to the wrong person. When the old white man came out she didn't know who he was but she was so ready to clown him lol

She had to know he was someone important if he was walking around with a suit on:lol:

Yep, she probably thought he was just some random kook who wandered into the office. His fancy suit should have tipped her off that he was an important guy.

I don't think the President of the firm was a bigot. Back in the 70's it was the law that companies had to hire black people, this was touched on in All In The Family, when Mike lost out on a job to a black candidate.
