View Full Version : Would Laverne and Shirley be lesbians now?
Yong Fang 03-30-2013, 02:39 AM If this show was made now, would Laverne and Shirley be lesbians? They about were anyway, so why not take it to the next step?
Lenny and Squggy were definitely homosexual.
shotzette 03-30-2013, 10:28 AM I don't think that Laverne and Shirley were gay, although I did get some signals from Shirley... :-)
I don't think if the series was re-imagined today, they would choose to make the characters gay. I mean, "Two Broke Girls" is pretty much a rehash of "Laverne & Shirley" and the two main characters are straight.
robyrob 03-30-2013, 11:16 AM why would they have to be gay just because they are two women living together as friends and roommates? I don't think Lenny and Squiggy were gay either, I just think they were bad with women.
the problem with the way they portray gays on TV nowadays is that they always make such a big deal about it and go waaaay overboard with the stupid gay stereotypes; gay people can be funny without their sexual identity being their only punchline.
Mr. Drucker 03-30-2013, 11:20 AM Alot of people could probably derive homosexuality from alot of characters.Case in point:the urban legend that claims Bert and Ernie from "Sesame Street" were indeed lovers. And they were just puppets!

Oh, puh-leeeeeze!
TVFactFan 03-30-2013, 03:03 PM I can see the OP's point
In 2013, it would be odd for two woman to be living together for so many years when they were beyond the age of 22. So most would probably assume that they were secretly gay.

Ant-Lox 03-31-2013, 12:37 AM I picture a series with Laverne & Lenny sharing a loft with Shirley & Squiggy, you know, the initials match up nicely. They girls would be working at the Pizza Bowl (Now with 32 lanes!) while the guys work for UPS or FedEx.
Mr. Drucker 04-01-2013, 10:12 AM We can only hazily assume what these girls' social habits might have been in the new millenium as not only was the show conceived back in the very different times of the '70's.but the ACTION took place way back in the 50's,an era that pales even MORE in comparison with the current social climate in terms of what network TV has considered suitable for family viewing over the years.Back then, you couldn't even say "hell".Nowadays,it seems nearly EVERYTHING has one of those "parental guidance" controls. In the 50's and '70's,if material was considered to be a bit too "risque" at ANY level,it simply wasn't allowed.Core societal values have obviously changed alot since the days of "Leave It To Beaver","Father Knows Best" and "Donna Reed".

You want to see what Laverne & Shirley would be like in the new millennium? Watch Two Broke Girls. What I've seen reminds me somewhat of L&S. Two working class girls struggling to get by.
Ant-Lox 04-05-2013, 02:54 PM Laverne and Shirley were not choir girls, Shirley brings up being a virgin more than a few times, and Laverne was perpetually horny.

Exactly! Rewatching the shows as an adult has given me a much greater appreciation of Lenny & Squiggy. They *really* snuck some stuff under the censors' noses back then.

What type of things did they sneak pass the censors?

There was an episode when Laverne thought she was pregnant.
Ant-Lox 04-07-2013, 07:07 PM Yes, that one struck me as pretty raunchy. She basically doesn't know if she had sex or not with one of her co workers at a party, it was not what I expected to see at all.

How many years did they live together? Shirley did get married. Are you saying in todays society each girl would be living with her boyfriend. Yeah you could be right. Living is a lot different than 50 years ago. I always feel you have to have some love for a guy. You really don't need to love a girl to live with her. Well maybe if you are gay.
Interesting thinking post!!!
Coffeecup 04-17-2013, 06:40 PM What about Oscar and Felix of the ODD Couple. Would they each be living with a girlfriend? It is out of date to be living with the same sex apartment mate these days. ?

Both of them were too damm old to be sharing an apt which to me made the show weird. That's something 2 guys should be doing in the age range of 20 to 24
Coffeecup 04-17-2013, 06:58 PM Well I guess the answer is yes. I would have enjoyed sharing a place with someone at any age.
visaman666 04-19-2013, 10:19 PM You realize of course that Laverne and Shirley started out as characters on one episode of Happy Days, where Fonzie plays matchmaker to Ritchie?
biffbronson 05-05-2013, 06:54 AM Lenny and Squggy were definitely homosexual.
"Definitely?" Nope. For example, if Squiggy is homosexual, why does he go ape, biting his own arm, when a gorgeous girl passes by? If Lenny is gay, why does he drool over the same woman? Why does Lenny offer to marry Laverne? Anyone can find numerous other scenes that will disprove your claim.
Statements like this are specious and just not supported by facts. I suggest you watch Ellen Degeneres, The Chew, Steven & Chris, Christopher Lowell, or any one of numerous other shows, as apparently (judging from your Big Bang Theory thread) you have a desire to watch gays on TV -- but your implication in this case is purely a fantasy. It's odd that you want to take a flighty '70s series and turn it into something that it's not.
TVFactFan 05-05-2013, 10:40 AM The way both characters on the DVD cover you would think they were a COUPLE instead of best friends
lucy&vivfan 06-01-2013, 02:13 PM That is exactly why "The Odd Couple" was never a big hit. It did well in the larger cities, like LA, New York and Chicago, but in the rural areas of America in the early 1970s, they couldn't figure out why two middle-aged men would be living together. That's why "The Odd Couple" limped along for five seasons. Interestingly, people seem to not question two women of any age living together, hence "Laverne & Shirley" was a bigger success.
Coffeecup 06-01-2013, 02:37 PM I see the ODD Couple as Oscar staying a few days with Felix and then finding a place of his own. I tend to think he could pay for a new apartment on his own. As for Laverne and Shirley they were just scraping by. BUt tv isn't real life.

Yeah it was ODD because why the hell would i want to live with another man? lol
welcome to the boards
gidgetgrape 06-01-2013, 05:38 PM To me, assuming that two people of the same gender can't be in a platonic relationship is immature and homophobic.

Platonic friendship yes but not living together over 40

What do you think retirement homes are? People over 40 living together. I'm just saying it's possible for two or more people of the same gender to live together without there being any hanky panky.

It's a big difference between living in a senior home and two people living together in a apt

have you ever even WATCHED the show? they both had just gotten over a divorce, and a major life-changing event like that may require a longer adjustment time than just a couple of episodes.
have you even considered that after many years of living with someone (a spouse) that they weren't ready to be completely alone? If either one of them had actually found a woman (which they were clearly too flawed to do at the time) then they probably would have changed their living arrangements.

Also, have you tried pricing rentals in major metropolitan areas? Southern California (even Burbank!) is pricier than most housing markets in the country. Don't get me started on San Francisco, NYC, Washington, and other major cities.
Most people's housing options improve when there is more rent money coming in, even if that means having a roommate.
