Gimme a Break! The hit '80s sitcom, Gimme a Break! is coming to TV One! Hot off of their acquisition of What's Happening!! in March, TV One will add Gimme a Break! to its schedule beginning Friday, May 3, 2013. The sitcom will join the Friday night comedy block featuring classic sitcoms. The series has not regularly aired on cable in about 15 or so years when USA Network aired it weekday mornings. The series has aired in a couple of markets in local syndication in recent years, but that's it. We last saw the sitcom on cable back in 2006 when TV One aired a special day marathon in celebration of the series' first season coming to DVD. However, it was just a stunt marathon and this will be a regular addition! TV One will air Gimme a Break! Fridays from 8-9pm and also 11pm-12am beginning Friday, May 3. It will kick-off the new Friday night comedy block line-up. Sanford & Son will return to the TV One line-up and air Fridays 9-10pm (encores 12-1am). What's Happening!! will be moving timeslots to 10-11pm now, instead of the current 11pm-12am hour. The series will also encore 1-2am. Only Gimme a Break! doesn't encore, as the 11pm-12am airings are different from 8-9pm. With the addition of Gimme a Break! and the return of Sanford & Son, this means That's My Mama and The Jeffersons are not going to be a part of the Friday night comedy block schedule. Not to worry, as they are still airing on the schedule on other days, with The Jeffersons remaining weekday mornings and its Tuesday daytime marathon block. You'll also see sitcom marathons/stunts continue on Saturdays after the Good Times block beginning at 2pm, with What's Happening!! getting a block on Saturday, May 4 from 2-6pm featuring the first eight episodes. You will also see Sanford & Son and What's Happening!! pop-up Sunday mornings with an hour each from 8-10am beginning May 5. No word if Gimme a Break! will regularly air yet on any other day besides Fridays, but you'll for sure see it pop-up on the Saturday stunt block from time to time after 2pm.

In Gimme a Break!, the late singer/actress Nell Carter starred as Nell Harper, housekeeper and den mother to the three daughters of the Kanisky Family, headed by Dolph Sweet as the recently widowed local police chief. Controversial in its day for the 'stereotypical' set-up of a wise-cracking and overweight Black housekeeper who takes care of a white family, the show nevertheless endured six seasons on the strength of Carter's powerful persona, strong comic timing and musical chops. The show featured rare guest appearances from some of the biggest stars, 'before they were stars', including Whitney Houston, Dennis Haysbert, and Danny Glover.

Yay! I love "Gimme A Break!" - I used to watch this when it first aired as a child- it's great to see a childhood '80s classic back on the air.:)

That's good...the show is actually less stereotypical than something like Tyler Perry Shows.

The show "Gimme a Break" had people who would later be stars such as The Lawrence Brothers Joey and Matthew, Lara Jill Miller (from what I heard was good friends with Nell Carter), and...Rosie O'Donnel!

If you like sitcoms, I think that there is a very good chance that you will enjoy "Gimme a Break!". It had a lot of very good story lines throughout its run.

I'm confident that this show will not last on TV One if the jeffersons couldn't remain on Friday nights.

So I will watch GAB as long as I can because I'm sure it will be gone

There is no set Saturday schedules besides the morning Good Times. They encore The Jeffersons, That's My Mama and What's Happening!! on some Saturdays. And I posted that Jeffersons marathon on the story with Gimme a Break, but you never read carefully.

I will enjoy GAB for the one month it airs on TV one because I;m confident it won't have a audience on TV One. This show is Antenna TV material

I am going to have to confess that I do not know a whole lot about TV One or Antenna TV. What do you think there is about "Gimme a Break!" that makes it more suitable for the latter than the former?

TV One is geared to black audiences kind of like BET and I feel that since GAB has a mostly cast, the people who watch TV one won't get into the show. Now Antenna TV has a fanbase of all races and not just one certain group of people which is why I think it would have a better chance surviving on that channel than TV one.

So that's why I don't think GAB won't last on TV one but i hope wrong.

But how do you know that "The Jeffersons" isn't doing well on Friday night? It's plastered all over TV ONE. Maybe this change is being done to make room for Gimmie A Break. The network could be changing things up on purpose for all we know.

I had a supervisor back in 2011 who would say that all the time and must like the way it sounded.........."the proof is in the pudding" LOL

I was like......."STFU"

Anyway, because Sanford and Son is being added as a new addition to friday nights. That's my Mama and the Jeffersons must have lower ratings than What's Happening and Good Times

Both of those shows get a fair amount of airtime on the network. What's Happening is still on schedule because its a new addition. I can't wait until TV One goes to season three. That is where I really began enjoying the show.

One thing I like about TV One, they air the openings and closings intact with no shrunken credits or voice-overs. Not many networks do that any more. They're still the syndicated cuts though.

Well when a show is being shown on Cable that will always generate discussion. Now the message boards who used to be active are no longer active because it's not being shown on cable like

Three's Company

I see what you mean. I am sure that the syndicated episodes on cable have a lot to do with how much action this page is getting. On a side-note, I would like to mention the fact that you brought up "Three's Company". I remember when a lot of the episodes of this series were uploaded onto Youtube. Now the vast majority of what was there is gone! I find it amazing what manages to stay up there and what does not. It seem that, the vast majority of the time that things pertaining to "Gimme a Break!" that go up there stay up. Any thoughts as to why this is?
