by Michael Ausiello
3/21/13

Marking his first half-hour sitcom appearance in nearly a decade, comedy legend Bob Newhart will guest star on "The Big Bang Theory" this May, TVLine has learned exclusively.

The six-time Emmy nominated star of "The Bob Newhart Show" and "Newhart "will play “Professor Proton,” the former host of Sheldon’s favorite science show as a kid.

(We will come to learn that the Professor played a big part in the childhoods of both Sheldon and Leonard)

According to a BBT source, Sheldon tracks his idol down online and discovers that he can be hired out for parties and events. Naturally, Sheldon books him to come to their house.

The episode is slated to air on Thursday, May 2.

Glad to see Bob back on a sitcom. He has done some drama episodes over the years, but not much comedy recently.

Newhart is an absolute comic trooper.Everytime just when you think you might have seen him making an appearance on tv or in film for the last time,BOOM!There he is again in all of his sidesplitting entertainment glory!Reminds me of when he turned up in,of all places, the Will Ferrell movie "Elf".

Keck's Exclusives First Look: Bob Newhart on "The Big Bang Theory"
Apr 15, 2013
by William Keck

Bob Newhart, 83, often turns down requests to guest star on sitcoms, so kudos to CBS's "The Big Bang Theory" for landing him on its May 2 episode.

Exec producer Chuck Lorre asked him what it would take to do one of his shows and, Newhart says, "I specified Big Bang because of the writing and the live audience."

He plays Professor Proton, the former host of a kiddie science show.

"Sheldon and Leonard watched it religiously, and it influenced them to go into science," Newhart says. "When they find out he's doing appearances, they book an appointment."

Tailored to Newhart's dry wit, the professor is incredulous of the adoration but plays along for the payday. And he may be back.

The last scene "sets it up for me to return a couple more times next season."

Can't wait to see Newhart mingle with "The Big Bang" crowd with his comical stutter.

I know Marcia Wallace has been very busy for the last 20+ years doing the voice of Bart Simpson's school teacher on "The Simpsons".I haven't heard anything from Bill Daly.
