I'm planning on making a top-16 list and I was wondering...which sitcom characters are the biggest jerks?

All I can think of is Barney Stitson.

Det. Stanley "Wojo" Wojciehowicz (Barney Miller) was a definite male chauvinist pig at the outset of the show, condemning hookers while he slept with anything that moved. He was also a definite homophobic. He did slowly start to become more accepting of hookers, gays, etc. as the show went on, and by the time the final episode of the show aired in 1982 after an eight season run, Det. Harris refered to Wojo as "much improved".

Also, Larry Tate (Bewitched) was greedy, miserly, pushy and had no problem firing (ultimately to rehire) Darrin, prying into Darrin's personal life and all sorts of things that would definitely breach the lines of professional etiquette for a boss/employee relationship.

Lex Luthor (from "The New Adventures of Superman", "Super Friends", "Superman" [1988 cartoon series], "Superboy", "Lois & Clark: The New Adventures of Superman", "Smallville", and "Justice League" and other places)

Dr. Doom (from "Sub-Mariner", "The Fantastic Four" [1960s cartoon], "The New Fantastic Four", "Spider-Man" [1981 cartoon], "Spider-Man and his Amazing Friends", "The Fantastic Four" [1990s cartoon], "The Incredible Hulk" [1990s cartoon], "Spider-Man" [1990s cartoon], "Fantastic Four: World's Greatest Heroes", "The Superhero Squad Show", "Iron Man: Armored Adventures", "The Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes", "Ultimate Spider-Man" and other places)

Yeah- these guys are kind of jerks, to say the least.;)

(Okay- and I just saw that this list is really for sitcom characters, so sorry about that- but these guys definitely fit the qualification otherwise.)

Eddie Haskell from "Leave It to Beaver" seems a good candidate....
and
much as I enjoy his character, Dr. Sheldon Cooper from "The Big Bang Theory" would also fit this list.

I actually call him Randy "The Smartass" Taylor.

Or what about his dad Tim? One of the all-time biggest jerks in sitcom history, along with these men that I know he'd be proud of:

Dr Jason Seaver - Growing Pains Played by Alan Thicke. Need I say more?

The men on Full House. The original Two and a Half Men with half a brain between them.

Peter Griffin - Family Guy - The current sitcom champion of all male jerks.

Michael Scott - The Office - Played by Steve Carell, who tends to play a variation of this role in each of his movies, all of which suck badly.

And now a few jerks from the past:

MASH - Dr. Charles Winchester, Dr Frank Burns, Dr Henry Blake, Dr Sherman Potter - a virtual Hall Of Fame.

I Dream Of Jeannie - Dr Bellows - I loved it when he thought he was going crazy. Served him right from for being a snoop.

Mr Mooney - The Lucy Show - Perpetually grumpy and cheap. The kind of man who would get thrown out of a bar just before Happy Hour starts.

Sgt. Carter (Gomer Pyle)/Col. Klink (Hogan's Heroes)/Col. Hall (The Phil Silvers Show) - Three soldiers who make me glad that I never joined the Army. Yet they pale compared to:

Capt. Wallace B Binghamton - McHale's Navy - "I could just scream!" ...and laugh...and laugh...

Someone mentioned Eddie Haskell who would be near the top of any list but how about Fred Rutherford, played by Richard Deacon, who also gave us another great candidate, Mel Cooley, the long-suffering employee of yet another champion jerk, Alan Brady.

Another great answer that was given earlier was Larry Tate, but don't forget, Bewitched also had Dr Bombay, Uncle Arthur, Samantha's dad Maurice, and sometimes, even Darrin himself would turn into a jerk, and without any magic.

Other evil spirits from the past:

Mr Slate - The Flintstones

Mr Spacely - The Jetsons

Milburn Drysdale - The Beverly Hillbillies

Mr Haney - Green Acres

Homer Bedloe - Petticoat Junction

(not to be confused with Homer Simpson, who shouldn't be on this list, but Mr Burns definitely does!

Howard Sprague - The Andy Griffith Show/Mayberry RFD The only man on this list who appeared as a minor character on two sitcoms. You can't do much better, or badder, than that.

Why would Dr. Jason Seaver, Danny Tanner, Uncle Jesse Katsopolis and Joey Gladstone be on this list?
They may all have had moments of being jerks at times on their respective shows, but I don't know that any of them were consistently portrayed as jerks. (Of course, I love "Growing Pains" and "Full House" and grew up watching both, so that may color my view of these characters.)
(Of course, I daresay almost every character mentioned on here, while mainly known for their gruffiness, unfriendliness, rudeness and grouchiness- i.e. "jerk"-iness - at times have their moments where they really show they do have a heart.)
Even Oscar the Grouch has his moments on Sesame Street.:)

Jerry,George,Elaine, and especially Cosmo Kramer are all beyond jerks. They're downright SOCIOPATHIC!Remember the last episode when the group was arrested for making fun of an assault victim instead of being at his aid and then when they went to court, all the people that they acted highly indecent towards throughout the series served as character witnesses to the end of proving they were all detriments to decent society?Throughout the show, they each displayed many aspects of the sociopathic personality.George Costanza is a pathological liar, both Elaine and Jerry have scores of little nicknames to people that they decided for some reason or another are not proper enough to serve well in what they see as a perfect society, and where do I even begin with Kramer! They manipulated, scorned, and mocked just about everyone they crossed paths with!

Great list. I agree Major Winchester was a jerk but there were times he did good and there was more depth in him and I rooted for him sometimes. You couldn't get that with Frank Burns who was a cartoon and I'm glad that he left.

I really can't see Dr. Jason Seaver in this list. I don't know that he had that much sudden anger issues. If he got upset in the pilot episode, it's probably because Mike had just been arrested. I would think any parent would get pretty upset at their children in such a situation. As I said before, perhaps Dr. Seaver does struggle with some anger at times- but this is part of his character, and yes- one of his flaws. But even the flaws are part of what makes the character- it is one of the things we relate to because we struggle with anger too. And it would make for dull characters if they didn't have something to struggle with. However, I think the difference here is consistency. Some characters consistently seem to be jerks in every episode. I don't think Jason Seaver is anywhere near that.
Anyway, that's just my opinion on it. Of course, I am also a big fan of "Growing Pains" so that may color my opinion of course. And of course, people are free to differ and that's okay.

Homer and Bart Simpson

Homer used to be a great character but now has morphed into a monster. I'm glad that Ned finally punched after years of abuse.

Bart has also done horrible things. Almost letting Homer die during an experiment. Homer was hanging from a tree and Bart had to save him. After being a complete jerk the shrink started choking Bart and Bart finally cutted the rope to save Homer. Still, Bart almost killed Homer.

I made a list of cartoons who won't fit-in the real world, Homer Simpson wasn't on there, but he'd be #17 on the list for being a dumbass and trying to kill Bart Simpson by strangling him!

And ny next list will be about male cartoon jerks, and yes...Bart Simpson is on that list!
