View Full Version : No Season 5 Yet...I'm Getting Worried
Kasey 03-13-2013, 02:22 PM Well it seems like most all of the Sony titles that Shout Factory had licensed (Police Woman, The Rookies, Fantasy Island) are no longer in the works for release as stated on their Facebook page. When asked about a possible release date for S5, the reply was "no date at this time". I hope this doesn't mean Sony has packed up all their shows and took leave of Shout. I really wanted to complete the series.
tlc38tlc38 03-13-2013, 02:52 PM I could be wrong but something tells me we'll see season 5 by the end of the year. Recently, companies have been just announcing the release date only about 2 or 3 months before the release. They used to announce it sometimes 6 months ahead of time. Now it's almost announce it one day and before you know it you've got it in your hands.
1960'sTVfan 03-14-2013, 09:14 AM Maybe they are working on some special features for the 5th season DVD, that might be why there hasn't been an announcement yet. There is also a chance the 5th season won't be released due to poor sales for previous seasons. How long a wait has it been for the 3rd and final season of Flying Nun to be out on DVD, 6 or 7 years? That's ridiculous. Hopefully, Hazel won't be another show that gets abandoned on DVD with one season to go.

Several people have said that they would not buy season 5 of Hazel if it were offered. My opinion is that, while season 5 may not be quite as good as the initial seasons, it still was a fun show with an attractive cast. Ray Fulmer looked like one of those who could have been in the running to replace Dick York on Bewitched. In addition, season 5 was shown on CBS rather than NBC and that may have something to do with a different contract negotiation for the DVD rights.

All 5 seasons are property of Sony regardless of the fact that Hazel aired on 2 different networks. My concern is that Sony has fractured ties with Shout Factory as Sony have begun to release certain shows on their own in MOD format such as Bridget Loves Bernie, Charlie's Angels S5 and Fantasy Island. This is not to say they will do the same for Hazel; I was just hoping Shout would finish the series completely since it seemed to be a good seller for them. Now it may be another case of 'stalled-with-1-season-left'.

Good point. Hopefully Sony will not do what Fox did with Shout. After releasing two sets of Peyton Place, that series stalled when Fox began asking higher prices for the rights to release future sets. Also I understand Fox is responsible for the season 6 episodes of Mister Ed not being released. Those 13 final episodes would have finished that series as well. As to extras on season 5, I remember a lot of promos in the late summer of 1965 on CBS: "Hazel is moving!" which could be included. Other promos I remember are 2 b/w promos from the first season which WGN ran in the late 60s to promote the first syndication package, and there are two Ford commercials on YouTube, one has Hazel hawking the '64 Falcon and the other with the entire cast promoting the debut of the Mustang. (That one was posted by Don DeFore's son Ron.)

1960'sTVfan 03-20-2013, 11:20 AM Until the 5th season DVD comes out, if it ever comes to pass, I have the 5th season episodes recorded from TV. The episodes are edited, but at this point it's better than nothing. Same thing with the 3rd season of Flying Nun, I also have those episodes recorded from TV, in edited form.

You're lucky--I don't get Antenna TV, MeTV and the like so if S5 isn't released officially, I guess I will have to check out i-Offer but I'm sure hoping I won't need to.
CelticJobber 06-09-2013, 06:16 AM At this point, it seems like a pretty safe bet that we'll never see a DVD release for Hazel season 5. But I hope I'm wrong. :(

I am not sure that Shout Factory is still doing business with Sony. Shout have stated they have no plans to release any more of the '70s cop shows (The Rookies, Police Woman, Police Story, due to poor sales.) When asked, they also said there were no plans for more Diff'rent Strokes and their license has expired for The Facts of Life (on which they LOST money on Season 5). I know Hazel was a pretty good seller for them, hence three seasons out in 2012, but it may be over. The only hope may be Sony making it available as a MOD release, but there would have to be some public outcry from fans (on Facebook, etc.) to get them to consider doing that. If not, I will just look for a bootleg set.
McGillicuddy 06-09-2013, 01:36 PM Maybe it will be released as a Shout! Select item.

Shout doesn't seem to put much effort into their Select program. Maybe you're right but I don't have much faith in them for that.
McGillicuddy 06-09-2013, 07:43 PM Here is the release schedule for That Girl released between 2006-09, by Shout!, another '60's show with 5 seasons.
There was a whole year between seasons 3 & 4, and 9 months between 4 & 5.
Season 1 - May 16, 2006
Season 2 - November 14, 2006
Season 3 - August 7, 2007
Season 4 - August 12, 2008
Season 5 - May 5, 2009
It's only been 7 monthes since the last release of Hazel, and I strongly believe Hazel season 5 will still be released in August or November of this year.
tlc38tlc38 06-09-2013, 09:26 PM It was August '12 when I received an email alert from tvshowsondvd.com about season 4 getting released. I think we'll get word about season 5 in August or September of this year for a November/December. I'm not giving up just yet.
1960'sTVfan 08-07-2013, 04:31 PM Like all Hazel fans, I also hope the 5th season will come out on DVD. But until there's an official announcement from the studio including a release date, I'm going with the belief the series is abandoned and the 5th season will be unreleased. Seems to me that Shout Factory is pursuing other interests and the 5th season of Hazel is not high on their list of priorities.

What irks me is that Shout was supposed to begin releasing HAZEL in 2011 but put it on the backburner and started cranking out DENNIS THE MENACE instead when their relationship with Sony was still going strong. Had they released HAZEL first as planned, we could have had Seasons 2-5 out in the time they released 4 seasons of DENNIS.

I believe Shout Factory wanted to release Dennis The Menace on the heels of the successful Leave It To Beaver release. From a marketing viewpoint, it made sense, so Hazel was put on the backburner temporarily. Sales of Hazel seasons 2 thru 4 have likely come in below expectations, causing Shout Factory to lose interest in releasing the final season. Shout Factory has a history of abandoning shows and not releasing all the seasons. Room 222 was stopped after 2 seasons, same with Marcus Welby, and the last season of Mister Ed hasn't been released. I'm not giving up hope yet on the 5th season of Hazel, but right now it isn't looking good.

Sales for Seasons 2 and 3 were pretty strong for HAZEL; Season 4 I don't know. I wonder if anyone has been recording the S5 eps from Antenna TV.

I recorded them, the episodes are edited but at this point I guess it's better than nothing. I think there is one season 5 episode that Antenna TV aired uncut, if I recall correctly, it's the episode Hazel's Endearing Young Charms that was aired uncut. I also have the 5th season episode A Little Bit Of Genius transferred from film with original commercials.
Vahan 08-11-2013, 10:03 AM Room 222 and Mister Ed stopped because of disputes between Shout and Fox.
Fox hates Shout, and Shout hates them back.

I guess they are very busy prepping all 325 (!) episodes of Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman as well as other things. HAZEL got put on the backburner for now but at least it's coming.
Kasey 09-19-2013, 12:47 PM Awhile ago, when it looked like the series was being abandoned, I began desigining my own cover art for Season Five in case I found someone who recorded all the episodes from Antenna-TV. I never did finish it, but I'm glad we will be getting an official release.

Worry no more!!!!!

I like your cover art better than what they're using. And they are calling it the final season instead of the fifth season!
Hazel Anyday 10-03-2013, 08:59 PM I agree, your created cover art looks much better than the cover Shout is supposedly going to use. Your cover, the picture is bright, clean and clear and it features the whole new Baxter family (could that be the reason Shout doesn't want to use it?). The cover they are supposed to be using (who knows, these things could change between now and January) shows Hazel (alone) looking very old and tired looking. I almost think it's a picture of Shirley Booth from "A Touch of Grace" with her hair colored red in the picture. I am pleased as punch to be finally getting Season 5 uncut, make no mistake, but as far as the cover goes, I think Shout ought to use the one you have created. Final word, THANK YOU Shout for releasing Season 5, you're my hero.
1960'sTVfan 10-03-2013, 11:56 PM That's good to know a release date for season 5 has been announced. Hopefully all the episodes will be uncut this time, both season 3 and 4 have hiccups with a couple edited episodes. Season 3's "Everybody's A Comedian" and "Campaign Manager" are edited. Season 4's "It's A Dog's Life" is also edited.

I have said this before: Shout Factory just can't put in season numbers on their "final season" TV show DVDs. What is wrong with Shout Factory? It's rather insensitive and deplorable.

Thanks for your kind words. I have also been a little peeved that the person creating all the Hazel cover art must not be a fan since they always colorized Hazel's uniform PINK on every release when we all know it was light blue! Either way, I'm thrilled she's finally gonna be complete!
