One by one by one by one the sitcoms stars of the 70's are leaving us. It's so very sad.

I recently rewatched the first two seasons of TMTMS (on DVD's checked out from the Library). I was reminded of how the Rhoda character was so vital to the show. And not just because of how the role was written but because of Valerie's performance in the role. My thoughts and prayers are with her.

Take a moment to watch this clip, from January 21, 2013

This is just a few days after Valerie's reported diagnosis. Notice that when Mary mentions "doing well" and the book tour Valerie becomes very emotional.

Such a sad situation... I hope her days are filled with great things.

I know...and this year and a half has been especially bad. I grew up with many of these people through reruns, first-runs, then later DVDs, and I always thought they'd be around forever and I'd always have a safe spot in the world. Which we are in DESPERATE need of in these times. It's sobering when reality wakes us up.

P.S. I ask again, is there a way to write her? I am begging...

I can try to locate one for you. Are you wanting to send her a card?

First Bonnie Franklin and now Valerie. It's true. Most of the tv stars that I grew up with are dying. :( I'm very sorry to hear about Valerie. My prayers are with her. :(

Stars React to Valerie Harper's Cancer Diagnosis

Following the news today that Valerie Harper was diagnosed with terminal brain cancer, actor Jason Bateman and other stars have spoken out with personal messages of support.

"Valerie is someone that I've learned a great deal from. Not just comedically, but also in her ability to put whomever approached her, or worked with her, completely at ease with a laugh, and an energy that's intoxicating," Bateman told ET in a statement. "My thoughts and love go out to her and her family," added the Identity Thief star, who played Harper's son on the 1980s sitcom Valerie.

r

Also reacting to the news was Ed Asner, who co-starred with Harper, 73, in the 1970s sitcom The Mary Tyler Moore Show. "Valerie Harper is a century plan and I have come to know her much better in my latter years and have every confidence in the world that she will shock the hell out of us and survive to keep functioning as the great talent and human that she is," he told ET.

Hot in Cleveland star Betty White also reacted with her own heartfelt message to Harper, who co-starred with White on The Mary Tyler Moore Show. "Here I go wheezing on at 91 years old and this beautiful, beautiful lady is facing something far too soon. We all love her so much, and we are going to make the most of every second we can," White said.

TV icon Mary Tyler Moore also weighed in on Harper's diagnosis, saying she was "devastated" by the shocking news. "Valerie has given so much joy, laughter and love to the world. I join her fans and send much love and positive thoughts to her and her family during this difficult time," Moore said.

The 76-year-old actress -- who herself underwent surgery in 2011 for a benign tumor in her head -- lauded her Mary Tyler Moore Show co-star and friend. "Valerie has given so much joy, laughter and love to the world," Moore said, according to a statement published by People.com. "I join her fans and send much love and positive thoughts to her and her family during this difficult time."

One day before going public with her diagnosis in People, Harper called Moore to share the news. After small talk, "She said, 'What's up?'" Harper told the magazine. "I said, 'It's incurable cancer.' She said, 'Val, I'm so sorry.'"

This news just breaks my heart. I've been entertained by Valerie Harper for over 40 years and she's always been so vibrant, the thought of losing her never occurred to me. This should be a reminder to us all that what you see on the outside does not necessarily reflect what's going on on the inside. Valerie Harper has always looked fantastic, even now. But that beautiful outward appearance belies what's been happening inside her body. No matter how wonderful and healthy you may look, you still need to go to the doctor. That's not to say she wasn't doing that; I'm just saying we need to always make our best effort to know what's happening inside and outside of our bodies. It's awful to lose people we care about too soon, and it's certainly too soon to not have this beautiful woman in our world.

My thoughts and prayers go out to Valerie and her family.

Her talent and personality helped make The Mary Tyler Moore Show the great sitcom that it was, and she is truly a special person.

Let's hope Ed Asner's scenario comes true.

Read post #11 again, Ed Asner's comment should be self-explanatory.

HuntingtonM15,
If you are able to find a way of writing to her, would you kindly post it here?

My sister, my brother-in-law, and I were fortunate enough to actually meet Valerie at a convention a few monhs ago. And I would like to tell her, not only that she has our prayers and best wishes at this difficult time, but also how much we enjoyed meeting her, how much we appreciate how kind she was to us, and what long-time fans we are.

Thank you very much!

Later,
Art

It appears that I fail as a moderator, for not even thinking to post something about this here! *smacks forehead* But hopefully I can blame it on the fact that my heart's been ripped out by this news. I, too, had the great pleasure of meeting her (three times!!!). So this hits me rather personally. I had hoped to see her again on this book tour, but alas, I don't think that's in the cards now.

To those wondering about an address to write to, if you're on Twitter, I suggest sending a tweet to @4everRob. He is her manager, and he told me (via DM) where I could send a card. I don't know if it's meant to be public, though. I just thought I'd pass that info along!

At any rate, all my love and prayers go to Valerie. It's just so horrible and unfair. :( I have to admit, I've always been more concerned w/ Mary's health for obvious reasons, so this has blindsided me!

Edit:Thanks, Leigh Ann, for having my back as the co-mod & posting this thread!

Valerie has awesome people! That's what makes me love the people associated with MTM so much - they've always seemed down to earth and they've always been a truly good group of people. Not smoking, drinking, doing drugs, etc. which is sadly such a rarity in showbiz! We need more people like Valerie around, that's for sure. :)

Such amazing news...

Valerie Harper Cancer-Free (http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20807434,00.html?xid=rss-topheadlines)

Valerie Harper's inspiring battle against terminal brain cancer may now have a miraculous ending: The actress has revealed she is "absolutely cancer-free."

"My last scans have been positive, and my doctors are very happy," the 74-year-old Rhoda star told Closer Weekly. "[The oncologist] looked at the scans and said, 'Oh, my God, Valerie, this is very encouraging.' "

Harper, who defied initial predictions that she only had months to live and inspired millions of viewers by appearing on Dancing with the Stars, says her doctor still doesn't use the term "in remission."

"He likes to say, 'I give you a treatment, and it's either responsive or nonresponsive, and you are having a phenomenal response."

Harper's ongoing medical treatment includes a "pulse dose" – which involves taking a lot of pills at one time, something Harper admits can be "difficult" – and now seeing her doctor once every eight weeks.

"There may come a time when I'm not feeling good," Harper said. "But then again, that time may never come!"

The actress is currently in New York doing press for her episodes of Martha Williamson's new series for Hallmark Channel, Signed, Sealed, Delivered.

I saw an interview about a week ago where she clarified that reports that she is "cancer free" are in accurate. She is in remission, but that doesn't mean cancer free. Still, it's very, very encouraging news.
