...I can't believe I actually created an account just to post this, but, here I am. As a 47 year old fan of vintage TV and Bewitched, I was reading up on Dick York, stumbled on some old threads on this site, and saw at least one poster pretty consistantly try to disqualify anyone's opinion that Dick York was the best Darrin, as being valid. God rest all these great actors and actresses from the show, but Dick York "was" Darrin, to me and many others (this is to get a point across, not some sort of confusion that the actor and character were one in the same). What a show, and what an unbelievably colorful cast of characters and wonderful actors and actresses.
As previously mentioned, I happened to view an old thread that, like so many online threads, apparently turned into an argument. I have no interest in arguing, and this is not about criticizing Dick Sargeant.
Bewitched is one reunion show, that never even could have happened due to untimely passings, but that would have been great to see. Even "I" would have enjoyed having the plot revolve around "two" Darrins, utilizing both actors. I get all sentimental every time I see that Bewitched house used on yet another new commercial (The Fruit of the Loom Christmas commercial from a few years back and a more recent car (?) commercial come to mind).

...ironically, one of my favorite episodes is when Sam and Uncle Arthur have to get jobs, which is minus York. However, the one where York, Lynde and Montgomery's characters voices gets switched is my all time favorite. Cracks me up, even thinking about it. :) God Bless all of those people.

...York looked absolutely frantic in that one, and though I realize voices were dubbed later, they all seemed to be having fun, as though they were experiencing the voice changes right then and there. Lynde, in particular seemed to be having a ball. That episode, alone, to me, should have won an Emmy.

The name of that ep is "Samantha Loses Her Voice", and it originally aired December 5, 1968. EM, DY and AM were ALL robbed at the Emmys. They all should have won at least one. My personal fave DY episode was when Endora split Darrin's work side and fun side (S2, "Divided He Falls") - hilarity galore!!! :lol:

...indeed. To see these actors and actresses in other, more tame roles, shows just how good they were on Bewitched. AM was astounding in the color she added to her character. And all such great old character actors guest starred, especially that guy who lived to be over 100 and died only a few years ago (bald, glasses, and always played an older looking boss. He was on many old TV shows, and dang it...the name escapes me). He was in the Christmas ep, and guested as a lawyer on The Munsters when an invention of Grampa's made two women lose their hair. They walked into his office, beautifully dressed but totally bald. He tried to act politely, but forgot himself saying, "Cigars gentleman?" Cracks me up, no end.

I believe you are thinking of Charles Lane. He was actually in one of my all-time favorite episodes of the show, "Speak the Truth" from S2. That's the one with the truth god. That's one of those episodes that's much funnier when you watch it with a bunch of people than by yourself. I know from experience...I watched it with a bunch of friends and we laughed ourselves silly. :rofl:

...that's him! Hadn't seen him in years, and then, around '91, saw him in an epsiode of the new Dark Shadows TV show. I was like, "It's him!!" Years later, I was surprised and delighted to hear he was still around. At one point, I even had his autograph from someone.
As for Speak the Truth, HOW Could I forget. I LOVE that one, and every time someone tells me how funny they think the movie Liar, Liar is, I'm like, "PLEASE! Watch this episode from Bewitched, and see how it's really done". I must admit, I haven't caught Bewitched in a while (until recently), but know they remade that one with, I believe, Sargeant.

He was THE quintessential character actor. He was in everything. What was really great was when TV Land honored him on his 100th birthday. I actually wrote to him and he autographed my index card for me. The timing was just right, as he passed not long after.

I agree that Dick York WAS Darren. He had so much better on sreen chemistry with Elizabeth Montgomery than Dick Sargeant did!

...That is just priceless. And my goodness, why "didn't" he get used more, if in fact he was willing and available! Sharp as a tack, even at 100. Thanks for the info.
