RIP :(

Bonnie Franklin, best known for a playing single mom to two teenage daughters on the long-running CBS sitcom One Day At A Time, died this morning. She was 69. The actress and singer, who worked on stage, film and TV (she made her TV debut at age 9 on the Colgate Comedy Hour) and also directed several TV episodes during her career, disclosed last fall that she had pancreatic cancer. Born in Santa Monica, Franklin guest starred on several series and TV movies in the 1970s, and scored a Tony nomination in 1970 for starring in the musical Applause. In 1975 she landed the lead role of Ann Romano on the Norman Lear-developed sitcom One Day At A Time, starring alongside Valerie Bertinelli and Mackenzie Phillips as her daughters and Pat Harrington as their wisecracking super. The series ran from 1975-1984 and tackled several social issues like teen pregnancy as it humorously charted a single mom’s struggles raising two kids. Franklin was nominated for an Emmy and two Golden Globes for the role. She starred in several TV movies during that stretch, including as women’s health activist Margaret Sanger in 1980′s Portrait Of A Rebel: The Remarkable Mrs. Sanger. That year she married producer Marvin Minoff, and they were together for 29 years until his death in November 2009.

Franklin later traveled with her own cabaret show and worked extensively in regional and educational theatre, founding the nonprofit Classic and Contemporary American Plays, which aims to introduce and implement great American plays into inner city schools’ curriculum.

One of her most recent TV roles reunited her with Bertinelli for a guest stint on TV Land’s Hot In Cleveland in 2011.

I have very fond memories of watching "One Day At A Time" regularly in the same lineup with "Alice","The Jeffersons" and "Archie Bunker's Place".She was indeed a highly talented as well as skilled and thoroughly true professional.

She also appeared on The Young and The Restless at the end of last year in a s/l involving Victor Newman. I forgot she was ill. She actually did very well on the show. I was never a fan of this sitcom.

What a shame. I still haven't even seen this show and I want to see it so bad. Hopefully this will get Antenna TV to start showing it or Shout to pickup the DVD releases. Nearly all the main stars of Norman Lear's shows are gone, but he is still going at 90. It's amazing Carroll O'Connor, Redd Foxx, Bea Arthur, Rue McClanahan, Conrad Bain, Esther Rolle, Isabel Sanford, Sherman Hemsley, and now Bonnie Franklin, are all gone, but Norman Lear is still living and he is much older than most of them were.

R.I.P Bonnie Franklin (Ann Romano). I used to watch One Day at a Time as a kid, growing up my family was similiar to the family on One Day At a Time except we were 2 boys and a single Mom. She will be remembered.

Bonnie through the years...the last two photos are of her with her husband, Marvin Minoff. They wed in 1980 and were still married at the time of his passing in 2009.

I watched the premiere episode of ODAAT and followed it for years, up until the early 80's and the departure of Mackenzie Phillips. Didn't watch much after that, but the show will live in my memory forever as an example of entertaining TV that can enlighten as well. It would never have worked without Franklin, IMHO.

:rip: Bonnie.

It's kind of bitter-sweet that Bonnie and Valerie were reunited one last time on Hot In Cleveland in 2011, and also with Mackenzie and Pat when they were honered at The TVLand Awards!

I am sorry to hear that. I use to love One Day at a Time. It was always syndicated in the 80s. Some network need to pick this show up again.

My heart is breaking. Bonnie has always been one of the most important women in my life and was a second mother to me. The years on “One Day At A Time” were some of the happiest of my life, and along with Pat and Mackenzie we were a family in every way. She taught me how to navigate this business and life itself with grace and humor, and to always be true to yourself. I will miss her terribly.

Pav, have you heard anything about a possible Bonnie Franklin marathon? Kind of tricky, since neither TV Land, Antenna TV nor Me-TV carry it (at least not in all areas) - but I hope someone does some kind of a tribute to her.

This is very sad news. I watched the show during it's original run from 1975 until 1984. It was one of my favorite shows and Bonnie was the glue that held it all together. She was a real pioneer in television. There really wasn't many tv shows with divorced women at that time and none that I know of that showed her raising 2 teenage daughters. I wish somebody would show ODAAT again. I haven't seen it in almost a decade when it was on Comcast On-Demand. I think it still holds up. Bonnie deserves to be remembered. R.I.P. Bonnie. Thanks for the memories. :(

I watched the show in reruns and there was an 80's TV movie where she played a streetwise nun which was good too. I had no idea she was sick. RIP.

Valerie Bertinelli & Mackenzie Phillips Remember Bonnie Franklin

Bonnie Franklin’s TV family is mourning the loss of one of America’s favorite sitcom stars — Bonnie Fanklin.

The 69-year-old, who was a Tony Award nominee and played a single mom on One Day at a Time, died Friday of complications from pancreatic cancer.

One of her TV daughters, Valerie Bertinelli, released a photo with this statement:

“My heart is breaking. Bonnie has always been one of the most important women in my life and was a second mother to me. The years on One Day at a Time were some of the happiest of my life, and along with Pat [Harrington Jr.] and Mackenzie [Phillips] we were a family in every way. She taught me how to navigate this business and life itself with grace and humor, and to always be true to yourself. I will miss her terribly.”

Mackensie Phillips, said, “I am so saddened by the loss of our dear friend. She was just full of light and love. Bonnie will be very much missed by all the people she touched … We all loved her very much.”

Fellow 70s sitcom star Suzanne Somers added, “My first appearance ver on a sitcom was on One Day At A Time. I was very nervous and Bonnie Franklin was very gracious and kind. She was very involved in notes and creativity and I watched with awe. Her passing is way too soon. RIP. You will be missed.”

CBS released a statement saying, “Ms. Franklin helped define and illuminate the role of single-working mothers within the cultural landscape.”

I was saddened to see this. I was hoping she was beating this disease. R.I.P. Ms. Franklin.

Sadly, pancreatic cancer is 100% fatal. I once had a conversation with a endocrinologist (sic?) whose specialty is the pancreas. One cannot recieve a new pancreas.

It's not 100% fatal, if it were then it would mean that nobody has ever survived it and that simply isn't true. With early detection it is very possible to beat the disease. Ruth Bader Ginsburg is just one example.

Fellow 70s sitcom star Suzanne Somers added, “My first appearance ever on a sitcom was on One Day At A Time.”

That's not possible. She appeared on Lotsa Luck, which was cancelled before One Day At A Time premiered.

TV Land should have aired One Day at a Time after Hot in Cleveland became a hit. They could have made it a hit and exposed it to fans of Valerie Bertinelli who hadn't seen ODAAT, but the idiots in charge over there would rather show reruns of shows like King of Queens and Raymond that have been rerun to death over the past several years.

Maybe TV Land could rerun Bonnie's episode of HiC. At least that would be a little something.

Yea I agree. I don't even watch those shows. I wasn't even a big fan of them when they originally aired.

OH Nuts!

I posted on the other thread honoring Bonnie. I watched One Day At A Time when it originally aired and enjoyed it very much. Like others said, Bonnie was the glue. I'm also glad I have the ep where she guested on Hot In Cleveland. I'll treasure that ep. May Bonnie rest in peace. A fine actress.

I hope this isn't inappropriate or too intrusive to ask, but was Bonnie Franklin a heavy drinker and smoker? Michael Landon and Patrick Swayze also succumbed to pancreatic cancer (http://www.mirrorathlete.com/2017/08/18/mae-health-blog-is-pancreatic-cancer-on-the-rise-part-1/) and their heavy drinking and smoking habits more than likely contributed to them getting the disease.
