I found this article below about schools stopping to teach cursive writting, I think this is such a huge mistake!!!

How do you feel about it?

I think as long as schools continue to teach handwriting, I have no problem with it. I learned to write cursive in second grade. We we required to write in cursive in 3rd-6th grade, but by junior high, it was abandoned. By the time I got to college (and in much of my high school courses), we typed everything. Some might find cursive nostalgic. I know older generations used it throughout the entire life, but that simply isn't the case anymore. Class time could be better spent teach students skills that they will actually use later in life.

Just saying we (around here) always called it "script". I don't recall anybody ever saying "cursive".

Must be a regional thing, we always called it cursive.

I HAVE heard it called script, but around here in the South it's called cursive mostly.

But I'd rather write cursive/script than to print. I can write faster.

I never understood why most of my classmates hated it, they would all ratehr print.

I know in Washington state and Texas it's called cursive. I think it's important that children learn how to write in print and cursive.

Hey, that article is about my state. :) I can tell you they did decide NOT to eliminate cursive handwriting from the curriculum. It was decided that while technology is an important form of communication that should be taught to students, handwriting is a critical component when it comes to building cognitive skills. It was decided that instead of creating specific, tested standards on cursive writing, that it would be encouraged for teachers to incorporate the teaching of handwriting into other subject areas. So, students will be taught to write in cursive, but they will not be tested on their ability to do so. Right now handwriting doesn't even have a grade on the report cards in my district, but we do teach it everyday.

I still write in cursive everyday and I think students should learn it. That is my personal opinion on the matter. :)

I totally agree, I would not like living in a paperless world.

I think we are on the track to paperless. I havent written in cursive since the 2nd grade. I rarely handwrite anything anymore except to sign my name or write an occasional check

Since using computers and typing everything my cursive handwriting has become terrible due to lack of use. I don't hand write letters anymore andI don't write many checks because I do almost all of my banking and shopping online. I think that teaching cursive should be continued as I believe it helps a child's fine motor skills. Pretty soon they will want to stop teaching reading and math because of electronic books and calculators. If they keep it up we won't be able to do anything physically except push a few buttons.

Cursive is a waste of time. In elementary school they said we'd use it all the time - and I never did. The only thing they should teach is how to write your name so you can do a signature when you're older. Other than that, ditch cursive.

OMG I totally disagree with these last comment, if a disaster hits us that knocks out the computers for any lenth of time, we are gonna be so non prepaired.

We are becoming more and more vulnerable! Well I'M not, but most ppl are.

But I will be in a mess too b/c all the resouces will be GONE.

If the computer shuts down our world will shut down and that is NOT a good thing.

I just dont' see how it's a good thing for kids not to even know how to write.

Of course children should learn cursive writing. I don't write cursive myself much anymore because since using computers the last couple of decades, my penmanship isn't what it used to be. My printing just looks better. Still, I'm glad I learned it.

I can't believe all these ppl who feel like that.

That's how it was when I was in school, everyone always wanted to print and hated when the teacher made us write in cursive, BUT I always prefered to write in cursive than to print, it was just FASTER to me.

of course they should keep it - if they don't learn to write cursive, they won't learn to read it, and if they finish school without being able to read and write what the heck is the point?

i don't think that it is important that they get graded on it, but i do think that learning cursive and the specific hand-eye co-ordination that it teaches is very important for development.

We're not talking about getting rid of handwriting altogether, just cursive. When was the last time you had to read something that was written in cursive?

I read things written in cursive all the time. Anytime someone writes me a note it is in cursive. Holiday cards are written in cursive. Postcards when people go on vacation. I have noticed I read handwritten things less often though than I did in the past and I find it harder and harder to read various handwriting than I used to. I think it is because we don't read handwritten things as much as we did in the past.

I still think kids should learn cursive. For one thing, it is exciting to most of them. It makes them feel very grown up and proud to be old enough to learn it. When I used to teach 2nd grade, the kids would get so excited in January when we would switch from manuscript to cursive. You'd think it was the highlight of the school year. :)

I TOTALLY agree!!!

It was fun for me to learn cursive, it made me feel grown up, I also felt the same way learning Roman numerals lol, but sadly things like that are quickly being LOST nowdays, simples things that ppl and kids used to have fun doing and get kinda excited about are so rapidly being lost.

And I read a LOT of things in cursive also, my familys till writes letters. Just b/c the MASS doesn't do something as much anymore doesn't mean the minority should be deprived of it if thats how we still enjoy doing it.

But sadly nowdays everything is geared toward the masses.

I found that out about a year ago when I was trying to get an international money order, BOY did I find that out!!! Our POST OFFICE didn't even have them.

I have heard that a lot of older ppl have forgotten how to print and can only write cursive.

My grandma can't print.

I can, but it's actually harder for me to print, my print always turns into cursive.

The least they could do is continue to teach cursive by having the kids write on post-it notes. I think those are the only things anyone actually writes on any more.

When I was in elementary school, they called it cursive...but when we asked what "cursive" was, they defined it as "script". Then we understood.

If I have kids ever I think I will require them to write something everyday.

Something just should not be lost to technology.

I also get so mad when I hear ppl say they should do away with phone directories. I have a friend on FB who's always bashing ppl who still own phone directories.

I mean sometimes I like to look a number up MYSLEF!

I think we are gonna get so high tech we destroy ourselves.

I always think the same exact thing.

Sometimes, I catch an old episode of Little House On the Prairie on the television, and I think to myself ..... these people from the 1800s would go into massive shock if they had any idea what the world would be like in 2013. And some day, people will think of US as ancient. I can't even begin to imagine what the world will be like in 100+ years. I'm glad I'll be dead by that time.

no it's not, most official documents and things like checks require a signature that isn't printed...........

Hehe I really like being friends with you, mainly b/c you agree with ME so much hehe j/k

But yeah I think the technology is GOOD and all but I don't see why we can't have BOTH, the old ways AND the new ways. I think it's bad when we start getting rid of EVERYTHING old just b/c we have all this technology now.

I'm always a moderate who likes a happy medium, I have portable phones but still use a couple of old fashined ones with the squigly cords, at least you don't lose those lol

I think technology should be used as a luxury and not as a necessity.

Its like I said, it's GREAT that we can get online and find anyone phone number in like 3 seconds, BUT they should still keep printing phone books as well.

The world is increasingly becoming paperless, too. My employer is now FORCING all employees to have direct deposit or a posted debit. No more paper checks. And that's just small potatoes compared to how technology is taking over.

They should still continue to teach cursive, you'll need it when you buy a car or a house. A legal document requires a signature which is done in cursive.

I had handwriting, I will call it that in grammar school. Never was too great. By high school lettering came easier to me. Now I hardly ever write at all. Even signatures is half lettering and a line or two connecting letters. I work in a bakery and people want cakes written on them. What a disaster I am. I spent time relearning to write and took a penmanship lesson off the internet.
