View Full Version : Back on the air!
bencasey 02-23-2013, 11:53 AM A small digital station in Houston, which runs black programs, has been airing the show 7 nights a week for several months now. According to what they say, they have not gotten one complaint and every response to the show has been a positive one. So much for it being so offensive.
Mr. Television 02-23-2013, 02:30 PM I wonder if CBS knows. The show is not racist and it should be shown again. Most of those UPN sitcoms in the 1990's were offensive. People need to get a life.

HOUSTON (FOX 26) -
It was banished from television decades ago for its racist depiction of African Americans, but the TV show "Amos N Andy" is back on the air, here in Houston.
It is broadcast every weeknight by the Rejoice TV Network on digital channel 43.4. The station bills itself as positive, family-friendly programming for Houston's black community.
And its owners say "Amos N Andy" has gotten a bad rap as being behind the times. But as the first broadcast network show featuring an all-black cast, said Crystal Dillard, it was in some ways ahead of its time.
"Absolutely every situation, at the end of that show, there's a moral to that story," explained Dillard, who runs Rejoice TV along with her sister Kim.
The two debated long and hard before putting "Amos N Andy" on their station, since the TV show was a direct descendant of the popular - but blatantly racist - radio show in which black characters were portrayed by white actors.
In the end, they decided the show's stereotypes were outweighed by its depiction of pre-integration black America.
"We saw black doctors and judges and lawyers and police officers," said Kim Dillard.
While they understand why the show came under fire when it originally aired between 1951 and 1953, the sisters say times have changed. And so has the portrayal of black life.
"For every basketball wife out there, there's an Oprah," said Kim Dillard. "For every Flavor Flav, there's a Barack Obama."
The Dillards say "Amos N Andy" is the most popular show on Rejoice TV and they've never gotten a single complaint about it.

I'm sure they don't know because if they did, a cease and desist order would follow. No doubt they are running the show from a fan made set from 16mm that they picked up somewhere. No way would CBS ever license it or allow it to be shown. That was why they renewed all of the copyrights - to keep it buried forever.
Cincy Guy 03-04-2013, 10:05 AM This is good news. I really enjoy this show and try and watch it any chance that I get.
gilligan fanatic 03-04-2013, 04:03 PM I wonder how long it will stay on. Maybe after all these years it will finally be back nationally. It should be on just for the historical value alone, not to mention it is pretty funny.
DJM77 03-04-2013, 06:32 PM Some of the episodes are on youtube.

It will stay on as long as CBS doesn't know about it. Once they find out they will make them take it off.

You would think they would know about it by now
Mr. Drucker 03-27-2013, 10:17 AM I heard it was against FEDERAL LAW to air the show, due to the official FCC ban.

The show was never banned by the FCC, CBS withdrew it from syndication due to pressure from the NAACP but it wasn't banned from TV.

I was thinking the same thing.Maybe they are showing a little common sense and letting the station air it.If they had a little more common sense they would let it air nationally again. It really should have never been taken off the air,it's a harmless and entertaining show.
dahur1 04-09-2013, 04:04 PM The fact it's that station's most popular program says a lot.
I hope it's picked up nationally.
storrs19 04-21-2013, 09:02 PM I just bought the 10 dvd set a few years ago that has most of the episodes on it. Yes in only fair quality, but I figured I'll never see it restored so why not? It's a great program and funny as h**l IMHO
bencasey 04-22-2013, 09:09 PM CBS will never distribute it again which is why we'll never see it again in good quality nor likely never get the six episodes that didn't find their way to collectors. Whatever money they could generate is not worth the amount of **** they would take for selling the show, either to stations or on DVD.
DroopyVids 07-24-2013, 01:17 AM This is buried forever. I checked the copyrights on it and every one is still under copyright but not in syndication. You might be able to find copies out there but don't expect to find any new ones.

Road Dog 05-05-2016, 08:29 AM There was a local TV station here in Atlanta that used to air the the show on Sunday mornings around 5 AM in the late 1990s. I used to get up early and watch it. Sadly, it only aired for a few months and they kept showing the same dozen or so episodes over and over.

I have the complete series on VHS and I only watched one tape! Does anyone watch VHS anymore? I was going to keep it and transfer it on to my video library which is on SSD. Before that It was on HD about a year ago! May transfer it back to HD since a 12TB drive is only $400 now and that means it can store around 9,000 2 hour length movies at 1080p resolution. All the storage keeps getting more capacity and prices keep falling.
