Ten Out-of-Print Horror Flicks to Make You Drool
by Tyler Doupe
February 18, 2013

As a horror fan and collector, one of the things I find utterly maddening is discovering that a title I’m dying to add to my collection is out-of-print and selling for a fortune. Rather than do the sane thing, and wait for the film to be re-issued, I usually cough up absolutely idiotic sums of money, because I am reckless, impatient, and highly impulsive. Since I am also thoughtful, I have compiled a guide to out of print titles (OOP), the going rate, and more.

Included in the list below are ten films in various stages of manufacturing moratorium. Several of them are recently out of print, so we are providing you a ‘heads’ up to so that you have the opportunity to snag them before they become hideously expensive.

Popcorn (1991)

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e10/JamesGrec/dc481c0a-7ef4-4c8d-8fa7-b92b2b91fe56_zpse33d0b5a.jpg

This 1991 film is commanding nearly $80 on Amazon for a brand new copy. I impetuously shelled out a hefty pile of dough for this one. Popcorn is far from a perfect film, but it gets bonus points for paying homage to B-rated monster movies of the 1950s and featuring a supporting performance from genre veteran Dee Wallace Stone.

Popcorn was recently slated for the re-release treatment, and then just as quickly as the re-issue was announced, the distributor pulled out. News of a re-release through a different company soon followed, but to date, the film is still out of print.

Dolls (1987)

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e10/JamesGrec/ed49360e-957d-4f3e-bf95-4df1e2d8c1e2_zps39aecb3d.jpg

The 1987 Stuart Gordon helmed flick, Dolls, has just recently gone out- of-print. It’s steadily been increasing in price, with a new copy fetching up to $27 on leading online resale sites.

Dolls is one of my personal favorite Gordon films. The concept is very unique and it sets itself apart from a lot of other films of its kind with likable leads and a unique fantasy spin on the killer doll sub-genre.

Dolls is somewhat of a modern fairy tale, with the moral of the story being ‘Don’t be a dick and you won’t get killed by satanic toys’.

Madman (1982)

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e10/JamesGrec/51dCf8MIRrL_zpsb925d3d7.jpg

Madman received a 30th anniversary re-release via Code Red Releasing, and just as quickly as it came back in to print, went out. This type of thing is not entirely uncommon for Code Red. Their OOP catalogue is considerably larger than most distributors.

The re-released version brought fans higher quality picture and audio than past releases, and an anamorphic widescreen transfer of the film. The previous release was in widescreen format, but not anamorphic, which caused it to display poorly on 16:9 televisions.

The Brood (1979)

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e10/JamesGrec/3c3146f7-5095-4c7b-ac60-8f84f29f45b0_zps577d6186.jpg

I lucked out, in that I bought my copy of The Brood when it was still in print, so I paid next to nothing for it. This is classic David Cronenberg. He puts his signature bizarre twist on the killer kid sub-genre in this highly enjoyable flick.

Since The Brood hasn’t been out-of-print for an excessively long time, it can still be picked up for a lot less than films that have been OOP long term; it currently going for around $36 new, on Amazon.

Scanners (1981)

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e10/JamesGrec/9bdfa861-7438-4eeb-a6e3-1696b4529e27_zpsa4d438ff.jpg

Scanners was in print at the time that I purchased it, about a year ago. But, has recently gone OOP and is currently fetching up to $30 for a new copy via Amazon.

Scanners is worth picking up while you can still get a used copy for around $10. Unless this David Cronenberg gem scores a re-issue, it will be commanding a king’s ransom on auction sites, before long.

Fright Night Part II (1988)

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e10/JamesGrec/c048eb68-d3f8-420f-9b18-280cb35577cd_zps1e7aca37.jpg

I personally got hosed on this title. I picked up a used copy of Fright Night II online and received a homemade bootleg. While the original film is readily available on DVD and has been reimagined in a critically panned remake, the sequel cant even get a proper widescreen DVD release.

The OOP version of the film is presented in full screen format, with poor audio and picture quality. A copy of Fright Night II, containing the awesome special feature that is ‘interactive menus’ will run you nearly $100 on leading auction sites.

Considering that the movie pales in comparison to its predecessor, the smart thing to do would be to wait for a re-issue.

Sleepaway Camp Survival Kit

Featuring:

Sleepaway Camp (1983)
Sleepaway Camp II: Unhappy Campers (1988)
Sleepaway Camp III: Teenage Wasteland (1989)

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e10/JamesGrec/561ec330-49b9-40db-b6c9-98db6b159744_zps53048fe5.jpg

I bought the Sleepaway Camp Survival Kit at Best Buy about ten years ago for $30. I was absolutely shocked to see that this out-of-print set is being sold for upwards of $150 through various online resellers.

The Sleepaway Camp box set was released with two different sets of cover art. The first generation release had a red cross on the front. However, The Red Cross took issue with the similarity to their logo, thus leading to a second DVD box set release with re-designed cover art. The price difference between the two sets is negligible.

The first Sleepaway Camp film is an epic cult classic, but the second and third films are average B-movie sequels, at best. The first film in the series can be picked up new for around $35. Though, the sequels are worth owning for the completist, I would suggest waiting for a distributor to issue a re-release, rather than forking over a small fortune.

Let's Scare Jessica to Death (1971)

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e10/JamesGrec/b5a17183-c14e-4bc9-a863-f866e1a5f91f_zpsd86faef8.jpg

This 1970s classic horror flick is available as a digital download for $9.99, but OOP on DVD. Let’s Scare Jessica to Death will set you back about $30 for a new DVD and is probably worth picking up while it can still be had for a semi reasonable price.

The film stars Barton Heyman, who two years later, went on to play Dr. Klein in The Exorcist.

Clownhouse (1989)

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e10/JamesGrec/38004950-3ad0-4784-a50d-d66a8ffc4c89_zpsa0d87058.jpg

Clownhouse is one of the most controversial horror films of the past 25 years, but the controversy has very little to do with the movie itself. The film’s director, Victor Salva, reportedly committed a sex crime involving a minor (who had a starring role in the film) during the production.

Many have speculated that the reason the film was pulled from the shelves almost immediately after its release was in response to massive backlash regarding the controversy surrounding the film.

A new copy of the US release will run you about $85 on Amazon.

Nightmares (1983)

http://i36.photobucket.com/albums/e10/JamesGrec/ce7c71ab-7e58-45ea-a1b9-36d97f631819_zps3556a780.jpg

This flick was originally made for television and stands as the hardest to find selection on our list. A new copy will cost you around $300. It’s hard to imagine why it’s so expensive, seeing as how both the critical and audience reaction to the film was extremely poor.

Nightmares’ saving grace is its eclectic cast; it features performances from Emilio Estevez and Moon Unit Zappa. If you still own a VCR, a used VHS copy of the film can be had for under $20.

I have all but the Sleepaway Camp Survival Kit(only have the first one on DVD), and Nightmares(though I have it on VHS)

My copy of Madman is the Anchor Bay release, I didn't double dip.

Most of the Code Red DVDs have gone OOP, some seems like just a few weeks after release, I try to snatch them up when I can. Same with Scorpion Releasing.

The only one of these I didn't care for was "Fright Night 2", and I didn't see Madman.

The rest are good flicks, and downright scary.

I would expect to see Scanners on Blu ray within a year, hopefully, since it has been announced Scanners II & III are slated to be released by Scream Factory (actual dates pending). Even read rumors of a Criterion release for Scanners.
(I'll believe that when I see it)

Been waiting a while for Popcorn to come out again.
At this stage of the game I would think it would be on Blu as well as dvd.

I don't hold much hope for a Blu ray of Let's Scare Jessica To Death, but quietly hope it can happen one day.

Out of this list, these are the three I'd like the most.

Here are some more out-of-print horror that I managed to find.

I won't be mentioning films that have older discontinued releases but may be available in newer in-print DVD or Blu-ray releases.

This is just to start off with. I'll look for more when I have the time.

Fortunately(or unfortunately depending on how you feel about the movies) you can get both Blood Murders super cheap on Amazon, usually when movies go OOP the prices skyrocket. Parts 1 and 2 are even available in a pack with Junior and Deadly Species.

Even though they're blatant ripoffs (right down to the hockey mask and summer camp) of the Friday The 13th franchise. I like them.

I think I stopped being aware of this series around Number 4. Is this is longest running horror film series ever? I can't think of a longer one, personally.

Are these actual sequels, as in a continuing story, or do they go into separate plots?

The first few, I don't remember how many had continuing characters, I'm not sure after that, by part 7 they all kind started blending together. They stopped trying to be horror and turned into softcore soap operas.

You have the 1991 Campfire Tales listed, but the pic is from the 1997 Campfire Tales.

Thanks, yeah the 1997 film is OOP.

Ten More Out-Of-Print Horror Flicks to Make You Drool.. and Scream!
by Tyler Doupe
September 30, 2013

In February, we ran a feature showcasing ten notable OOP horror titles, the going rate, and where to find them. Due to positive reader response regarding the piece, we are bringing you ten more rare DVDs to grab while you can!

Many of the DVDs on this list are recently out of print and can still be obtained for a nominal cost, so if you see anything of interest, make haste to pick them up before they dramatically increase in price. The more costly titles are still worth checking into, as values tend to continue increasing until a re-release is negotiated.

Don't Look Now (1973)

http://cdn.fearnet.com/sites/default/files/images/News/GSB/dont_look_now.jpg

Nicolas Roeg's slow-burn horror classic focusing on a couple who has tragically lose their beloved daughter to an unfortunate accident was controversial for its time, but by today’s more permissive standards is less so.

However, the love scene between young Donald Sutherland and Julie Christie still plays out as a bit gratuitous.

Amazon currently has the most competitive pricing for the film:

A new copy will run you around $40.00, but you can still pick up a used copy of the Paramount DVD release for around $15.00

Body Double (1984)

http://cdn.fearnet.com/sites/default/files/images/News/GSB/body_double.jpg

The Sony Pictures DVD release of Brian De Palma’s steamy thriller has just recently gone out of print and it's still possible to get your hands on a used copy for next to nothing. New copies are upward of $20.00 and likely to continue to rise in cost.

Body Double is a great deal of fun; it plays out something like an X-rated version of Rear Window, and the Hitchcock influences are obvious and plentiful.

Also look for a brief appearance from Re-Animator's Barbara Crampton in her feature film debut.

The film was recently given the limited edition Blu-ray treatment (3,000 copies produced) by Twilight Time, and sold out shortly thereafter.

A new copy of the limited edition Blu will run you nearly $90.00 by way of third party vendors on Amazon.

Body Parts (1991)

http://cdn.fearnet.com/sites/default/files/images/News/GSB/body_parts_1.jpg

I'd almost completely forgotten that this movie existed until I began researching for this article, but it’s actually not a bad film at all. I remember enjoying it as an over-the-top kind of fright flick when I watched it as a youngster, and further research yielded several favorable reviews when I checked around the web.

Body Parts finds a man (Jeff Fahey) receiving an arm transplant from a serial killer, and it seems that limb has a mind of its own and really wants to keep killing. Brad Dourif plays somewhat against type as a fellow transplant recipient.

A new copy of the Paramount DVD goes for around $50.00 on Amazon, and used copies for about half that.

Lord of Illusions (1995)

http://cdn.fearnet.com/sites/default/files/images/News/GSB/lord_illusions.jpg

Clive Barker's 1995 feature was met with mostly positive critical feedback upon its release, and remains highly regarded amongst many of his fans today.

Scott Bakula is well cast as Harry D’Amour, a private detective tasked with uncovering information about a mysterious magician with strong ties to the occult.

A new copy of the MGM DVD is going for nearly $40.00 on Amazon, while used copies can be found on the CD Universe website for around $6.00

The Final Terror (1983)

http://cdn.fearnet.com/sites/default/files/images/News/GSB/final_terror.jpg

This ‘80s slasher had a pretty respectable cast with Adrienne Zmed, Joe Pantoliano and Daryl Hannah having lead roles. The formula is pretty typical: a group of teens take to the woods and wind up being stalked by a baddie who wants them dead.

We were unable to locate any new copies, but Amazon has it available used for under $30.00. I cannot speak to the picture quality of the Trinity Entertainment DVD release, but I have a VHS copy of The Final Terror and the picture is very dark.

This film is worth the purchase if you're a die-hard slasher film collector, but for the average horror fan it’s probably just as well to wait and check it out when the film receives a re-release.

Hollywood Chainsaw Hookers (1988)

http://cdn.fearnet.com/sites/default/files/images/News/GSB/hollywood_chainsaw_hookers.jpg

This Linnea Quigley grindhouse horror-comedy classic about ladies of the night who wield chainsaws for the sole purpose of dismembering their clients is out of print again.

It received a 20th Anniversary re-release via Retromedia, and since then no additional copies have been manufactured. A new copy goes as high as $90.00, but used it goes as low as $42.00 on Amazon.

The Night Flier (1997)

http://cdn.fearnet.com/sites/default/files/images/News/GSB/night_flier.jpg

Stephen King’s story of a mysterious stranger landing at small town airports and committing mass murder has been OOP for a bit.

A new copy of the HBO Home Video release will cost you nearly $90.00 on Amazon, but as of this posting, Half.com has new copies of the DVD available for just over $50.00.

A used disc will set you back about $20.00 on either website.

Little Witches (1996)

http://cdn.fearnet.com/sites/default/files/images/News/GSB/little_witches.jpg

This Image Entertainment release has received a fair amount of play on FEARnet. It centers around a group of girls at an all-female Catholic boarding school who find themselves drawn in to the alluring art of witchcraft.

Little Witches was released about six months after The Craft, but it's not quite the same caliber. Still, if you dig the film and are in the market for a copy, a new DVD will run you around $80.00 on Amazon.

Oddly enough, used copies start closer to $100. As of this posting there were no copies available on EBay of Half.com

Last House on Dead End Street (1977)

http://cdn.fearnet.com/sites/default/files/images/News/GSB/lhodes.jpg

This notoriously sleazy tale about a band of snuff filmmakers and the results of their "art" really has audiences polarized. People seem to love or hate this film, with very few – if any – falling between those extremes.

The two-disc special edition DVD - which was distributed by a company called Barrel Entertainment - has been out of print for ages, and continues to get more and more costly.

At the time of posting, we were able to locate a new copy on EBay for $90.00, with used copies going for about the same price on Amazon.

Rawhead Rex (1986)

http://cdn.fearnet.com/sites/default/files/images/News/GSB/rawhead_rex.jpg

Yikes! The one and only unopened copy available on Amazon is priced at $240.00! A new copy of this disc is slightly less expensive on Half.com; the single copy the site has available is listed at $200.00.

The good news is that used copies of this Pioneer DVD release go as low as $75.00.

This early Clive Barker adaptation is a satanic story following a demonic creature that plagues a village in Ireland after being accidentally released from long-term captivity.

Updates:

- Sorority Babes in the Slimeball Bowl-O-Rama (1988) has been given the re-release treatment by way of Full Moon Features! I just bought a copy on DeepDiscount.Com for $7.99

- Popcorn (1991) has received a Manufacture on Demand (MOD) release. The film is transferred onto a DVD-R with the original artwork on the disc, and the packaging and cover art are all authentic looking as well.

It can be purchased on Amazon for around $10.00

- Hell Night (1981) has also received a MOD release.

- Linnea Quigley’s Horror Workout Video (1990) is also available for the first time on DVD; it’s extremely rare and appears to only be available through the Legacy Features website for $25.00.

If you're a fan of Ms. Quigley, grab this one while you can... because I suspect it won’t be around at that price for long.

I have the DVD for The Final Terror, and the picture quality is worse than my VHS copy.

I'd like to see Last House On Dead End Street get a re release. I missed out on the Barrel release, and only have it on VHS.

What I'd really like to see is the original 175 minute cut get released...of course that will never happen.
