ABC Moves ‘Happy Endings' to Fridays
Comedy debuts on night March 29, with ‘Celebrity Wife Swap' and ‘The Taste' taking over Tuesdays
By Andrea Morabito -- Broadcasting & Cable, 2/13/2013 11:24:37 PM
In another setback to the struggling comedy, ABC announced it will pull Happy Endings from the schedule for a few weeks and shift it to Fridays starting March 29.
New cooking competition show The Taste will shift back an hour to Tuesday at 9 p.m. on Feb. 26, pre-empting the previously scheduled episodes of Happy Endings. Reality series Celebrity Wife Swap will return on Tuesday at 8 p.m. the same night to lead into The Taste.
After ABC pulled fellow Tuesday comedy Don't Trust the B---- in Apartment 23 last month, Happy Endings was scheduled to air back-to-back episodes on the night until Dancing With the Stars returned the week of March 18.
It will now air back-to-back originals on Friday from 8-9 p.m., where Last Man Standing and Malibu Country have aired this season. Both those comedies will have completed their season orders by that date.
The Friday move pushes Happy Endings one step closer to cancelation, despite ABC Entertainment chairman Paul Lee pledging his support for both it and Apt. 23 at the most recent TCA press tour and an attempt to double-run the series on Sundays and Tuesdays proved unsuccessful. Its most recent episodes on Jan. 29 earned a 1.3 rating with adults 18-49 and 2.9 million viewers.

Which means ABC is putting the show in position to fail. LOL

ABC couldn’t just let us have the illusion that they gave a damn about Happy Endings, could they? It was bad enough that they’d moved it to Sundays, where it faced off against EVERYTHING THAT IT IS GOOD ON TELEVISION. Then they sh*tcanned their time-slot partner, Don’t Trust the B—- in Apt. 23. Now? The ultimate disgrace. Happy Endings has been bumped to the Friday night death slot.
But wait! It gets worse.

Pavan 02-18-2013, 09:46 PM Death slot? ABC is already doing OK with Last Man Standing on Fridays. It's a no-risk move because Shark Tank is #1 on Fridays at 9pm and all of Friday.

Shark Tank.
It wasn't doing well on Tuesdays and ABC moved it to Fridays in season 2. And it has blossomed. Fridays is NOT Saturdays. There are some decent performing shows on Fridays right now...
TVFactFan 02-18-2013, 09:50 PM Shark Tank.

But Shark Tank is not a sitcom so that may not happen with HE but we will see
Pavan 02-18-2013, 09:51 PM OK Last Man Standing is doing 7 million on Fridays. It was on Tuesdays last season and is doing fine for Fridays.
Anyway, ABC is only airing Happy Endings for three weeks on Fridays to finish up the episodes for this season...

Which means it's a 90% chance the show will not be picked up
Pavan 02-18-2013, 09:59 PM This is its THIRD season. Only one more season for syndication = money.
yankeesrj12 02-18-2013, 10:43 PM No way Happy Endings is renewed. ABC is doing awful this season and they need to cut dead weight. Keeping a show with a 1.2 is not the way to improve ratings on the network.

I heard even Modern Family is falling off

Modern Family is still strong, but not as strong as it was last season (or even earlier this season).
Here is a post I made about its 2/6 airing:
I went back and it appears that is the lowest 18-49 ratings for Modern Family since the April 20, 2011 episode. I don't think its cause for concern just yet, but one has to wonder what is causing the drop. Perhaps The Neighbors at 830 is causing viewers to flee to American Idol and they just don't return to ABC? Maybe American Idol is becoming too much? Or is it because Modern Family is just not as good this season (as some have mentioned)?
EmoJoe 02-18-2013, 11:38 PM Like I said in another thread, the Middle/Suburgatory/Modern Family/Happy Endings line-up was working great for all shows involved and they should've just left it alone.

I agree. It would make more sense to move the show back to Wednesdays if the network was trying to save it.. The audience for Happy Endings and LMS are totally different. I doubt it's going to do well here.

I don't blame ABC for wanting to try and make Suburgatory bigger behind Modern Family, but the plan backfired. I will applaud ABC for noticing the shrinking ratings and wanting to move Suburgatory back to its 830 home sometime in March or April.

They need to move Revenge back too.

Agreed. Best line-up.
Pavan 02-19-2013, 12:33 AM They need to move Revenge back too.
Disagree there. Revenge was up from last season up until the last 2-3 airings.

ABC really had no other options for the 9pm timeslot. Premiering two new dramas back to back probably would have been more trouble for ABC. Imagine how bad it might be had the schedule been AFV, Once Upon a Time, Nashville, 666 Park Avenue. Yikes! ABC probably took the best route possible when it decided to move Revenge. The only other option would have been Scandal, but it wasn't as strong as it is now.
Regarding Revenge, I think the ratings reflect the quality more than anything. I'm two episodes behind, but this season has been a snooze-fest. I hear last nights episode was good, so I'm hopeful for a turnaround.
comedyfreak 02-19-2013, 05:09 AM I wish ABC would stop screwing around with the programs they are causing the low ratings. The shows were doing fine on Wednesdays.

I think APT23 would have still failed because this season the show just became too stupid
