View Full Version : Have You Ever Been In A Hail Storm?
Family Ties Forever! 02-12-2013, 11:38 PM Has anyone been in a hail storm?
We had a hail storm here yesterday morning at 7:30am. It sounded like it was coming down really hard. It lasted about five or six minutes. It startled my cat Romeo and me. We weren't expecting it. Thankfully we were inside.
There was also a hail storm here a few years ago that was really bad. My mother was telling me that the size of the hail was very large and that it killed a large plant that we had had for a very long time. She said that the hail when it hit the ground was taking time to melt.
Mr. Television 02-12-2013, 11:43 PM Yea I've been in a few. It's very scary if you're out in it.
Janice 02-14-2013, 05:07 AM I've seen small hailstorms, but nothing of the likes that you've described. I'm guessing that those chunks of ice can be brutal on cars?
ZeldaGilroy 02-14-2013, 08:19 AM We have a lot of hail storms around here. They can be scary, especially if you aren't expecting it. Very loud! It is interesting to see the big chunks of ice all over the ground when it's over though. Too bad those chucks do so much damage!

I can only imagine what damage the hail can do to cars.
wise3 02-15-2013, 09:12 AM I was driving in the rain in upstate New York years ago. The rain rapidly increased to the point where I literally could not see the road, and I came to a stop. Then it started hailing. Looked and sounded really impressive; I was waiting for it to break the windshield, but thankfully it didn't. After a while the hail stopped and the rain slacked off, so I continued on and caught up with it again. Stopped again, longer this time to be sure it was gone.
Not quite as scary as the time a tornado brushed by my car, but I wouldn't want to repeat either experience.
Retro4Life 02-15-2013, 12:25 PM Yeah, I've been through a few but none of them had huge hail; probably not much bigger than pea sized.
Do you know how big the hail was in your storm, Jenny?
tiredmike59 02-15-2013, 12:53 PM Last year was the worst I went thru, baseball size hail made a mess of my siding. I guess it's better than what Russia got yesterday, meteors.
Yeah, we've had them here too. So far it's been mostly dime size or smaller.

Oh wow, I'm sure chunks of ice would be brutal and scary if they hit a car, esp. if in it.

The size of the hail from the other day was that of small marbles, like Chinese Checkers size. That's how someone in the complex described it to me.
RoryGilmore 02-16-2013, 07:00 PM There was a storm with baseball sized hail when I was growing up in Tornado Alley
Penny Lane 02-17-2013, 11:18 AM We were camping when a hail storm hit. The hail was about the size of a ping pong ball and it had sharp spikes in it. It made Swiss cheese out of our awning.
It looked a lot like this;
We were in a bad one a number of years ago. It dented our siding and tore up some shutters but no broken windows thankfully.
Schmoopie 03-15-2013, 03:19 AM Oh sadly, many! Never a major one though but I've been through pretty bad ones-especially in Texas.

That sounds bad, but that's good that it didn't break the windows.
Vahan 03-15-2013, 08:43 PM Nope. Never have.
But then again, I live in Southern California in L.A., which is devoid of hailstorms.
