Have you given up on some of your favorite foods because of high prices ?
It seems like since Hostess bit the dust their competitors have jacked up their prices. A new discount grocery store opened up in my neighborhood and I went in there to check it out. They were selling boxes of cupcakes for 69 cents,it was a company I never heard of and the cupcakes were stale and didn't have much taste but the price was delicious. I checked out their meat section and found a pack of those 6 thin porkchops which sells for 7 dollars in the other store I normally shop at but were only 2.99. They didn't look too swift though, kind of gray in color and I could not read the expiration date because someone smudged the ink, probably on purpose. I wonder what my expiration date would have been if I ate them, I decided not to buy them. They did have good prices on potato chips, only a couple bucks for a huge bag not 4-5 dollars like I normally see. Really getting sick of these high prices.

Yeah, I tend to shop at Aldi a lot lately. Though there are a few things I never buy there: Meat(especially), bread, and fruit. Basically most anything that is supposed to be fresh and doesn't have a long shelf life.
But they do have a lot of stuff there that I really like as well. And I love the prices.

The meat at Aldi is just as good as any you would buy at your regular store. I've been buying it for years and never once had a problem. The same goes for their bread and fruits and the latter I've found to be much better quality than the fruit carried by any of the other area supermarkets. Most all of the products offered by Aldi and just as good or better than their brand name supermarket counterparts. The only exception I've found so far is their version of hot pockets and they were terrible. Their snacks are my favorites especially the Clancy's microwave popcorn. You get 6 bags for $1.69 and the name brands such as Orville Redenbacher or Pop Secret will cost at least $5.00 or more for the same size box and Clancy's is way better. The Clancy's corn and potato chips are also just as good as any of the brand names.

Aldi is wonderful. I stumbled upon them in a shopping mall in Rego Park. Their prices are dirt cheap and the quality of food high. They are a little quirky though - you have to bring your own shopping bags (if you don't and ask for one it's 11 cents - normally that'd annoy me but at their prices....it doesn't!). Also you have to pay a quarter for a shopping cart. You get it back when you return it though. And no credit cards. A little disconcerting the FIRST time you go there...but then...I went onto their website and they explained they do these things to bring customers the VERY LOWEST prices. And they do. Their prices are often cheaper than Walmart and Trader Joes. Cheaper than Trader Joes!? NOW that 's hard to do.

Interestingly Aldi and Trader Joe's are both owned by the same parent company. Both are wonderful stores. I actually turned down a job opportunity because it was in a city without a Trader Joe's - that's how much I love them.

Big Lots is where I buy most of my snacks. One thing I like about them is their selection of chips and they carry brands not available by the local grocery store chains. Big Lots will very often get items that are regional or local to certain areas of the U.S. and will distribute them to all stores. The same can be said of their beverages. The discount shelf is the first place I head for each time I go because you can get some really good deals. When food items get to within 2 weeks of their expiration date, they go onto the discount shelf at 50% off. If you want an even better deal, check the date and if gets to within one or to days then most stores will mark it down further if you bring it to their attention but you have to ask. If the item is still on the discount shelf even one day after the date then they won't sell it. I've gotten many bags of chips and other items for as little as .25 cents and the quality was just as good as when they were first made. Some people have this absurd notion that once a product reaches it's expiration date it's no longer good and in a lot of cases that's simply not true.

I am mainly talking about ground beef when I say "meat". The main reason I don't buy it at Aldi is because we have a local store that has the best ground beef! I have bought it at Aldi and Walmart to save some pennies, but the stuff, especially at Walmart, cooked up dry and tasteless like they filled it with sawdust. If you have a local grocery store that grinds its own hamburger, you should try it. You may never go back to "discount meat" again. ;)
Now mind you, I can't say anything about other meats like steaks and roasts at those stores because I haven't tried them from there. But mainly I go to my local grocery store for that.

I have to disagree with you on that point. I don't know if it is just at our Aldi, but Clancy's chips always taste stale to me. They could have a good expiration date on them and be fresh as can be, but for some reason, they have this stale taste right out of the package.

The only time that bothers me is when I forget to bring a quarter.:) Otherwise, I find the carts at Aldi in better shape than other stores. And I have yet to get one with a whobbly wheel.

I've never had any issues with their ground beef nor their chips but the only flavor I'll eat is plain. I can't stand barbecue nor sour cream & onion so I have no idea how they taste but other family members here seem to like them. I guess people have different tastes, I prefer Utz over any of the name brands and I don't care much for Lays although I will eat them if it's the only thing available.

I just shop at Wal Mart Supercenter. I get good prices on stuff there, and I don't have to worry about it being out of date. Wal mart is very strict on what they sell. But the other side to that coin is that they usually run out of stuff way before the expiration date. I have to admit, there fresh meats are pretty pricey. But I buy allot of the Tyson frozen Boneless skinless chicken breasts for 5.97. Darn good price too. I get about 6 to 7 very meaty pieces inside. I just pop 3 in the Microwave on a safe plate for 12 minutes, and I'm ready to eat.

I can't speak for your Walmart but the one where I'm from has been known to keep food on the shelf past it's expiration date. I've found yogurt, cheese, orange juice, bacon, etc... still on the shelf 2 weeks or longer after it expired and this store will not reduce an item's price that is nearing it's expiration date. The only foods they will reduce in price is bakery items.

I rarely have problems with store brands but I will buy the name brand if it's on sale. One store brand product I was disappointed with was their pizza rolls. I tried one box at .99 cents and they weren't good at all. Totinos pizza rolls average $2.19 for a box of 15 and aren't worth it. The same store that had the ones I didn't like ran a sale on Totinos at 10-for-$10 and I had 30 coupons good for $1.00 off 2 boxes so that brought the cost down to $15 plus this store has printable coupons that let you save $5.00 off a $25.00 purchase so my final cost for 30 boxes was $10.00 and I saved over $55.00.

I used to love pizza rolls till I got burned out on them. I used to love those little Stouffer's meatloaf and roasted turkey tv dinners but paying over 3 dollars for 5 bitefuls of food just didn't seem worth it. Now I'm hooked on those Patio single burritos for 50 cents apiece.

I LOVE Aldi! They have fantastic produce and imported, special stuff. I actually haven't had a lot of luck finding meat at my local store - the selection is really poor (the beef wasn't very lean). I've been to another one that had a lot more/better meat variety, so I guess it is different at each store.

Many of their store brands are made by "name brand" companies but have an Aldi label.

There stores are very clean, and the associates are very knowledgeable. Aldi is definitely my favorite grocery store for saving money.

My city used to have lots of grocery stores but now we only have three grocery stores in my area and when Mom and I would go grocery shopping we used to get all of our groceries at Albertson's and they had great prices on groceries and every time we would go grocery shopping I always looked forward to going to Albertson's because I looked forward to a trip to Ross Dress For Less after the grocery shopping was done and I would buy a new purse or backpack but then another grocery store brought Albertson's and then the prices for groceries weren't the same. In the country I have two grocery stores and one of them has been in business since the 50's and even with a name change it's still the same and Mom often goes there for groceries she can't find anywhere else but when a new shopping center opened up in the 80's the grocery store that the shopping center had opened up stole some of the other grocery store's customers and it's prices are good but the grocery store doesn't have many of the stuff they have featured in their sale ads. Another store that Mom and I go to sometimes is Smart And Final and we first heard about Smart And Final from my grandfather and we thought it was impressive and it has very good prices for groceries and they have giant boxes of almost every food you can think of. Lastly here's some secret advice that might help you when you are shopping for cheap groceries. If you want the best prices on eggs or snacks I recommend you head to CVS Pharmacy and you'll be amazed at what great eggs CVS Pharmacy has and not to mention their bagged popcorn tastes delicious too

When I lived in the city my old house was within walking distance of a Food 4 Less and when it first opened Mom and I used to spend hours buying food and buying candy for ourselves and the prices for food were impressive and we would learn about Food 4 Less's sales from the radio commercials and they were the only store where Mom and I would buy ourselves boxes of Little Debbie Banana Twins. We also had Ralph's grocery stores too and when we went in one twice we were surprised at how great Ralph's was and they had sales on many things Mom and I loved to buy and not only did Ralph's have groceries but they had a section full of 5,99 movies and music cds too. But then Ralph's closed but it was a cool grocery store and believe it or not I have a Ralph's keychain card that is on my Baby Phat purse that I got as a souvenir from a first shopping trip to Ralph's. But if you want to find good deals on groceries real cheap try Safeway because every Friday they have sales called Friday 5's and you can find good prices on many items such as Nabisco cookies Ore-Ida fries Jimmy Dean sausages and lots more but then sometimes they have deals on new items where you can get an item for free and it's a really good money saver

Some store brands or off-brands are just as good as the name brands for the most part.

The only thing I'll buy that's a name brand is pop...to me, most store or off brands of pop is like drinking sugar water...but then again...

Frito-Lay makes Tostitos, but they're pricier than another tortilla chip brand I buy from Frito-Lay...Santitas. Just as good and half the price....

When I was born my mom was a huge fan of Alpha Beta and she always would find good deals on lots of groceries including my baby diapers and baby formula and every time Mom would bring me to Alpha Beta the store clerks always would know that I was coming and would give Mom extra discounts on my baby formula and baby food. It's hard to find good deals at supermarkets now because ever since stores such as Kmart Walmart and Target started selling groceries I think in a few years the supermarket chains will continue to exist but will have a new image and start opening wherehouse type grocery stores where people can find cheap discounts on many items such as meat sodas produce and cereal and other things at great prices. But I have a feeling that the supermarket chains such as Alpha Beta Pathmark Albertson's and Jewel "Not the singer but a supermarket that's owned by Albertson's that has that same name" will make a comeback and reintroduce themselves to a new generation of grocery store shoppers who want good deals on groceries today

Most of those chains haven't opened a store in my area (yet).

I've had good luck with Kroger though, like getting strawberry preserves and pitted plums for about half of what other places charge.

Also once in a while, Dollar Tree has a great deal: big bags of Snyder's pretzels, Kraft Miracle Whip, Keebler crackers, and Ultimate Helper (General Mills), $1 each. They even had 32 oz. Welch's Grape Jelly once at $1.

I'm a big fan of Dollar Tree. The store here only has 4-5 aisles of groceries, but it is so worth it to stop there, since nearly everything's $1.00. The Snyder's pretzels are a good deal, as are the cereals (where else can you get name brand Cinnamon Toast Crunch or Raisin Bran for $1.00?). Good deals.

Another supermarket that you can check out for cheap groceries is Grocery Outlet Bargain Market and they have good prices on tons of groceries like they have deals on Kraft Macaroni And Cheese for $2,99 to Dawn dish soap for $1,99 and Buy 1 Get 1 Free sales on Red Baron Pizza and Swanson TV Dinners and when you shop at Grocery Outlet Bargain Market you actually save better than at any other supermarket and not to mention the cute commercials with the cute puppets. Mom is a fan of Grocery Outlet Bargain Market and she goes there often to find good deals on groceries. If you have a Grocery Outlet Bargain Market in your city I advise you to visit there and you'll be very surprised at the neat prices they have and they also have stuff you cannot find anywhere else
