The 25 Best Black Sitcoms of All Time
By Julian Kimble | Feb 11, 2013 | 9:37 am
Once upon a time, there was a phenomenon called black television.
There are now entire networks dedicated to black programming, but there was once a time when the boom of black TV was staggering. It was a triumph, because in the early days of television, black actors only found work in stereotypical roles. It wasn't until the 1950s that Amos 'n' Andy became the first situational comedy with an all-black cast. However, the show was removed from the air because of complaints that it continued to perpetuate stereotypes.
Black sitcoms were largely dormant until the '70s, then finally hitting a stride in the '80s. In the '90s, that stride became a sprint, with networks scrambling to reach black audiences. This coincided with a celebration of black culture, as Afrocentrism was embraced by hip-hop and it became commonplace to see Malcolm X hats and Howard University sweatshirts in music videos and in the streets. It felt like the perfect marriage of African-American culture and popular culture.
The number of black sitcoms has declined greatly since those glory days, but the most memorable shows have left an impressive legacy. For this reason, we recall the 25 best black sitcoms of all time.
Zoneboy 02-11-2013, 06:24 PM Too bad The Amos 'N Andy Show wasn't on the list but that was to be expected.
cleverfun3000 02-11-2013, 09:11 PM Ha Ha Ha. Very Funny. There were ONLY 30 ever made!
Zoneboy 02-11-2013, 10:35 PM Ha Ha Ha. Very Funny. There were ONLY 30 ever made!
Only 30 black sitcoms? I thought there were more than that.

Thanks, I was sure it was a heck-of-a-lot more than 30.
USATVFAN 02-11-2013, 11:20 PM There were more then 30 Black sitcoms:http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_sitcom

See above.
USATVFAN 02-11-2013, 11:28 PM Anyway I think the Jeffersons is the African American sitcom. I laughed much harder at the Jeffersons then the Cosby show. Of course it a matter of opinion and taste.
Jeffersons, Good Times, a Different World and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air should all be ahead of Cosby Show.
Mr. Television 02-12-2013, 12:02 AM Anything that puts the Wayans Bros. On the list, I can't take seriously.
Zoneboy 02-12-2013, 12:05 AM Anything that puts the Wayans Bros. On the list, I can't take seriously.
At least they didn't include Homeboys in Outer Space.
Regulus 02-12-2013, 12:07 AM No surprise The Cosby Show made it to No. 1. My personal favorite is Julia. I'd like to see someone put it out on DVD.
Mr. Television 02-12-2013, 12:10 AM At least they didn't include Homeboys in Outer Space.
I'm embarrassed to admit I watched the first episode of that sitcom just out of curiosity. I'll never get those 30 minutes back again.
Mr. Television 02-12-2013, 12:11 AM No surprise The Cosby Show made it to No. 1. My personal favorite is Julia. I'd like to see someone put it out on DVD.
I wish Julia would at least come on TV. I've only seen one episode of it and I liked it.
tvfan25 02-12-2013, 09:09 AM Where was "AMEN"?????? That was a great show!
factsoflife 02-13-2013, 04:14 AM I think that Fresh Prince is far too high on this list.
bencasey 02-13-2013, 07:19 PM I didn't look at the list but if Beulah isn't on it then I'm not interested! Somebody bawl for Beulah?
cleverfun3000 02-13-2013, 08:16 PM You're correct. Way more: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_sitcom
I Stand Corrected.
DJM77 02-13-2013, 09:43 PM Where was "AMEN"?????? That was a great show!
That's My Mama was also unjustly excluded. I'll bet Clifton Davis hates this list.
mets82 02-13-2013, 10:18 PM I would put Different Strokes, Family Matters higher. I thought the Cosby Show is a tad overrated in the sense that some of the episodes like Gordon Gartrelle, when Denise introduces Martin to the family, etc. are some great episodes. I just think some of them just are not funny.
I enjoyed Different Strokes and Family Matters especially in the first couple of seasons.
Btw, this has nothing to do with the post, but dont you hate slide shows? There so annoying.
waichingliu81 02-14-2013, 03:11 PM i personally would've had the jeffersons at no.1, with the cosby show 4th
TVFactFan 02-14-2013, 09:44 PM This question makes no sense because it's impossible to list 25 black good shows because it wasn't that many made
cleverfun3000 02-15-2013, 12:33 AM This question makes no sense because it's impossible to list 25 black good shows because it wasn't that many made
I thought so, too. but a fellow SO member showed me this link: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_sitcom Believe it or not, there were actually 40 black sitcoms! Who knew?

I can see 10 but not 25

There are more than 40. Those are just the longest running black sitcoms. If you go down the page, you can see them by decades.

MacLeaper 02-15-2013, 02:13 PM Very interesting list. I don't know if I would've listed all the same shows because I don't care for some of them. But I have probably seen at least one episode of almost all those shows. (Except for a few I know I have not seen at all and really don't care to.)
I do think "Family Matters" and "Diff'rent Strokes" should have been way higher on the list though. Those are great, long-running shows.
And I agree that it's a shame "Amen" wasn't listed- that is a great '80s show too.
Of course, I'm not sure that I really like the term "black sitcom". I get that it's a short way of saying, "a sitcom with a predominant black African-American cast", but the short phrase "black sitcom" makes it sound like the show is only aimed at black people or that only black people can or should enjoy it. I think a good show that is genuinely funny with good morals can appeal to all races.
I also kinda question calling shows like "Diff'rent Strokes" and "Webster" "black sitcoms" in that sense, since the former only had 2 black stars with 3 other white main characters (and I realize that was obviously part of the premise) and the latter only had one main black star. (Though his Ben Vereen also showed up as his grandfather so that helps.) But I suppose in Webster's case, Emmanuel Lewis was the main star. (Much to his costars' dismay, but that's another story.) So I guess, according to the Wikipedia page, the criteria are either a primarily black cast or at least a black actor in the lead role. So I guess that's why "Webster" and "Diff'rent Strokes" can qualify.
But by that same token, I guess "Good Luck, Charlie" would not qualify just because white Teddy's best friend happens to be black. And Ivy and her parents both show up fairly often on the show. (Ivy more so than her parents though.) And they also have a mutual friend, Emmett, who is also black.
Anyway, I think if I were picking some of my favorite sitcoms with a largely African-American cast and/or a black actor or actress in the lead role, I would probably go with...... (in no particular order necessarily)
The Cosby Show (definitely one of the best sitcoms, period- of the 1980s or any other time period. I just think it's really funny and that Bill Cosby does a great job of parenting on this show.)
Family Matters (again- one of the best sitcoms, period. And its parent show, Perfect Strangers is great too, of course- but that one doesn't fit in the demographics of this topic. But I love the loving relationship with the Winslow family and Steve Urkel. They truly show us how to "love thy neighbor" on this show.:) )
The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air (I think this show is pretty funny. I wish there weren't so many curse words that fly on this show and some of the situations the characters get into are not the best- but I could say the same of other shows too. As far as I can recall, I think Will and Carlton talk a big game about sex at times, but I think both remain virgins while single and that's good.)
Sanford and Son (It's just a classic comedy with a great theme song. How could you not like it, you big dummy? )
The Jeffersons (definitely one of my all time favorites- love the theme song too. I would daresay I like this show better than its parent show, "All in the Family". Of course, George Jefferson can sometimes be just as racist against whites as Archie Bunker could be against blacks. But I think this show is also noteworthy for having one of the first, if not the first, interracial married couples on TV. I thought that was pretty neat. Tom and Helen were always fun to watch. And Mr. Bentley is hilarious along with Ralph the doorman. But I always loved the loving relationship between George and Louise. It's so cool that those characters showed up on other shows, like "The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air".)
227 (I used to watch this a lot as a kid. Maybe it was that it was nice to see Marla Gibbs (fresh off of "The Jeffersons" playing Florence) on the show. And Alaina Reed did a great job too- and of course, I knew her as Olivia from "Sesame Street". (Which is by far one of the best interacially mixed shows ever.) And the grandmother and Calvin were always funny too.)
Amen (I don't remember a ton on this show, but Deacon Frye was always pretty hilarious. I used to watch this some too. It'd be nice to see it make it to DVD someday.)
Good Times (I find this to be a funny show too. Gotta love JJ's "Dy-no-mite!" catch phrase. And I always though Michael was a good voice of reason on the show- I like his character. And it was a good portrayal of a hard-working family who lived in tough conditions but always had a strong love for each other and a strong optimism that they would indeed enjoy many good times.)
A Different World (I used to watch this when it originally aired too and I thought it was great. Dwayne Wayne is hilarious. And he was always cool with those flip-top glasses. I enjoyed "The Cosby Show" connection when it first started, but it grew past that and continued to enjoy success after Denise left the college. And Sanford was on here and I have long enjoyed his work in movies and generally one of the cleanest comedians around.)
Benson (I've only seen a little bit of this but I would say it's pretty good from what I've seen. Robert Guillame is a great actor and he does well in this role. Plus, Odo from "Star Trek: Deep Space Nine" is on the show! [Rene Auberjonis].)
Diff'rent Strokes (I love this series! It's fun watching the antics of Willis and Arnold and Kimberly there with Mr. Drummond and Mrs. Garrett in their apartment in NY. And it definitely dealt with some very serious issues as well. And the guy who played Dudley, Shavar Ross, guest starred as MacGyver's "kid brother" Reggie in the Pilot episode of "MacGyver".:) )
Webster (I actually grew up watching this series before I ever saw "Diff'rent Strokes". And both are similar in storyline but I love them both anyway. Webster had the coolest dumbwaiter system ever! It was a great, fun show.)
Sister, Sister (I watched this a good bit when it used to air and I enjoy this one too. Tim Reid did a great job on there, along with Jackee Harry. And of course, the Mowry twins- Tia and Tamera. They are Christians too and I respect them because of their stance for Christ. It was also neat seeing stars from older shows that I like on there- Tim Reid from both "WKRP in Cincinnati" and "Simon & Simon" and Jackee Harry from "227".)
Everybody Hates Chris (This show has some foul language and other such things that I wish weren't there- but I must admit that it is generally pretty funny and I also like seeing the 1980s references, since that's when it's set. It's a pretty good show overall and Tyler James Williams did a great job with this show. I've seen his work recently in a Disney TV-movie called "Let It Shine" and I highly recommend that one- one of the best Disney TV-movies in a long while. [Along with the recent "Radio Rebel" and Lemonade Mouth"- all three are great.])
The Parent 'Hood (I don't remember this show a lot, but I did used to watch it when it aired and I did like it pretty well. Robert Townsend did a good job with it- it seems he generally plays likeable characters.)
Cosby (Another '90s show that I remember watching when it aired. It was a nice show. And having Bill Cosby and Phylicia Rashad back on there as husband and wife made it feel like "The Cosby Show: The Retirement Years"- and that was great with me.)
Roc (I used to watch this when it first aired and I think I mainly remember it because it's about the only show I can think of where the lead character worked as a garbageman. Though I guess Ed Norton was a sewer worker on "The Honeymooners" so that's kinda close. I always thought Joey was pretty funny and Roc was a great character of high integrity. Good show.)
Smart Guy (I don't remember much on this one either, but I did watch it some when it originally aired. If I remember correctly, Omar Gooding was on it alongside Tahj Mowry- and I liked both of them from previous shows they had done- Omar Gooding on "Hangin' with Mr. Cooper" and Tahj Mowry in his role as Teddy, a friend of Michelle's on "Full House".)
Hangin' with Mr. Cooper (This is a great '90s sitcom. I love basketball anyway, so it was fun to see a show about a former Golden State Warriors player who was now coaching basketball at a high school. Mark Curry was funny and generally seemed to be a pretty nice guy [who also keeps it pretty clean from what I understand] and I like that. It's also nice seeing him back with Scott Baio ["Happy Days", "Joanie Loves Chachi" and "Charles in Charge"] on Nickelodeon's "See Dad Run".)
What's Happening (I've only seen bits of this but it definitely looks like one I'd enjoy if I watched it more. This is a classic '70s sitcom anyway, so I'd throw it in here for sure.)
What's Happening Now (Well, this is the continuation of the previous show, so yeah- same deal.)
Gimme A Break! (Nell Carter was really the main black character on the show, but since the show pretty much revolved around her character [particularly after the actor who portrayed the father, Dolph Sweet, died.] So I think it's safe to include this show in the list. And this is another of my favorite '80s sitcoms- I grew up watching this show.)
Malcolm & Eddie (I remember watching this some- I'd throw this in here too. Malcolm Jamal-Warner did a great job with it.)
City Guys (one of the TNBC shows on Saturday mornings in the '90s. This was one of my favorites as a kid. It falls into the mold of similar shows like "Hang Time", "California Dreams" and "Saved By the Bell"- all of which, I like too. Does SBTB count for this list then? Lisa Turtle was one of the main characters after all. I could say the same of the other shows I listed too, for that matter. Or I guess it's not the same as having the lead character being black, like with the case of Nell Carter's character on "Gimme A Break!")
Frank's Place (I seem to have some recollections of this show- starring Tim Reid. He's been on a lot of things- probably because he's such a great actor.)
Snoops (Yet another Tim Reid show- and one of my favorites as a kid. I don't know if it really counts as a sitcom- it was sort of in the comedic mystery action show vein that "Psych" is in. Which by the way, if having Gus as a lead character who's black makes that show count, "Psych" is definitely on this list for me too. This is the 1980s show I'm talking about by the way- and not the later "Snoops" show.)
True Colors (I used to watch this when it first aired- it was an interesting show with a blended family interracially- with a white mother and black father and two teenage black sons and a white daughter. [The kids are from previous marriages.] It was pretty funny.)
Me and the Boys (I enjoyed this show as a kid. There are still some funny moments from a particular episode that I can still recall today. It starred Steve Harvey and "The Steve Harvey Show" almost felt like a continuation of the series. Maybe it was just the familiarity of seeing him back on another sitcom. In any case, I'd include that show in the list too.)
The Hughleys (I liked this some when it was first on. It was a pretty good show with D.L. Hughley on there.)
The Famous Jett Jackson (I remember seeing this some on the Disney Channel- it was a pretty fun show.)
Cory in the House (this was a Disney Channel show that was a spin-off from "That's So Raven"- I didn't like the parent series as much though it was pretty good- but I did like this spinoff series pretty well. Kyle Massey did a good job on this show, along with Jason Dolley.)
A.N.T. Farm (I catch this sometimes on the Disney Channel and I like it pretty well- it plays up the goofy father role sometimes a bit too much [not to mention the idiot older brother role] but they both have their own comeuppance at times along with Chyna. And Fletcher and Olive all add to the fun of the show too.)
And if cartoons count, then "Fat Albert and The Cosby Kids" is definitely on the list too. It's a great cartoon with funny situations and good morals. I like it. Hey, hey, hey!!!!:)
MacLeaper 02-15-2013, 02:16 PM And if "Welcome Back, Kotter" counts for the main character of Freddie "Boom Boom" Washington, then that one is definitely on the list too.
GARFIELDKOOL 02-15-2013, 05:21 PM I can't see the list from the computer of where I am. It is blocked. Could someone list the top 25 list please?

*ROGER* 02-16-2013, 06:57 AM Different Strokes and The Jeffersons are not really black shows
That's true. In Diff'rent Strokes, there are plenty of white characters like Mr. Drummond, Kimberly, Adelaide. And in the Jeffersons, there is Tom Willis, Alan Willis, Mr. Bentley, Charlie the bartender. I never considered Diff'rent Strokes a black show. And as for the Jeffersons, I considered that more of a mixed cast.
GARFIELDKOOL 02-16-2013, 09:28 AM That list is a joke. Not only is some crappy shows are way too high, but some shouldn't be
On the list. Of course, that is someones opinion.
Dr. Thong 02-16-2013, 12:23 PM And if "Welcome Back, Kotter" counts for the main character of Freddie "Boom Boom" Washington, then that one is definitely on the list too.
One black character does not a black sitcom make.

Wow! I think that's the longest post that I've ever seen on these boards. I enjoyed what I read of it, but there are a couple of things that I'd like to point out. Ben Vereen played Webster's uncle, not his grandfather. Also there wasn't anyone named Sanford on A Different World. I'm guessing that you meant Sinbad.
Sterling Holobyte 02-16-2013, 02:34 PM Personally, I definitely think that The Jeffersons should have been #1. The characters in that show were all unique and interesting. And George was hilarious!
Nothing against Bill Cosby, but I think The Cosby Show was over-rated a bit, with bland characters(not all) and sometimes boring situations. I never got that from The Jeffersons.

Both should be #1 and #2 when it comes to black shows
*ROGER* 02-16-2013, 02:52 PM If I had to pick a top 3, it would be:
#1: The Jeffersons
#2: Sanford & Son
#3: What's Happening
factsoflife 02-17-2013, 12:40 AM One black character does not a black sitcom make.
And even if it did, then based on that logic, "The Facts of Life" would be a black sitcom because Tootie was a main character.
And in all honestly, any list that have Fresh Prince higher than A Different World or The Jefferson's is without a doubt flawed.

The main character on Facts Of Life was Molly Parker (Molly Ringwald). The other actresses were jealous of her and had her fired. They fired some of the other actresses as well so that their envy of Molly wouldn't be obvious in the press.

I knew you guys were being tongue-in-cheek and I found it funny.
I think in all honesty FOL was pretty equally divided with each of the four main girls (Nat, Jo, Blair, Tootie) and Mrs. G having equal screentime. I think that especially in the later years it got very even.

It was not even, Mrs. Garrett was the main character
factsoflife 02-17-2013, 08:36 PM It was not even, Mrs. Garrett was the main character
I don't know about that. By the later seasons, Mrs. Garrett wasn't given much airtime and almost never drove the story. By the end Blair and Jo were carrying the heaviest of the storylines.
I will agree that Mrs. Garrett was conceived to be the lead-character, but by the end of the show she wasn't given much to do.
icecream 02-17-2013, 10:42 PM It was not even, Mrs. Garrett was the main characterShe just had top billing from being on Different Strokes. From seasons 2-7 the main characters were divided between her and the 4 girls. She was the mother figure but not the sole star like some other shows have.

tlc38tlc38 02-18-2013, 12:31 AM Where was "AMEN"?????? That was a great show!
I hear you on that one! I love Amen. I wish they'd release it.
By the way, any list that puts The Jamie Foxx Show, The Wayans Bros., and Martin ahead of Family Matters is wacko from the start. I don't like this list and I agree with a majority of people about The Cosby Show being a bit overrated. Yes, it was great show but I think it gets way too much credit.

Cloris Leachman and Ted McKinley were the two most pointless sitcom additions in the 1980's
Buffyboy323 02-19-2013, 12:14 AM Cloris Leachman and Ted McKinley were the two most pointless sitcom additions in the 1980's
Agreed. But I have to disagree with Mrs. Garrett being the main character. She may have been the core character of the show, but I wouldn't say she was THE main character. The four girls usually drove the story for most of the episodes. Mrs. Garrett had 'her' episodes, but I'd say she usually had the secondary storyline.

I think Mrs. Garrett was the main character for the first 5 years. Her last 2 years on the show, she was only on half the episodes. That's probably why they brought in Cloris Leachman. The show was missing something when Mrs. Garrett wasn't on.

Exactly, she was the Mr. Drummond of Facts of Life.

I would say Arnold was the main character.
Yong Fang 02-19-2013, 08:38 AM I have not seen the list yet, but Sanford and Son was by far the best "black sitcom" ever. I saw a couple of episodes recently and it's still hilarious.
Seen the list. Sanford and Son came in 5th, which is decent enough. The Cosby Show more or less deserved to be #1, because it was so mainstream with all audiences. Never cared for any of the shows between 1 and 5.
Another favorite, "Whats Happening!" came in at 22. I and Rerun has the same birthday.
Yong Fang 02-19-2013, 08:40 AM Exactly, she was the Mr. Drummond of Facts of Life.
I would like to add that by the time Cloris Leachman came on board, the show ran out of gas. The girls were well into their 20's and out of college and there was no good reason for them to be together, and not married and moving on with life.
DJM77 02-19-2013, 06:40 PM Sanford and Son was by far the best "black sitcom" ever.
I agree.

Yep, the main character was definitely Philip Drummond. Then there's Kimberly who is also a major character. I would say Kimberly was just as much as a main character as Arnold or Willis.

The Cleveland Show... You got to be kidding me!!? Seriously? It does not belong on their either!!! It shouldn't even be on any types of list that has to do with Black shows including Best Black shows! It not even close to being the best and also it an animated show. I also agree with Sol also about Kenan and Kel. The The Cleveland Show and Kenan and Kel do not belong on the same list as Jeffersons, Fresh Prince and Sanford and Son.

Kimberly wasn't in storylines, but I didn't mind her in scenes. Just remember, the show didn't revolve around her. When she did have a storyline, she was ok. Sam and Maggie were just way out of place. Couldnt tolerate either.

Kimberly Drummond was such a "goody two shoes" in the whole series. Also, as time wore on, she was almost a third wheel. Gary Coleman was the comic and Todd Bridges and Conrad Bain were the straight men. She sort of got pushed off to one side.
ThomasE 02-21-2013, 02:17 PM The Cosby Show should be at number one on the list. I am glad that Homeboys In Outer Space did not make it. Amen should be on that list though. Who made up this list, anyway?

How would they have stretched it out storywise, though? I would have liked to have seen more but it would have been interesting to see how it worked.
Now, TV ONE needs to revive that show. When it aired on BET duing 89-90 and 92-93, I taped every episode but recorded over three of them but found p25 per cent of ep four. (sighs) I would love to have eps 12 and 13 again in their entire ties.

Cool. I want those shows. As a 12 year old, I think I had good taste when I taped those. LOL. When I traded some of my BET recorded master tapes, I am finding that they are being copied in circulation and when I checked youtube and found a clip from ep two, I discovered that it was one of my actual episodes based on how the commercials specifically aired and the quality of the tape/picture.

MrCleveland 02-22-2013, 10:39 AM I can't believe "Gimmie a Break" wasn't mentioned...it had Nell Carter playing a surrogate mother and she was the only one to remain as the original character on the show. And it dealt with some racial issues to...especially "Baby of the Family" where Samantha (Lara Jill Miller) who couldn't go camping decides to shock Nell by putting Joey in blackface. Samantha didn't only shock Nell, but her congregation at her own church by putting-down the African-American people by ploying Joey to perform in the stereotypical blackface.

I remember watching that when I was seven. I didn't quite understand it but it unsettled me.
TVFactFan 02-22-2013, 07:49 PM Gimme a Break is not really a black show. It's in the category with these shows
Benson
Different Strokes
Jeffersons

Yeah, Gimme A Break had ONE black character that was forefront. I don't know how anyone could consider that a black show. Nell was sorta like the female Benson.

I can't believe I didn't notice the absence of Gimme A Break on the list.
I have a theory as to why it may have been left-off. Perhaps some people disliked the show because they felt that having Nell play a maid was a step backwards in the way black characters were portrayed? I'm just taking a guess here.

It wasn't on the list because it's not a black show:crazy:

CPO SharkeyWhy wouldn't The Jeffersons be a black show? I know there's an interracial marriage but I thought most of the cast was still black.

Because 4 white people were part of the cast

The Jeffersons is a black show as it had a predominantly a black cast.

Another noticeable episode was when Addie Wilson (Thelma Hopkins) would be a mainstay character on "Gimmie a Break" and she taught night school. Nell and Addie seem to fight, but would remain friends.
But if there ever was a modern-day "Amos and Andy"...it would be anything with Tyler Perry.
Blackout 02-24-2013, 06:08 PM The Jeffersons is a classic and should not be on the same list as some silly a$$ Keenan and Kel
you must have never watched Kenan and Kel
I mean for crying out loud the dad is the hero from Dawn of the Dead! HE KILLED ZOMBIES!
Blackout 02-24-2013, 06:09 PM The Cleveland Show...
Cleveland Show is amazing
quit hating bro

To me, Kenan and Kel is ok if nothing else is on or if you want to watch it with kids. But I did find the movie "Good Burger" pretty good and I own the DVD. lol
I guess Soloman can berate me too for that.
