But my personal choice for best sitcom of the 90's would be Frasier. nerdstein 02-07-2013, 06:33 PM I honestly don't think I ever seen an entire episode of Friends. However, I have seen bits and pieces of it throughout the years to conclude that is more or less the equivalent of a 'romcom' only in a sitcom format. I don't know of one guy who actually watched Friends (though it may be a guilty pleasure for a lot of them) but the vast majority of the women I know of my generation love it. Since I don't like soap operas or romantic comedies - and considering Seinfeld is one of my favorite sitcoms of all time - Seinfeld by a landslide. Mr. Television 02-07-2013, 06:49 PM These were NBC's 2 biggest shows of the 90s. I think Seinfeld is better, the only good part of Friends was the theme song. I agree. I loved the theme song of Friends but that's the only thing I liked about it. Seinfeld was much better. yankeesrj12 02-07-2013, 08:11 PM Easily Friends. I've seen every episode of Friends numerous times and they never get old. On the other hand, Seinfeld is just not funny. *ROGER* 02-07-2013, 08:28 PM I never thought Friends was too funny. And every character seemed to whine and complain all the time. TVFactFan 02-07-2013, 11:18 PM Two different shows Friends is geared toward woman Seinfeld is geared toward men catlover79 02-08-2013, 03:35 AM Seinfeld, hands down!! comedyfreak 02-08-2013, 05:23 AM Friends-Never got into Seinfeld even the reruns. yankeesrj12 02-08-2013, 02:08 PM Two different shows Friends is geared toward woman Seinfeld is geared toward men Completely disagree. In my opinion it is younger viewers who enjoy Friends, and older viewers who enjoy Seinfeld. All of my friends (and some of their friends) think Friends is a funny show. All of us hate Seinfeld and don't think its funny. My parents, however, enjoyed Seinfeld on NBC and love watching reruns on TBS, but don't care for Friends all that much. Something with the way the shows were developed and how the characters interacted split the two groups by generations. Of course this could just be a small sample from my region, but I don't think it has anything to do with gender. It would be cool to see peoples responses with their age. bookandfilmnut 02-08-2013, 02:23 PM Completely disagree. I think you have a good point. I was 27 when Friends started in 1994 (just turned 46 recently) - and am about the same age as most of the actors and actresses in the show, give or take a year or two. To me, the show really seemed to capture the Zeitgeist of the 1990's for people in their late 20's moving into their early 30's. And I thought that the characters were all likeable, although I agree they could be a little whiny, but they reminded me of real folks I knew and hung around with in those days. And of course, being a young male, I enjoyed seeing Jennifer Anniston and Courtney Cox (Actually, I still do, they are both still very attractive to me well into their 40's). Seinfeld did seem to appeal to the folks in my office who were 5-10 years older than me at that time. Plus, to me, Seinfeld's characters were not particularly likeable - although that in istelf was the basic source of the comedy in that show. nerdstein 02-08-2013, 02:30 PM Completely disagree. You don't think Friends appealed more to women? I live in the Northeast, and I can assure you most of the guys from my generation prefer Seinfeld over Friends. whereas, a lot of the women (of all age groups) loathe Seinfeld. I am sure there are pockets in this country where men prefer Friends, and even larger areas where they hate both. However, if you were to take a survey of the the fans of each show, I am fairly certain that the gender gap would be a lot more pronounced than the age gap. I even think sitcoms like Frasier and the Big Bang Theory appeal more to women. AB 02-08-2013, 07:36 PM I liked Friends a little better than Seinfeld. Both were very funny and both had great casts. Friends always made me laugh more and they had so many great guest stars on the show like Tom Selleck, Bruce Willis, Charlie Sheen, Helen Hunt, Denise Richards, to just name a few. ComedyGuy 02-08-2013, 08:59 PM Seinfeld without question and I had/have a crush on Elaine TVFactFan 02-08-2013, 09:21 PM To me it seemed like Friends featured the female characters more Seinfeld featured the men characters more yankeesrj12 02-09-2013, 02:38 AM You don't think Friends appealed more to women? It is a fact that most shows on television have greater female audiences than male audiences. In my experience, however, it has been pretty much even. Regarding The Big Bang Theory, however, I don't know. I think the audience is about half and half. yankeesrj12 02-09-2013, 02:40 AM To me it seemed like Friends featured the female characters more Seinfeld featured the men characters more Friends featured Ross and Rachel more than other characters (or at least it seemed). But there were a lot of scenes with just Chandler and Joey. Given the cast was split evenly, I'm sure it equaled out. As for Seinfeld, the comparison isn't able to be done. Of course the male characters outnumbered the female scenes, the main cast was a 3:1 ratio. If Elaine was to have most of the scenes, the show would be called Elaine, not Seinfeld. nerdstein 02-09-2013, 01:54 PM Regarding The Big Bang Theory, however, I don't know. I think the audience is about half and half. I would say about 60/40 tilt toward the women. Classicshowsgurl15 02-22-2013, 05:02 PM Well obviously it's going to be each person's opinion who posts on here, but I personally like Friends better. I've seen all the episodes and with Seinfeld, I just couldn't get into it. I didn't think it was as funny maybe because it was a show about nothing and the humor was more dry than on Friends, but yeah I don't like the way that I do Friends. tvfan25 02-27-2013, 04:17 PM I would definitely say "Friends". I really liked the show. It was really like a long soap opera. Most shows have a plot that they can settle in twenty some minutes. Friends kinda continued their stories from week to week. I have all ten seasons on DVD plus the series finale DVD. I never watched Seinfeld. I've only seen the show one time and that was because they were changing my cable and I could only get a couple channels and I had to watch something before I went to sleep! Dude111 12-22-2025, 05:24 AM Seinfeld!! Festivus 04-27-2026, 05:20 AM Friends is a good sitcom, but Seinfeld is the GOAT! Alan Brady's Hair 04-27-2026, 06:25 AM Seinfeld. Friends is basically Seinfeld as tweaked by the network - younger, pretty people, add a couple hot chicks, throw in one of those Sam and Diane storylines so they'll watch every week. Friends is competently done, but not very creative. Bonniegirl 04-27-2026, 06:48 AM Friends !!!!! ThisLittlePiggy 04-27-2026, 06:36 PM Seinfeld icecream 04-27-2026, 06:58 PM I don't hate Friends like I used to. But it is still no match for Seinfeld. Dude111 04-28-2026, 01:08 AM Isnt friends just a bunch of robots playing? :D |
