Ricki Lake Talk Show Yanked after One Season

Bummer for Ricki Lake.

The studio that produced her return to daytime television has announced that "The Ricki Lake Show" will not be renewed for a second year. Original episodes will continue through September.



“While we are proud of the topics the program tackled including childhood obesity, life-after the military, divorce, and addiction we were simply not able to breakthrough the crowded talk show marketplace,” said Stephen Brown, exec VP of programming & development for Twentieth Television, in a statement. Twentieth produced Lake’s syndicated talk show.

Though she’s a veteran talker (she hosted her own show back in the late ’90s), Lake has floundered in daytime where so many new female faces are either hosting a new talk show (hi, Katie Couric!) or bringing in new viewers to a returning one (the women of "The Talk").

Why am I NOT surprised? Her topics took the high road this time and flopped badly. People would rather see topics like "The transvestite next door is my Baby Daddy" or "Kids that bring their parents weapons to school for show and tell" and other low-brow subject matter that get ratings.

Wow, already?

Darn! I'm disappointed for her.

So Katie, Steve Harvey and Trisha Goddard are the only Freshman Shows to be renewed Season 2? Trish came in Fifth place out of the Five new talk shows but she get good enough Ratngs for the CW and Fox Stations she airs on.

Someone on tvbythenumbmers said that the problem was with Ricki was that it was really boring (And not being picked up by as many stations at first like Katie) and the problem with Jeff Probst was that he is not Funny at all.

Katie Couric has warmth and her presence make you feel comfortable and Steve Harvey is funny. That why those two shows have done well. I have not watch Steve Harvey show. but I have watch Katie and I like it. I like the variety that Katie offers and the ride range of topics that are discussed. One day it can be kind of silly/Fun and then the next day it can be something very serious. Every week has a Good mixture of Guests on and it doing well in the Raitngs. I see it improving a lot next year. It's get better every week.

Same here. I love Ricki Lake, and I really wanted to see her succeed. It's been so great seeing her back on TV. Unfortunately, I think she just had too much competition this season.

Wonder if it had something to do with her already having a show in the past?

Maybe it was a "Been there done that" type of situation

Back in the 90's & 2000's, Rick Lake has competed with Oprah Winfrey & Rosie O'Donnell and now, her New Talk Show is alright, but I guess you can say Katie Couric is better as a Talk Show Host than she was on the Evening News

I feel bad for her but I never watched the show much, mostly because I don't have time.

Her show might have been cancelled, but she still won the Daytime Emmy for Outstanding Talk Show Host! Congrats to Ricki!
