In bloopers you can see he got along with Alda and Swit fine. Nobody think had Charles had to be a better character if LL had wanted to play Frank less like a prig it would have happened. Check out Linville being brilliant on Mission: Impossible. He was a sensational actor.

There was atv special maybe 3 or 4 years ago with the cast members remembering their time on the show, and all of them spoke very findly of Larry Linville, he was apparently very well liked by his colleagues.

It seems to be the case that actors who often portray very unpleasant characters always seem to be among the nicest of people in real life.

Linville had a recurring role as a rather nasty police detective in the long running privtae eye show Mannix. I think it was his first Hollywood work.

L.L. just got tired of playing a character who was HATED by EVERYONE... and when 'Margaret' got married.. 'Frank' would have no one on his side.. so L.L felt that he had gone as far as he could with 'Frank'..

He probably made/saved enough with 7 seasons (of course, back then, what they got paid, and what actors can get paid TODAY.. -or even 10 yrs ago-i.e FRIENDS-FINAL SEASON 1 million an episode... and BIG BANG.. top 3 actors supposedly being paid $1 million)

BUT, LL supposedly went on to Broadway (which is VERY forgiving about 'typecasting' unlike TV/MOVIES!) and while L.L. did not know it at the time.. he died at a reality young age of 60.
