Last night on Antenna TV, i saw the flashback episode that recalled Arcchie and Mike's first meeting and to me it's one of the best moments in the show's history, especially with this exchange:

Mike: Let me tell you something, Mr. Bunker.
Archie: Well let me tell you something Mr. Stivic. You are a meathead! A meathead! Dead from the neck up. Meathead!

It was so funny. Even when mike was ranting and Archie was singing God Bless America, even after Mike walked out. Anyone remember this classic moment?

Of course I remember it. What true fan of "All in the Family" could ever forget such a classic, defining scene as that one?

Unforgettable episode for sure. It's funny but the phrase "Dead from the neck up" you've quoted appeared on a little pin-back button I got out of a gumball machine in the 70s. It said something like "Be Dead from the Neck up -- Vote Bunker!" lol :)

I LOVED the end of that episode, as you said when Mike storms out, Archie's singing "God Bless America," and Gloria is crying!! What a classic scene!!

It was the second season and the show was becoming very popular at this point. Edith was getting more dingbatty and the scripts were getting even funnier.

That reminds me of something....Edith's voice wasn't that high-pitched voice that we all came to love and laugh at. I wonder what made them change how she talked - though I'm glad they did because I feel it added to her character.

The comedy level did go up when Jean Stapleton made that change to her voice.

That God Bless America scene, it was a good thing that Rob Reiner had the ability to yell. He had to, the studio audience's uproarious response was probably deafening.

It was funny, BUT when Gloria does that crying it makes me want to kick in the TV screen!

Actually, it's in the flashback episode where she and Mike got married that she does that loud crying. In this one, Archie and Mike's first meeting, she's sort of in the background at the end of the scene crying silently. Which was fine, because that loud wail cry would of ruined the scene. The scene ends with Archie singing the last chorus.
