View Full Version : Wow, a starting salary of $10,000 was not bad in 1978??? LOL
TVFactFan 01-09-2013, 08:16 PM My have the times have changed. Watching the episode where this young girl is excited about starting a job making $9,500 and Maude tells her......"That is a nice starting salary.
In 2013....that's welfare LOL
OH Nuts! 01-10-2013, 08:38 AM According to the CPI, $9,500 in 1979 is the equivalent of $30,100 today.
30K can be a nice starting salary in some areas of the U.S. but in NYC or a suburb of NYC it's really not a lot of $. IMO Maudie was off on this one.

It wasn't too bad in 1999 LOL

True. $30.1K in 1999 is like $41.6K today. Definitely much better - in many areas of the U.S. you could live very nicely on that - in NYC it's still a bit thin with our sky high rents.
Yong Fang 01-11-2013, 01:52 AM There was an episode of Mary Tyler Moore show where it was stated that Ted Baxter made $31,000 a year (around 1972 or so), which shocked Murray (who made less.) $31,000 is about $15 dollars an hour, and Ted was wearing nice, custom made clothes and lived in a nice apartment. But then Mary supposedly made less and also lived in nice housing who wore designer clothing.
There is also a scene in Leave it to Beaver where June was in the house with about ten sacks of groceries complaining to Ward that she spent $20 for all that. This would be more than $10o now, probably closer to $150.
I saw the opening of the film "The Odd Couple" where Felix (Jack Lemmon) decided to kill himself by jumping off a building, went into a fleabag hotel and the rent was $5 (five dollars) a night. This was around 1970.
PrettyinPink55 01-11-2013, 01:59 AM This is one way in which television shows show their age.
I always get a kick out of comparing today's prices versus prices back then, especially on I Love Lucy!!! It puts things in perspective of how much things have really changed!!

I always get a kick when I see the price of something in the background of an old show. Like adult movie tickets for 50 cents from a 1962 ep of The Adventures of Ozzie and Harriet. Or ice cream for 60 cents a quart from an ep of Leave It To Beaver.

When watching episodes of Emergency! from the 1970's, I like to look at the street scenes when they are on their way to a rescue. When they drive past a gas station, the price is somewhere between 30 & 45 cents a gallon. In some of the later episodes, I think the gas price is around 50 cents a gallon.
On a personal note, last year I sold the house I had lived in since the 70's. I sold it for $415,000. I bought the house in 1978 for $47,000. Not a bad return on the investment.
comedyfreak 01-11-2013, 01:46 PM My draw dropped after seeing Alice season 2 where Alice and the girls quit because Mel hired a waiter for extra help and he made more than the girls. Mel paid him $2.60 an hr. He only paid the girls $2.35 hr. this was back in 1976.

On Good times James was excited about $4.25 an hour:lol:

WOW!!! That's a great investment!!! :D :D
I am always amused by what seemed "expensive" back then. Can you even get ANYTHING for less than 99 cents anymore?? Even the stuff at the 99 cents store isn't 99 cents!!
