Just watched the Grand Opening of Over our heads episode. All I can say is wow 80's was in full force that episode. I love this show and grew up in the 80's, I was 12/13 when this episode aired and I'm sure I thought it was oh so cool at the timle. But lord the 80's were not our friend. Lol . I was wondering if anyone knows why the show went in this direction. It seems like Mrs. Garret was out of place. Would she really like this shop?

I don't know why the show chose to ditch Edna's Edibles and move towards the kitschy Over Our Heads outside of the fact that those kitschy novelty junk stores really were a big thing at the time. I was a kid at the time too and I swear between me and my sister we probably owned most of the plastic novelty junk that you could see featured in the store. The 80's were an interesting time, pop culture wise for sure.

I do agree though that it's hard to really think Mrs. G. would have been on board with owning that type of store though, especially since her dream really was more about owning her own catering type business. Or at least that is what we were led to believe a few seasons prior. I suppose that is why they kept the baking angle in that the store sold cookies or whatever. But yes, Mrs. G. always seemed out of place there. Then again, I think Charlotte was ready to be done by then anyway.

Charlotte was definitely out of place. I think I read that one of the reasons they changed from Edna's Edibles to Over Our Heads was because NBC at the time was doing a major overhaul to all of their shows. A lot of shows began a tribute to the 80's era which included several shows changing their opening theme songs to more fast paced rock intros like Facts' 85-86 season theme change, among other things. I think Charlotte probably wanted to leave after the 84-85 season but was probably convinced to do one more season. At the end of the 84-85 season she was in a lot less shows & didn't she even attempt getting married to her high school sweetheart? A storyline that was dropped & forgotten the following season. I know she went away with the man which explained her absence in so many episodes. In interviews I know Charlotte has said she did feel the girls didn't need her anymore as they all were doing more adult things on the show.

Johnny be good!
