I can't remember did they ever say what happened to Mother Jefferson on the show? I'm drawing a blank.

They said she passed away when the actress really died in 1978. But there was no mention of her at all during the entire third season

I think there was a episode referencing she passed away in season 5. Actually they made reference to her in the season 5 christmas episode when George Uncle Buddy came to visit.

It's always really hard when such a principle character on a show dies so suddenly. How do you explain it? Do you write it in or briefly reference it? Very sad because this always makes me think of John Ritter. :( I never watched 8 Simple Rules, but very much wanted to. After John passed, it was just too hard to start watching it knowing of his passing. :( Maybe someday I'll watch it, but only the John episodes. :(

I think referencing is the better way.

Zara Cully did not died suddenly. She was 86 and had been Ill for some time (Since the middle of season 2) when she died in 1978, When you watch the Episodes in season 4 with her you could tell that she look sick and she was barely on the show in the Third and Fourth season. During season 4 she was only in like Four Episodes. John Ritter Died Suddenly and shockingly at the Young age of 54. You can not compare Zara and John. Zara lived a Long life and longer then(at the time and now)the average US Life expectancy. You didn't really expect Zara to be on the show for 11 Years(Of course at that time they did not know how long the show would be on for) at her advanced age.

I agree with Solomon that referencing was the better way to do ity. To tell you the truth I don't always like Funeral episodes.

You have a point there. I understand where you are coming from, and I agree with you.
For what it's worth, I wasn't trying to compare their passing away in that manner. What I meant to say was that it is always difficult to handle on a television show when a main or principle character passes away--expectedly or unexpectedly. Zara Cully's passing away in the middle of the series reminded me of how John Ritter passed away in the middle of 8 Simple Rules and then I kind of went off on a tangent there. Both of these actors played main/principle characters on their respective shows. I was just referencing another instance in which a main/principle character passed away and discussing how different shows deal with this unfortunate situation.

All interesting facts about a fine show. I too liked Zara Cully and her passing made a sad dent. My favorite ep of her is when Tom's Uncle Bertrum gets a real crush on Mother J - and she was nice looking and could tell she was a real dish when she was young.
