by Sadie Gennis

Former Cincinnati Reds player Ryan Freel was found dead in his home on Saturday from an apparent self-inflicted shotgun wound, ESPN reports. The Jacksonville Sheriff's Office is treating his death as a suicide.

Throughout Freel's eight-year career in Major League Baseball, he played for five teams, most notably the Cincinnati Reds from 2003 to 2008. During a single three-year stretch, Freel stole 110 bases.

Freel's career in the majors ended in 2009 when he was hit in the head with a pickoff throw. In June, he was named the St. Joseph Academy's baseball coach but he resigned soon after.

His former Reds teammate Brandon Phillips shared his grief on Twitter: "#RIP to my friend & great teammate #RyanFreel! Really hurt by his passing! You'll never will be forgotten..."

Freel left behind a wife, Christie, and three daughters.
