I was a teenager in the 80's and only got to watch re-runs. I guess I missed the episode that explained WHY Mr. Roper didn't want to perform his husband duties to his wife. It seemed his wife always wanted it and he'd always turn her down. Why? Thanks in advance.

Because most may not be "horny enough" to have sex whenever their wives wanted it. So she always forced sex on stanley which made the activity not that exciting.

ok thanks, but it seems one time she joked that they did not do anything for MONTHS. And Mr. Roper seems to be a pervert because there's a scene where he has binoculars - I just assumed since he was a pervert he'd want to be with his wife. So there was never an episode that addressed this issue specifically?

No not really, I guess it was just the age factor and that sex was needed as much

I think Roper was attracted to the young twentysomething girls that paraded around Santa Monica but wasn't attracted to his wife. He loved her but I don't think he was that attracted to her. lol

He got tired of the same old stuff and wanted something different, or nothing at all. lol

I think it was the classic, dirty old man gag.

You have to commend Stanley's faithfulness -- just as with his vintage car, he wasn't about to "trade her in" for a new model!

We can give him the benefit of the doubt. When a person becomes older, they've tended to settle into habits. I believe he still loved his wife.

He did give in a few times. I always felt sorry for Mrs. Roper.

Maybe he was impotent.....and was embarrassed he couldn't perform when the occasion rose....(pun unintended).

It was probably hard for him to get turned on by a woman who was constantly nagging him.

Three's Company was based on the britcom, Man About The House, and in fact, the first season scripts were almost word by word, the exact same scripts used by Man About The House, and the meme of the impotent older man is a common staple of britcoms of that era. Something to do with WW2, and the Buzz Bombs that terrorized Great Britain.
