It always seems that Gilligan was to blsme for screwing up the rescue but this may not be true
The telephone cable episode - the professor shouldhave secured the cable
The mars camera episode - when Gilligan put the signs behind the camera, why didn't anyone say something to him
The robot episode - why didn't the professor put a note in the robot in case the voice mechanism did not work
Any thoughts?

I'm glad you started this thread. Gilligan didn't screw up every time. Even when he did, it was because he was trying so hard to be helpful, not malicious.
I agree about the telephone cable. Gilligan covered the wires so they wouldn't get damaged. His reasoning was that if the wires got damaged the castaways wouldn't be able to call for help. Then the cable got washed back out to sea and everyone got mad at G because now the wires wouldn't get damaged and the company wouldn't come out to repair the cable and find them.
But the cable got washed away anyway, so even with damaged wires the company would not have found them.
All of Gilligan's ideas have merit. I hate how his good intentions always get turned around and the others gang up on him. As if they all work together effortlessly- Mr. Howell is always trying to get away with doing nothing. watch 'President Gilligan' to see them all behaving like tools, even the Professor.
Again, thanks for starting this thread. It's easy to blame Gilligan but he wasn't always the one at fault and in fact he came up with some pretty good ideas.

The only episode I can recall where Gilligan would be completely absolved from any blame would be the "gold" episode..
And he even noted it on there....
Otherwise he had a botch in every rescue attempt!!

I suppose every sitcom has to have a boob--a weird/stupid/eccentric character to "liven things up."
However, I would call Gilligan the biggest boob in TV history!
A friend of mine joked that maybe the best thing they should have done was kill Gilligan! Then they would have been rescued much sooner!

Let's not forget "Ship Ahoax" Would have been the best rescue by far, and it was Skipper that screwed that one up. Gilligan was ready to start the signal fire and the skipper talked him out of it; saying that Ginger'e predictions about a rescue were fake. They then walk away, back to the hut and we see an Ocean Liner pass close to the island. And BTW. That was the only episode of the original series that we ever saw a ship.

I stand corrected...
Gilligan had no hand in that one..
And he actually saved them from disaster with the glue insisting it wouldn't hold up...
Gilligan was supposed to be a lovable boob that messed everything up so it made sense that that is what happened..
The only one where he was the antagonist and you wanted to see the group destroy him was the jail episode.. He wasn't his typical character in that episode...
Is there any other episode where Gilligan was a jerk?? perhaps the episode with his necklace where he refused to give it up..
I want to say there was an episode where you saw a fleet of ships.. I seem to recall gilligan looking through a telescope and seeing a fleet of ships.. I think it was a b/w one.. Perhaps I am mistaken..
