John Edward is getting quite a bit of tv time lately !!!

Anybody watch his show? If you do what do you think?

I think this show is pure entertainment and this guy really cant
communicate with the dead, but I know many who believe he can.

Whenever I come across the show I cant help but think about that that ep. of Mama's Family with the hairdresser "communicating" with Carl ( Mama's dead husband ) and how the hairdresser got her information ( 2nd hand gossip ).

Wonder if John Edward works like that?

Yeah, it's on LivingTV over here. It's sandwiched between episodes of Jerry Springer in the morning. I take anything aimed at the Jerry Springer crowd with a large dose of salt!

My parents and brother love that show! I've seen it a few times. I don't think it's at all fake. He creeps me out though, the way he can talk to the dead. So I don't watch often.

Not really sure about what to think with this show. Here, it does come on right before Jenny Jones (toned down version with the same basic ideas as Jerry Springer) at 10 in the morning, so Im usually not home, but when I do get a chance to see it, sometimes the stuff is so vague I think I could be a talk to the dead guy too. Sometimes it seems real, but I just cant imagine it being real, theres too many ways that people could find this stuff out, people would seriously do ANYTHING to get on tv (even tell john edwards their life story) By the way, did anyone see the Saturday Night Live skit about this show....i though it was pretty funny.

It seems extremely fake to me. If you take it on surface value I'm sure you could get sucked in pretty easily but I was watching it yesterday and I noticed a few things that were kinda suspicious.
He was communicating for one women who's sister-in-law had gone nuts and killed her husband and their children, before commiting suicide herself. John Edwards was "talking" to the dead siter-in-law and he knew practically everything about the situation. Everyone in the audience was really shocked and amazed and blah-blah-blah but the woman in the audience admitted after the show that the whole murder/suicide was detailed in the national newspapers!!! . John Edward could've easily read about the whole thing before the show. In which case, if I was the one reading the newspapers, I could've been the one "communicating" with the dead sister-in-law!!
Also, John Edward seems to be reaching for things at times in order to find something that fits a particular audience members case. For example he'll say "I'm seeing someone to the side of you - a husband." If the audience member says "no" he'll then try "brother", "brother-in-law", "cousin" etc etc untill he gets something that fits. To me it looks like his entire job is just imaginative guess-work!

You could be right Mossopp.......... I do believe that some people have gifts though. He has a gift but, sometimes it seems he is reaching for something that's not there. I do believe in certain persons having that certain ESP and psychic ability though. I have a gift myself and I don't misuse it. Plus I would not lie to get answers.

Exactly. I'm not convinced about the whole ESP thing myself but I would think that if a person really did have a 'gift' it'd be a tough thing to handle. They definately wouldn't be turning it into a trashy TV show.

I've seen this guy perform a number of times - and that's what he is - a performer, not a psychic. He peppers his audience members with one question after another, taking note of how they react - their body language, nodding of the head, etc. He then takes the information that he's managed to get from them using this prompting technique, and repeats back some general statement about their deceased loved one as if he's in contact with the beyond (one of the oldest tricks in the book). At times he seems to be able to give them pretty detailed information. He most likely has his staff members chatting with these people before air time in order to solicit information that he can amaze everyone with later.

If your viewing this strictly as entertainment, that's all well and good - but Edwards is no more of a psychic than "Miss Cleo".

Actually, he's a medium, Not a psychic. I don't believe he's talking with the deceased directly. That would just be weird! But I think he is getting some form of communication from them, I'm sure. That's why he has to ask so many questions.

It's not to hard to be open to the idea if you just try.

I haven't watched John Edward's show, but if you like, check out skeptic.com and you'll see an article by Michael Shermer about mediums and John Edwards specifically. Shermer makes a case for fraud as he explains the methods Edwards uses. Shermer's summary is this:

"Pretending that the dead are gathering in a television studio in New York to talk twaddle with a former ball room dance instructor is an insult to the intelligence and the humanity of the living."

You are correct - "medium" is the more appropriate term.

Actually, I am open to the idea. I do believe in life after death, and that some people have had the experience of communicating with the deceased. I just not convinced yet in the case of John Edwards.

I just got on the board and reading the above quote just cracked me up.............. I do believe he has a gift but, I don't believe that the dead just come and talk to him one right after the other.
