I was looking up Tainted Love on YouTube the other day and discovered that the original version was recorded by Gloria Jones in 1964. It has that classic Motown sound. I found it pretty interesting :)

I think it's hilarious that some people believe Marilyn Manson did it first.

LOL! You'd either have to be living under a rock or extremely young. I'm 26 and even I know Soft Cell's version.

I knew, but only because there was a segment about the original singer on VH-1 a very, long time ago. It was one of those "where are they now?/remember the 80s" kind of shows. I also remember them saying that Gloria had become friends with the group.

"Tainted Love" has been remade by several artists. I sampled all those that had youtube links at second hand songs (http://www.secondhandsongs.com/performance/71887) and other than Soft Cell's version most of them are mediocre at best except for this one by Scorpions.

Soft Cell remaking that reminds me a little of Always Something There to Remind Me by Naked Eyes. The original, while very good (Bacharach and Hal David -- sung by Dionne Warwick?) becomes sort of obscure over time. But like so many others, I enjoy hearing both.

Dionne recorded it in 1967 but the original was done by Lou Johnson in 1964

Old news. I so knew this years ago.

The Gloria Jones version is way way way way better than the Tainted Love version.

Here are some originals that a lot of people are not aware of

Time Is On My Side by Irma Thomas (way awesome New Orleans soul singer).

Twist & Shout-The Topnotes (an early Phil Spector production), The Isley Brothers didnt do this one first. Then again I know people who think this is a Beatles song.

You Showed Me-The Byrds. It would be a big hit for the Turtles, but the Byrds did this song first as a demo.

Lou Johnson also did the original of "Message To Michael" as "Message to Martha"

I remember when Britney Spears released her version of "I Love Rock and Roll" and how one of the local radio stations was comparing it to Joan Jett's original. They played both back-to-back and asked listeners to call in with their preference. Most liked Joan Jett's better although a few liked Britney's. When it was my turn, I asked if they could play the original and the announcer said we played Joan Jett's original earlier and I said she didn't record it first and he said you wannna bet? I said yeah, The Arrows recorded it in 1975 which was 6 years before Joan Jett. He said I gotta research this and a few minutes later admitted that I was right.

I knew Soft Cell's version was not the original but out of all of them, I still think theirs is the best.

I also found out last year that the late Laura Branigan wasn't the first to record "Self Control." The original, also done in the same year of 1984, was done by an Italian singer named Raf. While Laura's is a rock/pop song, his is slower, all synths and done in the "Italo Disco"/romantic sound that was popular in Europe in the early-mid 80's.

I actually did know this and the original isn't bad at all.

I already knew that, but I realized that Annie Lennox's hit "No more I love yous" was an 80's song and Toni Basil's #1 hit "Mickey" was a cover song called "Kitty"!
