View Full Version : Unacceptable in 2012
McGillicuddy 12-01-2012, 09:44 PM What can you think of that went on in classic sit-coms, that might not be acceptable today?
The Mary Tyler Moore Show - Lou Grant using a drawer of his desk as a liquor cabinet.
I Love Lucy - Ricky putting Lucy over his knee and spanking her!
Regulus 12-01-2012, 10:42 PM There's a S:censored:itload of thins that are done on today's Sitcoms that would not be tolerated as little as 10 years ago.
retrofan05 12-01-2012, 10:52 PM Characters openly smoking. This was particularly prevalent on 50's and 60's shows.
I will always love "I Love Lucy," but the scenes when Ricky spanked Lucy always bothered me. I know it was a different time, but to this day, I just find it awkward and slightly disturbing to watch.
Big3sCompanyFan 12-01-2012, 10:57 PM Basically everything Archie Bunker said!

Remember, though, it was in the script and they were acting.
It was a written script... not even written by Lucy or Desi.

It doesn't matter who wrote it, it aired and it was disturbing either way. I can't even imagine this happening in real life. But then, shows weren't really known for their realism back then.

Oh wow! I definitely didn't pick up on that when I watched it in elementary school!
Coffeecup 12-02-2012, 03:19 PM I still didn't see what the girls threw in. It look like two dog bones.
Steve_uk 12-02-2012, 03:29 PM So many things. Racial jokes, jokes against ethnic minorities, other people's religions and appearance. If anything it's white middle class men who seem to be the butt of the jokes today. A pity some shows have taken to reflect some women's unreasonable behaviour against men in this regard.

Chicken legs.
McGillicuddy 12-02-2012, 04:47 PM Basically everything Archie Bunker said!
On All In The Family, the racist, ignorant, loud mouth, Archie Bunker, was the butt of the joke, not the minority groups of whom he made comments about.
McGillicuddy 12-02-2012, 04:52 PM The Jeffersons - I don't think George would get away with using the word, "honkey", today!
Maude - I don't think the storyline with Maude having an abortion would be acceptable today on a sit-com.

I don't think honky is THAT bad but they said n*gger on The Jeffersons at least 3 or 4 times early on.
Eventhough George said it and was referring to other blacks they wouldn't allow it today.
catlover79 12-02-2012, 06:42 PM This - the now-defunct NBC soap, Santa Barbara, a scene involving a gay character. The scene was aired in 1985 and I'm surprised it got past the censors back then. NO WAY would it ever air these days. Observe:

TVFactFan 12-02-2012, 07:47 PM Tom Willis calling George the N-word
George calling Tom a honeky
Well that was 37 years ago:lol:

Totally!!!
Norman Lear pushed the boundaries for back then, and for today. Probably most of if not all of his sitcoms would be "unacceptable" today.
It's interesting that it works both ways, as in there are things that are on TV today that would not have been allowed on the air back then, and vise versa.
CommonTater 12-02-2012, 08:25 PM The spanking of Lucy never bothered me because it was done in the humor of that time, slapstick type. I am against all forms of abuse but that to me was just done in fun, it wasn't serious.
On the other hand MOST everything on TV today is disturbing to me. EVEN shows on early in the evening are unacceptable for children to watch. Our morals have certainly declined.
jimpickens 12-02-2012, 09:04 PM Allot of sitcoms of the 50s and 60s portrayed hunters and gun owners in a positive way not only did they have characters who hunted and had guns but practiced what they preached in real life now a days that is a no no. Sanford And Son wouldn't have made it on the air today because it would be considered racist after all African Americans portrayed as lower middle class blue collar workers is what you call a stereotype The Andy Griffith Show The Beverly Hillbillies and every rural based sitcom wouldn't set to well with today's urban based PC programming.
TVFactFan 12-02-2012, 09:12 PM CPO Sharkey would not have made it today with how Don Rickles made fun of the way he felt black people walked and talked:lol:
jimpickens 12-03-2012, 02:27 AM Married With Children wouldn't have made it the pilot today I'm still shocked that lasted one season let alone elven.

I don't see anything wrong with that show.
treky 12-03-2012, 02:45 AM probably the portrayals of the japanese soldiers on McHALES NAVY
biffbronson 12-03-2012, 04:39 AM The Mary Tyler Moore Show - Lou Grant using a drawer of his desk as a liquor cabinet.
This was also done similarly on Chico and the Man.
