I gave up and just downloaded them from file sharing sites and youtube, then burned them to discs. I now have all the episodes.

This has been asked many times on the Shout Factory message boards, and the answer is usually the same. Here is a Shout rep's latest response from a week or so ago.

We have no plans for two reasons:
1.) We don't currently have the license to the final seasons. As is often the case, we licensed 2-3 seasons at a time and have released all that we had the rights to.

2.) Sales of previous volumes were too low to be able to put additional money into licensing the final seasons and to produce and market the sets. I'm afraid a tally of the numbers comes to a loss, which is not the way we can afford to release your and our favorite series and stay in business for long. Even ones we absolutely loved, like Facts of Life.

I still hold out hope that one day, someone will release the final seasons.

I'm surprised the sales weren't good... FOL has one on the most devoted and largest fan bases, why would sales be so low?!?

I don't buy Shout's excuses for one minute.

Just my point: how can such a popular Sitcom have low points (after all the show had 3 major films lol) when you get a lot of rubbish sitcoms sold on dvd? Please explain the unfairness of the whole situation?!

It's most likely they knew all the music rights involved for the remainder of the series and they just didn't want to deal with the hassle of clearance, further cutting into any revenue they would make on the show. (low sales, yea, right).

Just because a message board is active doesn't necessarily mean thousands of other people went out and bought the show. I believe Shout's explanation of low sales. "Designing Women" had music issues also yet they completed all 7 seasons because it sold well enough--yet the DW message board here is a graveyard.

Well, Shout! Factory has been to make many bull**** promises they never kept, and lies they told. Here's just some of them:

*In 2009, they promised every single episode of Rhoda S1 would be uncut. Look what happened.

*In 2010, they denied their relationship with Fox had soured. Look what happened.

*In 2012, they promised to look through every single episode of the complete series set of Route 66 to make sure they were all uncut. Again, look what happened.

If I could, I'd photoshop a Pinocchio nose on Brian Ward's face.

I v never heard of DESIGNING WOMEN yet DIFFERENT STROKES + FACTS OF LIFE is well known all over the world (at least DIFFERENT STROKES is, cos o grew up watching it overseas). I also don t understand very much this thing about music: is it because in FOL there is a few episodes of them singing in a band that they can t release the later seasons or what? How much more expensive can it be + those people weren t even professional singers or?
As for sales i d buy all of the seasons if i could & i m sure lots of people would (at least all over America, not sure about Europe cos not everyone in the planet might have heard of FOL)......

Any time a piece of music--however short (it may only be a few bars of a song or a lyric sung)--appears in a TV show being prepped for DVD release, the studio needs to clear that piece of music with the artist/writer and/or their estate and the music publisher. Sometimes the prices for clearance are so astronomical (a million dollars for ONE song) that it prevents any DVD release.

Seasons 6-9 of FACTS featured the girls singing with El Debarge; performing 60s hits with Bobby Rydell and Fabian; singing along with copycat versions of "Dancing Queen" and "You've Lost That Lovin' Feeling" not to mention the musical bits in the Stacey Q episodes. All these factors combined with less-than-stellar sales for Seasons 1-5 must be taken into consideration when bemoaning the fact that FACTS is stalled on DVD.

And I'm sure since most of the artists that the show covered are alive, securing shouldn't be a problem.

How is paying thousands of dollars in music licensing fees not a problem? Especially when Shout Factory have gone on record to say they LOST money on Season 5, so even if Sony let them have Seasons 6-9 I doubt they would be interested.

I bet if they release the DVDs now the sales would be good...Lisa gave the show a lot of publicity on Survivor, don't you think? And for crying out loud, I'm in South Asia, and I'm in love with this show.
