Thanks for posting that Sol. I always wondered about that. I'm probably in the minority but I liked ABP. It was nowhere as good as AITF but it was a decent sitcom. I remember reading about the cancellation in the morning paper and being shocked. I remember O'Connor yelling that he'd never work with CBS again. Of course he later changed his mind when In the Heat of the Night moved there.

Yup I knew it had to be something when a show that had lower ratings was renewed and ABP wasn't renewed and now we know why lol

I'm also in the minority, because I also liked the show.

That is a strange article. For one thing, O'Connor was indeed making more than $100,000 an episode. He was making $250,000 per episode for All in the Family by 1980, so I would have to guess in 1983, he would have to have made close to $300,000 but who knows. (His salary is based on his bio info on IMDB.COM)

I don't get why he was mad at Sally Struthers. Seems it would be the other way around. "Gloria" was actually in the Top 20 when it was canceled after only one season which was odd, but I recall I didn't care for it. I don't think Gloria Bunker was a lead character in a sitcom.

The Opening theme for Gloria was so sad lol

I'd like to see the full series again to get a better judgment about it. I also think by 1983, Carrolll had enough of Archie and lets face it any show gets long in the tooth after a while.

I once saw an actor interviewed, and I am sorry but I don't remember who, but they were talking about how the producers of the series this actor was in insisted the character be spun off into his own series. The actor, very wisely said, the audience does not always buy a character in a different environment relating with new characters. (True, The Ropers, Marla Gibbs in "Checking In".)

The Archie Bunker of All in the Family was quite different than the Archie Bunker of Archie Bunker's Place. The Archie Bunker who interacted with Edith, Mike and Gloria was quite different than the bar-owning Archie Bunker of Archie Bunker's Place. Good, bad or indifferent. APB ran for four seasons, which isn't bad, but let's face it. It was terribly inferior to AITF.

Also, times have changed and Archie has ran his coarse.

If your asking me what show I'd like to see, how about both?

What a crummy couple weeks. First ABP was canceled, then CoC's car was stolen at Denise Miller's wedding!

Sad anniversary... 39 years ago today ABP unexpectedly canceled https://www.washingtonpost.com/archive/lifestyle/1983/05/12/archie-bunker-stifled/24c686e5-aa3d-400e-863c-ffdb8fe5c0cd/

Between Shales politicizing a column about TV and his sanctimonious condemnation of Archie Bunker he failed to properly analyze what actually happened. ABP audience was in decline, there was a significant drop in ratings from year 3 to year 4, and just as alarming the show was following the number 1 show in America losing a large share of that lead in audience. To make matters worse, the audience retained may not have been the most demographically attractive. To paraphrase an old saying from Branch Rickey on a different subject, it's better to cancel a show a year too soon than a year too late. There was a story here, Shales just missed it.

This is why ABP was moved to Monday near the end. Unfortunately CBS never gave it another season to see if that slot would have been successful.

It won its time slot on sundays and mondays vs Chips and Little House on the Priarie so not sure why it was moved

Archie's Bunker's place should have been cancelled after Jean left, it was not the same without her
