JR Ewing... The man we all loved to hate... Has passed away from cancer. He was 81.
I am in shock. A piece of my childhood is gone.
MikeLutton 11-24-2012, 12:21 AM this is soo sad so unfair he was a true legond he wil be missed but what going happen to Jr on new dallas.
Zoneboy 11-24-2012, 12:24 AM what going happen to Jr on new dallas.
Good question, I hope they don't replace him with another actor. Some roles are so iconic that they were only meant for one person and J.R. Ewing is one of them.
jayman75 11-24-2012, 12:27 AM I hate to say it, but I am sure there was some type of plan... Just in case this happened. It's still very early, but it sounds like he had become sick again.
Lets just allow things to shake out... It's just a show. Larry's family is obviously hurting, as are his costars and friends.

Mr. Television 11-24-2012, 01:11 AM I don't know if the show can survive without him.

I doubt it. JR WAS Dallas. No one else could ever play JR - no one would accept a recast.

catlover79 11-24-2012, 02:50 AM Does anyone know if he filmed the episode with special guest stars Ted Shackelford and Joan Van Ark (Gary and Val)?
applecherry 11-24-2012, 10:20 AM Does anyone know if he filmed the episode with special guest stars Ted Shackelford and Joan Van Ark (Gary and Val)?
I hope I'm wrong...But I read Joan Van Ark was to start filming sometime in January. Ted was to start filming before her (maybe in December)..I would have loved to see Val stick it to JR after all these years. Now the writer are going to go back to the drawing board. Now I think the reason Val and Gary returns to Dallas will be the fact that JR has died...To attend his funeral..I think Gary Will hit the bottle/Drink again and when Val learns JR has died...She becomes concerned about Gary..and she fly's to Dallas to be with him durning this difficult time...and of course to see Lucy. I'm worried about the show...not sure if the show will survive without JR...I think the only way the show will survive is if they create a character that is evil as J.R. I can't think of any actor that can play that role....But I'm sure he's out there. All I know is that J.R. cannot be recast...no way no how.
GOD I cannot believe he gone....I knew he was frail, BUT NOT NEAR DEATH..I thought We would see JR for another 4 or 5 seasons. guess i was wrong. God be with his family.:(
McGillicuddy 11-24-2012, 11:04 AM I wonder how many episodes of season 2 have already been completed, and how many Hagman will be in. Is season 2 going to be longer than 12 episodes?

I understand that they have filmed 5 episodes for Season 2 so far. Season 2 is supposed to have 15 episodes.

I wouldn't worry about that. They can't replace JR and they won't.

I think it could although it would be difficult. In the beginning I only watched it because of JR and I know a lot of others watched it for him too, but his role while important, was so small. I know in several episodes he appeared for about 2-3 minutes. Hopefully others have gotten into the new characters and Bobby will still be around. Ratings and writing are the key. They have to do something really creative to make Dallas fans continue to watch.

With Gary and Val Ewing (from Knots Landing) coming along in January, that should help alot! They need to bring back more characters from the original Dallas.

I'm kind of slow. So far I still have 4 more episodes of the first season to watch. lol The only new character I really like is John Ross and even though JR isn't on it very much ,the whole show has centered on what's he's done. Maybe if they did what they did when Jock died, it could work. They need to bring back James and his other son and maybe they can add to the conflict. I'd like to see more Ray and Lucy too.

Thanks for the insight! I think we'll see a lot of cast members from the old show come back for JR's funeral. Does anyone think that THIS might bring back Victoria Principal...even for a one-shot deal?

I really doubt it. Maybe if they just did a tribute to Larry, she'd appear. The only Dallas reunion she ever did was just a cast get together.

Isn't Cliff Barnes a shady character?
catlover79 11-25-2012, 05:14 PM Isn't Cliff Barnes a shady character?
The embittered Cliff Barnes!! He was shady, but he had nothing on JR.
McGillicuddy 11-25-2012, 05:46 PM The embittered Cliff Barnes!! He was shady, but he had nothing on JR.
I guess he wouldn't make a good "fill-the-void" villan. Well, I think its a given they would never have another actor play J.R., but they probably will have to find a long lost relative that can be evil like JR.

JR and Cliff were always rivals/enemies, but JR always got the upper hand over him. Plus, from the beginning of the series revival, they've been grooming John Ross as the villain - a chip off the old block. Still, I guess we'll just have to wait and see what happens!!
Mr. Television 11-25-2012, 07:19 PM If they were smart they'd bring back William Smithers as Jeremy Wendell. He's the only one on Dallas who was JR's equal and he had no good qualities. The last time he was on the Ewings sent him to Jail. That would be my pick.
Retro4Life 11-25-2012, 08:12 PM ^ Good call, Sonny. Wendell WAS one of the few non-JR villains to ever project any real sense of menace. I'd list that among the show's liabilities; they relied too much on JR as a villain and kind of painted themselves into a corner. i.e. you KNEW they weren't going to get rid of him so he would always wriggle out of whatever evil deed he'd done, and you couldn't turn him too "good" because you'd lose his real appeal (and muddy his established character).
As to Cliff Barnes, no he was never the villain JR was in any sense. One, he wasn't as unscrupulous, and two, he wasn't as successful. One of the great tragedies of the later seasons of Dallas was how Cliff, originally the crusading, but very conflicted and occasionally ruthless opponent of JR was turned into a babbling clown who never, never won and ended up being JR's kicking boy. So no, I don't think he'd work as a big bad guy here.
Wendell has promise but I do think at age 85 (Smithers' age) it's hard to pull off truly villainous, given his increasing frailty. Maybe a son or grandson could step up...with Smithers in the background?

Yea you're right. His age would be a drawback. It's hard to believe that most of the adult cast from Dallas are in their 70's and 80's now. I think the show did make a mistake writing him out because the show needed a villian like that in the later years. I like George Kennedy but Carter McKay was not a good of enough character to go against JR.

Kennedy was always a menacing figure. You're right, they could have easily utilized him more, unfortunately I'd guess one of the reasons they didn't was because he was an "outsider" and they wanted to focus on inner conflict with the family. Had they kept Jack and made him a bad guy, that might have made more sense.
How about Punk Anderson? He always seemed like he might have been able to give Jock a run for his money. Then again, he was an "outsider", too. They would have had to have made some connection to the Ewing family to make it workable, I guess.
Orrrr...you could have had Abby come over from Knots Landing when she left that show. Her and J.R. would have made great rivals, maybe with a strong Cliff Barnes in the middle!
applecherry 11-27-2012, 01:42 PM Isn't Cliff Barnes a shady character?
Not shady or evil enough....cliff will not do.
applecherry 11-27-2012, 02:16 PM Not shady or evil enough....cliff will not do.
Abby's not a bad choice....i thought about Gregg Sumner...but changed my mind....he was always a nice guy. I'm still trying to think up a villain .

I guess that's the other question---Is John-Ross ready to fill J.R.'s shoes? It seems most of us, here, think he still needs an elder villain to back him up!

Oh, I agree with that. Wasn't James Beamont kind of a sleazy, scheming guy? Maybe they should bring him back.

Refresh my memory here, Monika. I should probably remember him.
I remember Naldo Marquetta, who menaced Jenna for a while...but he seemed too wimpy to really pose a threat to anyone.

I think he should be brought back but he wasn't really all that sleazy. He kind of started out that way but by the time he left, he was a family man who just wanted to be left alone. He got tired of JR at one point and helped get him put in a sanatarium. lol John Ross got pretty jealous of him by the end of the show so that could add conflict.

James was JR's other son. He was played by Sasha Mitchell who also starred with Patrick Duffy on Step by Step.

Ooook, gotcha. I always thought Mitchell was John Ross, shows how I faded off there for a while.

It's hard to keep track. JR had 3 sons. James was born before he met Sue Ellen. He showed up during the last 2 seasons. Omri Katz played John Ross through most of the series. JR had another son with Cally during the last season. She moved out of town and we never did learn the baby's name. JR didn't even meet that son. He just let her leave something that the younger JR never would do.
catlover79 11-27-2012, 09:30 PM Omri Katz did reprise John Ross in the first reunion movie, which aired in 1996. Has he acted in anything else since?

According to Wikipedia he only has starred in 2 short films in 2002 and 2006. It sounds like he doesn't act much anymore.

Hmmmm...thanks. I wonder if he was even approached by the TNT people to reprise John Ross in this revival.
