We talk a lot about the cases we personally want solved or that have been solved. Are there any you don't want solved?

Here's my list:
DB Cooper-No one was killed so I sort of like this one remaining a folk hero

The Loretto staircase-The truth can't be nearly as cool as the legend

The mysterious benefactor-Anonymous acts of kindness are the purest form of altruism. Finding out who did it would ruin part of the beauty.

All the yeti/Nessie/etc cases

I never want to figure out where the mystery hum came from. Let those nut jobs suffer.

ROFL,ain't that the truth???!! that one guy's head was shaped so weird,I kept thinking "geez, maybe it's the way your head is shaped!!!"
And I never could figure out why he kept driving around all night to try and find this mystery 'hum'.So even if he found it,what good would it do? If it was that loud,he couldn't very well tell the place doing it to 'knock it off!' LOL.

I always thought they were just new age hippies with tinnitus.

All three of those people smoked a lil too much herb in the 60's.

The aligash abductions. I say that tongue and cheek but if it is proven to be true I don't think I will ever feel comfortable visiting Maine again. I've been there once and it is a wonderful place.

yea, that! I felt UM may have very well edited out the part where the Dr. likely told the guy he had tinnitus. These sounds are not all that unusual for ppl suffering from it to hear.It can be anything from ringing in the ears to a loud roaring sound, just like these ppl are describing.
I was also wondering why they just didn't put a pair of sound-proof headphones on him,or send him into a sound-proof booth. If he still heard the hum there, then well...mystery solved.Guess that one was just too easy and would have knocked the mystery part out of it for UM.

Is the Loretto Staircase open to the Public? I'm not sure I'd feel 100% safe standing on a Spiral Staircase that was built without nails!

I don't know why you all are being so mean about the hum "hearers", especially since alot of people on each continent have heard a similar sound (so they can't all be imagining the same thing, and the hippy movement was predominately an American thing). Extremely low frequency (ELF) and military activity have thought to been the causes. The one Hal guy was near an ELF station when it shut down in 2004 and he said his head felt lighter and his ears popped when it went down.

Here is a little more information about "The Hum", which is actually many hums, and what could be causing them: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Hum

My intent wasn't to be mean,I just think UM played this one up a bit.I would have liked to have heard what the Dr. had to say,but instead all we heard was how he was sure it wasn't coming from his body. The truth is,it very well could have been,if he had tinnitus.

The chapel is open, although no longer consecrated. You cannot stand on the stairs. However, I have been to a building that had wooden staircase built without nails, and they've survived 100+ years of female students (it's in an old mansion that became a school.) There are a number of ways this can be done. Dowels, dovetails, etc. They're safe.

Might have been just as likely than not that the church explosion in Beatrice, NE occurred without a single person being there when they were supposed to be by schedule, but I've always liked the story regardless.

I liked the magic rock, too. Yeah, it's kind of a goofy segment, but those folks were happy and that was nice to see.

I second the mysterious benefactor. Good people, good story.

I thought the staircase was made with wooden nails? perhaps i'm recalling incorrectly though.
I did think it was a shame the sisters were insisting it had to have been made from someone heavenly, other than accepting the fact that was unlikely to be the case. That isn't scriptural at all. (i.e.-Jesus didn't return to earth to build a staircase; He doesn't come back until the Second Coming).Neither would it be scriptural for it to be anyone else from heaven, either.(the dead haven't been raised yet).
I just thought they should have considered that they prayed the prayers, and God answered them by sending the right EARTHLY human to build it for them. And the guy who had the drawing (his father,I think it was said) may have very likely been that person. But they weren't even willing to consider it.
UGH!

"Wooden" nails would likely actually be dowels and/or biscuits. Wikipedia lists dowels being used, which is consistent with the all wood no nail staircase I am familiar with. The New Yankee Workshop guy often uses no nail techniques.

No problem. 4 years of "Don't step on the staircase!!!" and 4 years of sneaking up it sort of stuck with me. :)

Now that we know what we know now, I may have said the Baskin kids may have been better to never get solved. How much more hurt do the parents have to go through? They had hope their kids were alive and well at one time, then they are found and want nothing to do with their parents thanks to an amazing lobotomy from Grandpa.

Stuff like Keith Warren might be an example of a case the family may be better off not knowing. What if he killed himself and a note is found after all these years? Isn't it better knowing your family member climbed a mountain, got attacked by a mountain lion and died that way then just not wanting to be around you anymore?

I don't know about that. I would think the parents would have some comfort knowing their children were alive and well. It's sort of like the real mother in the story of King Solomon and the baby. She loved her children enough to let them go to ensure their safety/happiness. If I were a parent, I think I'd want to know they were safe and happy, rather than endlessly wondering.

I also kind of hope DB Cooper never gets solved. It's such a weird-yet-slightly-cool story, and I don't want to turn on the news one night and find out DB was some overweight shoe salesman from Boise who acted out some midlife crisis, lol.

I prefer to imagine "Dan Cooper" sitting on some Costa Rican beach, occasionally perusing these boards as he sips a mai tai

I also have to agree with the D.B Cooper one. I am sure D.B. Cooper wasn't his real name, but as it was said. He didn't hurt anyone and he's sort of become a legend to some. Plus D.B. Cooper will always be a scar on the FBIs reputation. There is a saying. "You can't win em all"
