View Full Version : What do we think... seasons 6-8 on DVD? Would you buy them?
santaburger 11-13-2012, 12:16 AM So, what does everyone think - will seasons 6-8 ever be released on DVD, or will they stop now that seasons 1-5 have all been released?
And if they DID choose to release the California years, would you buy them??
I have mixed feelings - part of me despises the California years, and would like to pretend they didn't occur. That part of me is more than satisfied that all the Milwaukee seasons somehow managed to find their way to DVD, and is fine if they leave it at that.
But as a pretty big fan of the show, there ARE indeed some Cali episodes I have to say I enjoy. In particular, season 6 has more than a few legitimately good episodes. Sure, they aren't the "classic" L&S we know in love, but ones like To Tell the Truth and Sing, Sing, Sing are ones that I would definitely deliberately watch and ENJOY.
As for season 8, I don't know if I could bring myself to buy it. Now if they put on some of the legit extras that I KNOW Garry & crew has locked up in a vault somewhere (i.e. the original 15 minute pilot, featuring not-Cindy as Shirley...), then we can talk... :0)
If I had to put money on it, I'd guess that seasons 1-5 are all we'd get. But then again, after the huge hiatus after releasing season 4, I was convinced that was all we'd get, and I was proven wrong there...

What I never liked about the California years is that it ended any possibilities for crossover eps with the Happy Days gang since they were no longer in Wisconsin.
wayman 12-15-2012, 11:15 PM I would buy all the remaining seasons. The first episode of Season 6 is a Milwaukee episode. Also, Season 7 has the girls and Carmine returning to Milwaukee for their class reunion and Rosie Greenbaum is there as well as Terry Buttafucco.
shotzette 12-16-2012, 01:09 AM I'd buy them. There were a few gems in the later series that I would like to see again.
comedyfreak 12-28-2012, 10:42 AM The 1st season of the California years was the best. I'd probably buy them.

I did enjoy that 1st season in California when watching it in syndication but not the last 2.
Edster2973 02-08-2013, 01:02 PM I want them all... the California years weren't that bad, and some episodes were better than the ones set in Milwaukee ("Duke of Squigman" comes to mind... yuck!). The completist wants them all...
Ed
robyrob 02-08-2013, 01:53 PM i'd get them.
sloowly, when they go on sale.
BigManMike 02-13-2013, 04:49 PM I haven't bought any L&S DVDs yet, but once I do, I would definitely buy them all, including 6-8 if they ever release them, as I believe in completion and I don't believe in skipping episodes. If CBS never releases them, then I will buy bootlegs on ioffer of the last 3 seasons.
MacLeaper 02-13-2013, 05:24 PM I love Laverne & Shirley!!!!!!! I sure hope Seasons 6, 7 and 8 get released on DVD because I want to finish watching the rest of the series! I only recently got into watching the show on DVD, as it didn't air in reruns or anything for me to see it when I was younger (since I didn't have cable for a long time....)
This is such a great series- I love all of it.:)
TVFactFan 02-13-2013, 07:27 PM I wouldn't buy seasons 6 to 8 for the main reason below
"No more crossovers with the Happy Days Cast"
shotzette 02-13-2013, 11:54 PM I'll buy it. I loved the reunions with the Happy Days cast with the glaring exception of "Shotgun Wedding". The episode was over the top and clearly showed that both shows were past their prime.
As much as most of the fans view the move to California as jumping the shark for Laverne & Shirley, they had pretty much exhausted all of the available Milwaukee storylines.

Yeah, I couldn't agree more. The previous poster responded that he/she wouldn't purchase Seasons 6-8 due to no crossovers with Happy Days, but that period of Happy Days people complain that it wasn't up to snuff and was the worst of the show, so what difference does it make? To me, it was the characters and cast of Laverne & Shirley that made the show, not the locale so much, and after a while, how many times can you show the girls resenting the shoddy treatment at Shotz Brewery or them struggling for the rent? Everyone moves on in their lives and gets a new job, not to mention a new place to live, and that's what Laverne & Shirley reflected.
I say bring on Seasons 6-8!

That's because I am a causal fan of the show not a diehard
Edster2973 02-14-2013, 12:32 AM There were no crossovers episodes with happy days from season 6 to 8
The poster wasn't stating that there was. They were merely pointing out that the last crossover that occurred in Season 5 was sub par (at least to him/her) so that when it comes to Seasons 6-8 having NO crossovers, he/she is ok with it.

That's your perogative, Solomon, so no arguments here. I was just relaying why I think the California years have merit, since knocking those years seems to have become a favorite sport of many on this board. I especially like the 2 part episode where the girls try to retrieve a letter from their boss' office which is alarmed to the gills. Lenny and Squiggy were on the lookout as walking plants... lol... pretty funny stuff...

I missed on your posts on the board, I think you been going for a while
Edster2973 02-14-2013, 12:54 AM I missed on your posts on the board, I think you been going for a while
Yeah, I've been lurking for the most part... actually, I've been quite content since a lot of the series that I've been collecting have been finishing up or have finished up, like Designing Women, The Golden Girls, All in the Family, The Mary Tyler Moore Show, Good Times, Friends, Will & Grace, Boy Meets World, 3rd Rock From the Sun, Roseanne, I Love Lucy, The Lucy Show, Here's Lucy, Reba, etc. that I haven't had much time to post, but I still plan to chime in every now and again.
I wish the companies involved would eventually finish off shows like Archie Bunker's Place, Maude, The Jeffersons, The Facts of Life, Happy Days, and, of course, Laverne & Shirley, but time will tell if that ever happens.
One show I wish they would release is Valerie/Valerie's Family/The Hogan Family. Some speculate that star Valerie Harper is holding up the release, but that has been proven false by Edie McClurg. She claims in an interview that it's the producers who are holding out since they don't want Valerie to rake in any dough from the show since her courtcase made her entitled to 15% of whatever profits the show makes in syndication and DVD sales. Time will tell if anything from that show sees release. It'd be a relief to throw out the poor VHS copies I have...
Have a good one my friend. Hope you're doing well!

BINGO! The early sixties were turning into the mid-late sixties and the cast was aging. They did some episodes in 6-7 where the characters had to fact the fact that they were maturing (To Tell the Truth) and those rang true.
I think the writing did suffer some in seasons 7-8, but a lot of that was due to Cindy Williams, Michael McKean, and Betty Garrett leaving and Penny Marshall taking a lot of time off.

http://tvshowsondvd.com/graphics/blackpixel.gif Last April, after being on hiatus (DVD-wise) for four years, Paramount Home Entertainment finally released the fifth season of the show...the last one based in Milwaukee. Now after Shotz Brewery took away their job as bottlecappers, the gals pack up and head west to California while everybody else comes and joins them in Laverne & Shirley - The Complete 6th Season. This DVD set comes to store on May 21st, with 22 episodes including new neighbor Leslie Easterbrook (Police Academy) as "Rhonda Lee." Since they're right there by Hollywood (whose sign is seen in the new opening credits) you'll get a gander at guest stars such as Fred Dryer, Troy Donahue, Frank Ashmore, disc jockey Jim Lange, Keith Coogan, Larry Gelman, Stubby Kaye, Richard Moll, Eric Idle, Mitchell Laurance, Otis Day, and Vicki Lawrence. You'll also get Episodic Promos, a Gag Reel, and a Videogram. Here's a picture of the packaging:

Edster2973 02-19-2013, 06:43 PM YAYYYYY!!!! I am soooooo getting this season! Bring it on!!!!
Ed :)
BigManMike 02-19-2013, 06:51 PM Well, that's great that they're finally picking up on Laverne and Shirley. Hopefully 7 and 8 will be out by 2015 at the latest. But I don't understand why they haven't done any more Happy Days. They really need to get on the ball with that one.

I hope they get to at least Season 6 of Happy Days on DVD which contains the episode "Fonzie's Funeral" which features Laverne, Shirley, Carmine, Lenny, and Squiggy.
shotzette 02-20-2013, 10:28 AM So happy to hear this!!! I can't wait for their release! :-D
tlc38tlc38 02-20-2013, 01:53 PM Preordered my copy of season 6 today! Can't wait!
JMFabiano524 02-21-2013, 06:16 PM I am another who didn't hate all the Cally seasons. In fact, when L&S was in syndication, I'd always look forward to those episodes!!! But yes, the show got sillier and sillier, and people left, until we were left with the dreck of "Laverne...Where's Shirley?" as I used to call it.
One thing that will be kind of sad about the upcoming set is, due to the uber high costs of Beatles songs, as well as this being CBS we're talking about, the montage of the last Milwaukee episode will be changed. I always loved that part with "Yesterday" playing in the background.
Seriously, have they gotten better with music AND classic closing logos on these sets???
Ant-Lox 04-12-2013, 10:17 PM I'll buy them all, I'm new to the show, so I want to see everything. Plus, I love Laverne, so if she's in it, I'm on board.

It's available for pre-order at Amazon, release date 5/21/13. I love the cover art!
gttiene 04-13-2013, 10:56 PM I thought Season 6 was one of the best in the entire series...but 7 & 8 were the worst! I'd buy all of them though to have the complete series on DVD:)
